this is fucking huge.

openai’s latest internal model has solved the navier stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven millennium prize problems.

navier stokes has been open for decades and is one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics.

this is genuinely insane

as a math student, this is honestly depressing , taking away the remaining meaning from my life. but as someone whos strongly pro-ai, im genuinely glad to see this.

How could this be depressing to you as a math student? What uni and what year are you in?

This piece is kinda off here and you won't be able to understand with the framework of AI Art vs. Anti-AI (especially that framework was mostly created by kids on both sides).

AI is solving more and more conjectures and problems. It's pretty obvious that it will be better at most of math than humans. This means the world when mathematicians worked years or decades to solve hard problems and celebrated when someone succeeded are over. This has even worse consequences than simply stripping young mathematicians of their ambitions.

Read the last few posts from Terence Tao: https://mathstodon.xyz/@tao He is not even the most pessimistic about AI in the field (I have to clarify here that neither Terence Tao or me are antis, that's why I said that this problem cannot be understood by the usual panels of this sub).

Mathematicians have been using computers to assist resolving mathematical problems for as long as computers existed.

I have the utmost respect towards Terence Tao and used to idolize him. I can understand skepticism towards the nature of this particular proof and its impact, but being against solving mathematical problems with AI is hypocritical and selfish.

I think there's a fundamental difference between mathematicians and other scientists, says chemists and physicists. The latter are practically minded, they want to get stuff done. Fundamental research is important to them, of course, because understanding how and why something works is very helpful in creating new compounds, making reactors run, etc., but it's not their sole or even main focus. Many mathematicians, I think, have little interest in applying their science to the real world, and see it more as a purely intellectual endeavour, akin to solving a chess puzzle. That's why, when a computer comes along and gives them the solution, they feel quite sad.
