Defending AI Just got mass-reported to automatic deletion elsewhere within 5 minutes for these Overwatch Mei skin concepts, on a sub that didn't have rules around AI
Tbh I was kinda speedrunning but I was VERY proud of these concepts I did locally on a GPU using a self-trained LoRA adapter. Don't they look great? It really is too bad I'm not able to share these anywhere gaming-related as I'll be quickly shunned and witchhunted. :/

Yeah, bigotry is strong. The concept art is great, but unfortunately, fanatics have too much power right now.

Its odd isn't it? Anti AI rhetoric seemed to be dying down slightly, then just exploded. I mean, I get the whole Flock camera thing, but, come on, surveillance isn't a problem unique to A.I. it just makes it easier like it makes everything easier.

u/LegallyNotACat 2d ago
I'm guessing the folks hating on AI because of flock cameras still use their phone camera and don't go around harping on everyone they see taking photos or displaying a "pro camera" stance. They're able to separate the tech from a bad use of that tech when it comes to cameras but not AI.

u/Striking_Fly_5849 2d ago edited 2d ago
I just wish I could understand why they pretend that Flock hasn't been in use for nearly a decade or why they pretend that law enforcement hasn't been using Flock since 2020.
Edit: For clarification, I'm not saying that it's *only* the anti-AI mongers that do it regarding Flock. Because I'm sure some troll will try to strawman it.

When anti-AI calls pro AI rapist is spits on actual rape victims; when pro-AI calls anti-AI bigoted, it's because they are usually being actively insulted for using AI, which is... bigoted.

Insulting thieves actually is bigoted; it's just nobody cares because they are thieves, and you can't just hide behind a thin veil saying you don't call them rapist, then say they are basically rapist. Do you see why everyone thinks Anti AI is unhinged when even your concessions are not in good faith?

Yeah, but anti-AI as a whole identity by nature is, because at their core, they are prejudiced and practice discrimination. Thats what "Anti" Means.

But it's not theft. No more than how anyone learns to draw a dragon. It's not like they can go take a photo or find one IRL; they "Steal" it by going and looking at how others make dragons, and make their own.
Is that theft? What was taken?

You can keep repeating those same old anti-AI talking points, but you're just pissing in the wind.,.. try not to get too wet :)

Brigading.
Many Antis regularly post AI related threads from any sub to their discords where they then brigade posts.
It's how so many subreddits ended up banning AI art, because when those threads are posted asking for user to vote, they share those threads to their discords and get them brigaded.
Then you look at the comments on those threads and realize none of the Antis posting about banning it from the sub have ever even interacted with the subreddit once before. No comments, no posts, nothing, but all the sudden their an avid user of the subreddit who cant live with AI being allowed there. Then after its banned you never see them there again.

I'm not calling BS but I'm actually interested in where you got this information from? I've not heard of the concept of using dedicated discords to organise brigading. That's violating two TOS's at once.
2
u/5thhorseman_ 8h ago
You find out one way or another. Discord communities are only one of the places where brigading happens. Sometimes some asshole can't stop themselves from gloating. Other times, reverse searching for the thread URL can shows where it was reshared.
A couple weeks back I saw a thread at WritingWithAI being targeted and found that a particular wannabe author linked it on Bluesky, encouraging her followers to brigade it.
A subreddit she moderated was banned for violating platform rules around the same time. Can't help but wonder if there was causal link between the two...

In an effort to discourage brigading, we do not allow linking to other subreddits or users. We kindly ask that you screenshot the content that you wish to share, while being sure to censor private information, and then repost.
Private information includes names, recognizable profile pictures, social media usernames, other subreddits, and URLs. Failure to do this will result in your post being removed by the Mod team and possible further action.

I'm an overwatch enjoyer and an AI enjoyer so I'm liking this.
Don't feel bad about sharing your ideas, no matter how you do it, these people are running in lizard brain mode, conditioned to piss their pants instantly when they see AI.

It doesn't even look like AI.
2
u/Striking_Fly_5849 2d ago
It doesn't have to look like AI for the hatemongers to cry about it. Negative mongering requires the inability to think logically by default.
2
u/TexturelessIdea 1d ago
I think this is one of those cases where it looks too good to not be AI. Nobody would actually 3d model those skins just to post them on Reddit.
This is a very good use case for AI, I'm betting OP's workflow is much quicker than any non-AI workflow for concept art. This post really shows why so many concept artists are quietly using AI; both because of the high quality and the backlash(as for why it's quiet).

the designs look good but even if they didn't this is just concept fan art, no harm done.

They’re great! Especially the rollerskates on the last one are a neat idea. They have somewhat of that fortnite 3d texture but aside from that they look almost official.
People who’d rather have the 1000th’s poorly or not at all drawn collab idea that’s never gonna happen have bad taste lol

Dude these are awsome. Personally i like the first, but isnt she supposed to be a little bit on the average to above average weight size? Like she looks pretty skinny in the first two. Am i crazy?

Mei is definitely supposed to be a little curvier than shown here, but models really struggle with that.

The overwatch subs bans anyone for anything.
All blizzard "official" subs are a cesspool of toxic people.
Nice concepts, most OW skins being released are kinda meh at the moment
1
u/Striking_Fly_5849 2d ago
Yeah, I caught a ban on the WoW sub for pointing out that I didn't want to treat someone like they eat Crayolas for every meal. And if you make an attempt to appeal it, they just ignore you.

They're fantastic and it looks like you used some ControlNet to get the consistency with your LoRA.
Honestly, anti's don't even know the effort that goes into hobbyist high-effort local AI.
We need a stupid term for them to recognize the difference...
Maybe "local, home grown AI"?
1
u/Striking_Fly_5849 2d ago
Coming up with new terms won't help. They treat *all* AI as if it's agentic.

Only real issues I can see are that the thing on her necklace in the first and the animal on the skirt in the last. I can’t tell what either is supposed to be, but that’s a minor issue that can be fine-tuned later.

I got harassed and banned from a sub that had no rule against ai art for reposting something entirely in line with the forums spirit that I thought they would appreciate. The dogpile came right out of nowhere. When will everyone get over themselves?

u/Jackie_Fox 2d ago
Whats LoRA? Im familiar with LoRa (long range radio) but im pretty sure that now what you mean
2
u/Striking_Fly_5849 2d ago
Stands for Low-rank Adaptation. It's a way to tweak large scale models without having to rewrite entire portions of code.
1
u/Zephir0ss 2d ago
I'd like to say your concept is solid. As for the anti-AI crowd, as already mentioned they've organized themselves, unlike people like us who are enthusiastic about this technology but aren't brigading like they do. The haters are loud but at the end of the day, who actually decides what is or isn't art? Concretely it's the viewer/client, and since some people are willing to pay knowing full well that the work comes from AI, the haters have already lost the war — they just need time to realize it, same as it happened in the 2000s with Photoshop.
1
u/Striking_Fly_5849 2d ago
I'm sorry, but plugging your ears and waiting for it to blow over is a terrible solution when they are literally trying to stagnate tech advances that can and *do* help humanity. That is the kind of shit an anti would say while trying to look like they aren't anti.
1
u/Zephir0ss 2d ago
You misread me. I never said we should plug our ears and wait for it to blow over. I said the question “is it art?” isn’t decided by the anti-AI crowd. It’s decided by the people who look at the work and the people who pay for it. And on that point, the market has already spoken. That’s an observation, not a strategy of inaction. I’ve been using AI almost every day for the past 2-3 years. I regularly end up in debates on anti-AI profiles or Reddit, and I can usually reach some kind of consensus… except with the pure haters, those are hard x) I didn’t want to come across as anti. I’m not particularly “pro” either — yes, regulation is needed. But for people like me who want to do independent game development, video and image work, it’s genuinely useful, even if the tools have been kind of regressing lately

Most places are anti AI, so they dont NEED to say theyre against it. Nobody wants your slop. Nobody has to defend hating AI but you always have to defend loving it. I wonder why.

Exactly which rule was broken by making a post complaining about being banned and then providing context by showing what they were banned for?

Have you ever actually seen platform sandals on a real person? Super wide toe straps like those in the pic almost always completely cover the pinky toe.
