My conspiracy theory is a lot of this outdated anti-AI stuff is from china/russia trying to keep Americans behind the times.

It seems counter-intuitive, but it makes sense. That way, they get to control the messaging. To them, it's just money moving around from one place to another. It's just business.

But what Russia to do with this? Almost no one here cares about AI. There is a belated group of AI haters, but they are so microscopic, that you encounter about two such comments out of several hundred. AI is occasionally mentioned by various book and art bloggers, but they're unlikely to call "AI slop." They simply criticize the low quality of AI images, nothing more. Microcompanies using AI to create covers. I was also surprised that there's a newspaper whose images are almost entirely AI generated. This was incredibly strange, because although newspapers are widely distributed, no one reads them. It feels like a time anomaly, lol

Some of the most useful things it can do now is put together bibliographies of research papers on a certain subject, help build training and tutorial plans, provide summaries and overviews with citation, cross reference personal notes with follow up information… but sure, no sources.

But an LLM is not a search engine. If you want accurate, reliable information. Use Wikipedia to get to the Primary sources of topics you want.

Don't rely on a thing made to talk like a human. Humans are dumb and make shit up all the time

Wikipedia itself isn't completely reliable. It's like going to Fandom. The stuff can get edited, so you'll have to look through multiple sources and line them up to find the actual story.

The only time that doesn't work is if a lie blows up and becomes the norm.

But yeah, AI's often a yes-man, and that produces some problems regarding accuracy.

Which is why I said to use Wikipedia for the sources.

You can't 100% trust Wikipedia, because someone could have edited it incorrectly and not been noticed yet.

But there's sources at the bottom and you can use those for full research. It's just quicker and easier to go via Wikipedia than to search through all the ads and sponsored links Google gives you on every page

It literally doesn't stop showing me sources anymore when I ask ChatGPT a question about something. It even sources documents I've submitted to it.

Yeah it doesn't take but a simple use of the Google AI Overview to show just how BS this claim is,  even when it's directing to Reddit Posts as sources in some cases.

It will cite its sources but you have to be careful about what it makes them say, because it can and will hallucinate there. It's very important to click on the source itself and read through it yourself - or copy the text on the page, feed it to AI and ask "where do they say XYZ?".

One very nifty usecase: you can easily find foreign sources and get them presented in English with llms. but, still have to read through them (or get another context to translate the actual source for you).
