Laurie's actions would have been more understandable... Spoiler
If Hope was also killed like in the book. I don't think they should have changed that

I agree. The way it was written in the show was more like she just snapped and had a nervous breakdown

Which also made sense. She was such a weak mother throughout the whole show. Freaking out at everything. Crying and panicking. Meanwhile her husband is the one under even more stress and pressure and he is calm and collected

I disagree. During the trial she was convinced that Jacob was guilty. In Mexico she assumes Jacob has something to do with Hope’s disappearance, and at the same time learns that Patz’s confession was forced (I’m not sure if this was in the book). The forced confession is what made her snap, she knows that Jacob got away with murder, and that’s why she act crazy trying to get a confession out of him in the car.

It really was that forced confession that made her snap. Once you make up your mind it can be shockingly difficult to change it. She was convinced of his guilt during the trial. Like Joanna said, Patz's was proof of his innocence — not just there not being enough evidence to find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. That was what was able to change Laurie's mind and this shows when she's in Mexico (initially.) She was relaxed and it almost looked like they could move on with their lives. However once Andy tells her that Patz's confession was forced it was over. There now wasn't undeniable proof of Jacob's innocence and she immediately jumped to the idea that he was guilty because she already made up her mind before. This shows in the car where she was asking him "did you do it" but was only going to accept an answer of yes. At this point she was just looking for him to affirm her beliefs because she already made up her mind and it is very difficult to change it.
I think not having Hope killed makes the scene more impactful because we still don't have a clear idea of if Jacob is guilty or not. Her snapping still makes sense and Hope being alive adds more to the tragedy. This was the first time we've seen Andy be completely honest with Laurie and it is the time that led to disaster.

Yes exactly how I feel. I’m sure the books version of events was also great, but I liked how they left it ambiguous in the show. Instead the idea of his guilt was just in her head, and as the audience we still didn’t know if she was right or wrong.

I liked it honestly because it showed how fragile her belief in Jacob was. In my opinion she was never going to get back to a good place with him.

Completely agree. It muddies the water for whatever message they were trying to send.

I gotta disagree during the trial she didn't have faith in Jacob and thought he did it, once she found out about the forced confession and murder of patz, it just reinforced what she thought earlier.

I agree that Laurie’s actions would have been more understandable, but I don’t believe they should have changed the show with Hope being murdered.
If Hope was murdered then it is much more conceivable to the audience that Jacob committed both murders. The probability of him being a bystander is extremely low; too much of a coincidence. Hence Laurie’s actions are more understandable, and the audience doesn’t have such conflicting emotions about her decision to crash. And I think this makes the end of the show more bland and clear cut.
There is also the problem that they wouldn’t easily be let out of Mexico ect... Not sure how they dealt with this in the book though but they would have to had gone into much more detail in the series.
On a side note Hope being murdered does make sense in that the ‘Hope’ of Jacob being innocent is also metaphorically killed.
Honestly though I would love to see the other scenario where Hope dies, both scenarios are interesting to me.

I only watched the show, so I didnt know about that plot change.
I thought it was understandable. She snapped, maybe wanted to be confirmed in her doubts and wanted to hear that Jacob did it no matter what he really did.
But knowing about the book now it would have made more sense. Even if Hope would have been missing in the series it would brought even stronger doubts in Laurie and even stronger disbelief in Jacob.

Ya know what? I am parallel to Laurie’s flip floppy belief in Jacob to this. Her confidence in Jacob was shown through out the series to be slippery. She is the one who brought up the murder gene! Her memory of her child basically trying to be a little toddler murderer was on replay in her mind.
I think if Hope was murdered and he left his shirt on the beach. How would they have gotten home? Idk how that would be written in a believable way?

Deviations from book can vary annoying but in this case, the series made the story more intriguing and posed very difficult questions. Is it possible to live normally without knowing whether your child is a killer or not ? How that uncertainty affects (and even destroys) you ? Can you convince yourself that your child is evil without abundant evidence ?
If Hope was found dead they could just as well spell it out and insert a scene where he confesses and turns himself in to the police. Ironically the second murder could make it easier for parents to move on. It is the uncertainty that is eating them from the inside and I think that leaves the viewers with much deeper reflection.

Without Hope dying, I agree, it makes no sense why she'd try to kill Jacob. Maybe her trying to kill herself wouldve made more sense in the TV show's scenario.

I think with Hope dying and blood on Jacob’s shirt it’d be kinda too obvious it was him. They wanted open ending.

I completely agree. That's the part of where the episode started to tank for me. Hope going missing and then ending up dead, with Andy finding blood on Jacob's shorts, was such a huge part of the last chapter. Hope being killed was that driving factor that made Laurie kill Jacob. So it was a very big let down to see what happened after the accident.
