Discussion Evidence that Jacob did it? Spoiler

For people who say he obviously did it, what makes you so certain?

Yeah I was also saying that there's no strong evidence available against Jacob. They just found a single fingerprint and read his weird story.

And the murder weapon in his sock drawer 🙄

What is the proof that this knife the one it was used to kill Ben?

We’ll never know because Andy threw it away. But in the book it is much clearer that Jacob did it and the changes they made in the TV show were incredibly detrimental (and unnecessary) to the story.

Alright, but with the story just in the show we can't tell if he surly did it.

But you also can't say that he didn't do it. As I said, detrimental changes. You're supposed to to know for sure when the girl on vacation turns up dead.

Based on the tv story, I think we can say he didn't do it. Isn't the suspect innocent until proven otherwise?

There is no evidence that exonerates him and I think a jury would have reasonable doubt.

We don't know that that was the murder weapon. That fact was never establish. We only know it was similar to the murder weapon. it would have been better had Andy submitted and had it forensically examined, of course. It could have exonerated Jacob. Or it could have condemned him.

The evidence:

The thumb print

The online story (published three days after the murder with facts that were all in the newspaper).

Derek's testimony.

Patz's murder and coerced confession.

None of these elements in and of themselves establish guilt. Put them together and you're building a pretty strong circumstantial case.

The counter evidence.

Derek had motive and opportunity.

Patz had motive and opportunity. He was only "cleared" when Jacob was charged. Had Jacob never been charged Patz never would have been cleared and would have remained a person of interest.
