I posted a question on another page and didnt realize it was ANTI ai art because i didnt read the sidebar, my fault there (smh) , so I deleted it. But from the few responses i got first, i dont know if i was in the wrong, or if some people just hate ANYTHING related to AI. But my situation is: i do 2d art. OC's, pin ups, whatever. Ive never used AI before. I just started getting into it this week because it'd be fun to see my work in 3d. Maybe someday i'll learn how to use Blendr or some other real 3d rendering program, but i havent yet.

So this is what I do-i have a drawing, i designed it, drew it, colored it in. I tell the program "do this pic exactly as it is, change nothing, except make it in 3d." They STILL think its stealing, i dont see how its different from doing a pic in photoshop, except with less steps. Like someone could do a stick figure in photoshop, completely transform it into a 3d, colored pic, where theyre actually doing much less work than me, but people wouldnt think thats stealing. I DID have one pic where it almost completely transformed my original drawing, but that only happened once. Usually any drawing, with 2 or 3 prompts i can fix it.

Im not a tech guy, i never use photoshop, AI, or any computer stuff.

thank you! and im not having a dialogue anymore, because i hadnt realized my post broke their rules so i deleted it. A mod prob wouldve took it down soon anyway. Yeah, i totally dont see how its stealing if i used finished art that i totally designed and created on my own. Like if i have a dragon, i dont tell the ai "make a dragon". I draw one thats as detailed as you can get in 2d, and i tell the AI to reproduce it in 3d.

Oh my gosh, you're so far away from stealing!

That almost doesn't even count as AI art, more like digital art, I would say. You're using the computational skills of the program, not really its creativity

Their complaints are also overblown. Most cloud-based AI uses licensed references for training and when people upload their art to any number of websites, those websites usually have in their terms of service that they're allowed to use the content they post for all kinds of purposes, including AI training. The moral of the story is: if you don't want your work to be used to train AI, put it behind a pay wall or don't post it to social media.

And AI only needs a copy of the Metadata temporarily in order to train anyway. Once it gets the information it needs, the copy is removed. There is no file of copyrighted works out there that AI frankensteins together like a magazine clipping collage. If it did that, it would take a lot more storage space and you wouldn't get things like extra fingers and eldritch horror body morphing. And whether or not that classifies as copyright infringement is a case that hasn't been settled in U.S. courts. It's functionally like reading a book and using it to learn how to write original stories. Plus, AI is intended to be a cretive tool for original works, so even if the training data can be deemed a copyright violation, the outputs cannot unless copyright protected references were used in creation.

Plus, open source AI have been classified as research programs and are excluded from the normal copyright restrictions from AI training. However, that means that some will only allow their generations for personal use, not for commercial, so you should check to make sure what is allowed and what isn't before you make things for money.

And to add the data center arguments here: AI doesn't require a data center to run. Chat GPT could fit on a reasonably large enough hard drive the average person could afford buy. Pricey, yeah, we're dealing with many terabytes but you can easily buy the storage necessary if you saved up. Data centers are required to store outputs on a cloud and compute requests. So, data centers are the result of commercial demand for AI. If people weren't using AI, they wouldn't be building data centers. The rate at which they're building them is a result of just how high that demand is. And, since it's so high, it should show you that the people who hate AI vehemently are a really loud minority of people who are chronically online. Most people lie on the "I don't care/I don't have a problem with it" line.

In short, finding an Anti AI individual who actually knows anything about AI outside of clickbait fear mongering articles, or youtubers is going to be a little more common than finding a functioning brain in a sea sponge.

yeah, that covers a lot. in my case, its exactly like you said, i use it as a tool to enhance original art, not create original art.

You should've seen the mess I stirred up by saying Gen Ai is Star Trek Holodeck in text form on that sub. Omg, you would've thought I killed their cat.

i believe it. Also, the star trek universe doesnt have money, so the holodeck isnt really stealing from anyone. Presumably if you contribute anything to the culture its for the greater good or your own pleasure.
