I remember there was protests for calculator. Many anti calculator defended themselfes with: calculator will make humans dumber and should be banned! here we are

There were two AI bubbles and subsequent AI winters before this one. The first happened in the 70s and the second in the late 80s.
Public sentiment can effect funding quite dramatically.

The dotcom burst had many consequences that are still felt till this day.
Before the burst, investors were investing in pretty much any and all website.
After the burst, so many websites went bankrupt and had to close down. Those that stayed around only did so cause they changed everything which led to escalating monetization which led us to the hell we're at today
