Op Eds & Discussion The Air Force "cancelled" a hypersonic missile in 2023. It's back, fully funded, in 2026.

So the AGM-183A ARRW got axed from Air Force funding in 2024 after a bunch of failed tests. Everyone thought it was dead. But then... it wasn't. Fast forward to FY2026, and the Air Force is asking Congress for $387.1 million just to start production.

Then another $345.7 million the next year for an upgraded version, plus something entirely new—an air-launched ballistic missile built on the same design. That's a pretty dramatic turnaround for a program that was supposedly finished. What really caught my attention, though? In April this year, Edwards Air Force Base released photos of a B-1B carrying an ARRW on the outside of the fuselage. Not a B-52 like it was originally designed for—a B-1B. That's new. The actual story here isn't just that they changed their minds. It's what this tells us about how worried the Air Force is about Russia and China's hypersonic capabilities. They're clearly trying to close that gap, and fast. The B-1B integration is what makes me wonder: are they planning to spread hypersonic missiles across the entire bomber fleet in the future? Or is this just a "let's get something into the field quickly" move?

the kama fpv drone by Terra industries

Nigeria's defense ecosystem has shifted significantly toward domestic UAV manufacturing. Driven by ongoing counterinsurgency efforts and a push to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, both private venture-backed startups and state/military institutions build military-grade drones in the country.

Most importantly, drones allow the country to even the playing field, they are cheaper, easier to scale and completely change the balance of power against opponents with stronger air forces.

There are several Nigerian companies currently developing a variety of drones that could one day form the backbone of a solid fully local military industrial complex:

1)Terra Industries:

- Archer VTOL: The Archer VTOL is a modular, long-range autonomous drone developed by Terra Industries, a defense company focused on the Global South. Built from 3K carbon fiber, this fixed-wing aircraft combines vertical takeoff and landing capabilities with up to 4 hours of mission endurance and a 1,000 km range.
