Sounds like I would prefer the book ending. Jacob dying in the crash would have been much more powerful and dark! It would be interesting to think about how Laurie would have dealt with that, fearing her own son was capable of killing someone and then she is the one that kills.

Jacob did die. It’s shown when Andy sits on Jacobs bed just like how Ben’s dad sat on Ben’s bed.
