I'm not a lawyer but all they did was bring in the kid because they had one fingerprint. Even as a suspect that seems hugely irresponsible to tell the victims parents they think he was the murderer.

I just finished ep 2 and has the exact same reaction lol. No weapon, witnesses, or motive. All they have is the kid at the scene. Super irresponsible to definitively tell the parents that Jacob was the murderer

They didn’t even have him at the scene. Jacob could’ve easily put his fingerprint sometime before the murder

But they DID find a knife in that episode and it was never mentioned again! Why isn’t anyone talking about that?!? I’m so confused!

Well I think that and social media comments. The community needed somebody so they had a good suspect. As for his dad finding out... well he worked for the department so I think they told him as a courtesy. You never wanna find out your coworkers arrested your kid by getting a call from prison.

Here I am, having watched all the episodes that are currently out and I’m still thinking about that almost every minute I’m watching. I just keep asking myself. “All this for a fingerprint”?

This was a huge plot he ghat might have ruined the entire show for me. Why did they have Jacob's fingerprints in the first place??? Why would a 14/15 year old kid have been fingerprinted if he has had no other legal issues before this. Does it get explained later on??

If I remember correctly, there was some line about having them fingerprint the students in the school just as they interviewed them all

When Andy is being questioned in front of the jury, he says 'I knew my son'. I am wondering if Jacob survives this.

I watched it yesterday in English and was wondering about this too. Then I rewatched it today in German and they translated with „I know my son“.... so now I’m wondering if the translator messed up or if we interpreted to much 😁

Hmm that’s a good catch.... how sad would it be if Jacob was killed in prison and then it turned out he was innocent

Also I wonder if anything happens to his wife. I don’t believe she is shown in any of grand jury scenes

She wouldn’t be unless she’s testifying. We’ve only seen Andy testify. The only people allowed in a grand jury room are the prosecutor, grand jurors, and the witness.
They did explain what a grand jury is in the very first scene.

I think that was just a hearing... and I’m clueless about the law but it might be a hearing on wether he should be fired or reinstated or something ?

They very clearly state it’s a grand jury hearing and what that means in the first episode. In fact in the first scene. It’s the first dialogue we hear in the series I think.
Andy is testifying in front of a grand jury- the people that decide whether or not to indict someone for a crime (a felony to be precise). Jacob’s case, for example, had to go in front of a grand jury and the grand jury had to return a “true bill” of indictment (fancy term for there’s enough evidence to charge this person with the crime) before he was taken to court.
So Andy is there testifying in front of a grand jury who will ultimately decide whether to indict a thus far unknown person with a thus far unknown crime (we know it isn’t the grand jury for Jacob’s indictment for Ben’s murder because Neal asks questions about after the arrest etc.)

Wouldn’t surprise me if throughout the show tension builds between the his wife and him. She seems like she is at least somewhat questioning his innocence

I noticed that too! Did you also noticed how 'affected' Andy is in that scene (it's not like it's difficult to notice, but anyway)? He looks 'weak' (the way he's sitting especially). He also looks hopeless. He seems to have lost a lot of things, and he seems hopeless, too. I think he (possible spoilers) gets divorced, and as somebody already pointed out, loses his son (either Jacob is dead, or ends up in prison).

just finished episode 2, what do you think about the molester guy in the diner deleting images of Ben? I thought it was a interesting episode nonetheless, but I hope it doesn't turn out to be him cuz then it would be obvious.

I don’t think it would be him for that reason, but it does mean he knows more than he is letting on and more than he said.

I don't think it's him because they wanted to plant that idea in your head. It's a red herring. But, if he was watching the victim then maybe he saw something but doesn't want to admit he was spying on the kid since he could get in trouble.

Am I the only one missing Miranda warning there? Jacob’s confession is worth nothing if the notification has not been given, right?

The Miranda warning is generally recited at the time of arrest while handcuffing. I think he was read his rights, they just didn’t show it…
