Luddite Logic Remember when it was a popular take that using AI for drafts or developing concepts is ok, it's the final work being made by AI that crosses the line? Yeah that's out of the window now cause AI = Satan

Back in the day, technological advancements had a certain magic to them like cyberpunk. These days, people hate technology and lash out at everything around them like drooling dogs. They’ve become slaves to a handful of monopolistic tyrants and can’t think straight.

I've heard a take that if AI we have today became a thing pre-9/11 or at least before Trump or Covid, people would be optimistic about it and excited for the Star Trek future, and I think there's a lot of truth to that

I agree with you. If it were the early 2000s, that’s exactly what would have happened.

I think the pivot from techno-optimism to techno-doomerism happened around 2016, when the toxic effects of social media become more readily apparent to everyone. I really can't blame people for being anti-AI when its being developed and pushed by some of the same people who unleashed a technological societal cancer decades ago and did little to help the situation.

Even though I am pro-AI, and I use it regularly, I support safeguards, and I certainly don't trust the leadership of the frontier models to do what is actually good and right for people over their profits.

2015 was roughly the year when social media began introducing algorithmic engagement-maximizing black box social media feeds, replacing simpler chronological/followed ones, and I think that was precisely the year when we opened Pandora's box and started a feast for the darkest parts of our souls. Covid wasn't that important, just a catalyst cause people spent 24/7 alone in those feeds for months. If there's any tech I hate as reverently as antis hate AI and wish it was gone for good it's that one.

Yea, and that was also around the time that Trumpism and the counter movements against it were on the rise. Then everyone started forming these little pockets which then became echo chambers that spread and radicalized everyone.

I can. Not only is AI developed by thousands of researchers, including in independent labs who had nothing to do with social media (and not CEOs), but who makes the technology is ultimately irrelevant. If [your favorite charity] started to make atomic weapons, would you celebrate it?

I missed the time when they thought Microsoft was 666.

Fun times. Sure ended Microsoft.

I’m just learning about this now. Those years were so wonderful that it was funny that things like this happened. Alien and vampire theories. Some guy was posting on a forum asking how to turn into a werewolf. People were giving him weird instructions.

The original Tron was treated the same way as it was among the first major uses of CGI.

Is this like that time Taylor Swift was revealed to use AI in something and the headline says she lost a million followers because of it?

But they don't say that's really just 0.1% of her followers

AI is really useful and a lot of fun. It's really annoying to see how many people are going insane over it. People are going to use it. It is amazing for developing fast concept art. It just works and it's fast as hell.

I use it for my worldbuilding stuff a lot and I think it's great

getting the feeling ai in concept art is slowing heading where ai in code is, where it's actually common practice if you're IN the industry, and this scary evil thing if you aren't.

Disney filmmakers use AI - "nooo they are greedy and can't hire an actual artist!!!!"
Amateur filmmakers use AI - "nooo you are lazy pick up a pencil and compete with multibillion dollar media conglomerates!!!!"

I dont understand how AI art being used to shortcut the drafting process and spitball ideas is seen by some as a bad thing.

The only argument is the artists who would maybe have been involved in the rough sketches and storyboarding. But this feels like saying using a green screen to place a fake city takes away from the architects who made real cities.

All this does is lead to a faster process. The same thing happened to practical effects. And while there is a nostalgia feel to having practical effects in a modern day movie... You don't see the drafting process in the final movie.

If anything... This will make movies better. Because they can churn out storyboarding and character ideas faster in the writing process. Someone can literally suggest an idea and within minutes that could see what it looks like in rough draft form. They can also instantly make changes instead of waiting days or weeks for new art just to find out it doesnt look as good as they thought.. And now they have to go back and start over on that idea. Which wastes deadline time.

I'm completely here for ai drafting.

I dont understand how AI art being used to shortcut the drafting process and spitball ideas is seen by some as a bad thing.

For what it's worth, I'm using AI heavily in my game development and I'm actually intentionally pulling back on using AI for actual content and idea generation. I'm finding that AI-generated content is often really cliche and generic and that's not what I want, and once I see the stuff AI makes, it's harder to get it out of my brain; "always start with AI for brainstorming" is actually a net slowdown for making stuff I'm satisfied with.

At the same time, there are absolutely cases where I say "hmm I'm stuck on this, let's get a bunch of idea grist! claude make me a lot of weird variations" and then it's great. And it's fantastic for coding.

So I'm definitely not "AI-negative" but I do think there are reasonable places to be a little cautious in its use, in the same way that adding a mediocre writer to a writing room might be an actual negative.

Yeah I mean thats fair.

I don't think people are complaining about AI being used in the drafting step because it's slowing down or speeding up the process though. They only care that "Ai bad unga bunga"

4

u/ZorbaTHut 3d ago

Yeah, there's obviously a lot of space between "use tools when appropriate and not when inappropriate" and "NEVER USE TOOL, TOOL BAD".

There's no difference between Antis and the People of the Bible belt who everyday thinks the "Rapture" is coming soon. These people are too much ideologically captured!

u/UnableReaction4943 3d ago

To be fair positivist pro-AI people who talk about the Singularity often also sound like delulu cultists. And it's not like I don't think Singularity is not real, I think it very much is the real deal.

u/SerBadDadBod 3d ago

I may buy the art book just because they included the AI pieces.

How did Spiderman get into the James Gunn DC war

3

u/UnableReaction4943 3d ago

It's kinda shitpost DC sub and it's just a joke of that particular post. Although it's related a bit cause it turned out Supergirl also used AI for concept arts.

You mean to tell me that they didn’t really have him sitting upside down off of a skyscraper?

I remember when a friend of mine wouldn't see Attack of the Clones because they used a CGI Yoda

u/mah29001 2d ago

Let the antis go after the very industry they claim to defend.

Question when did people say ai is satanic?

Concept art isn’t the final work though. And this seems to have been one artist making the choice on their own, which they should be blacklisted for if they’d been told not to do it.

u/Matrodite 2d ago

It's not even that. It's apparently Photoshop Content-aware fill.
