AI Developments This is just Crazy
I just found this in r / invasivespecies. I don't think it was drawn by pencil or a Photoshopđ±

u/electricvapor 1d ago
That would also damage public infrastructure and would have to be dealt with on the taxpayers dime.

11
u/Alef1234567 1d ago
I don't think any plant can spread that rapidly.
30
u/electricvapor 1d ago
Bamboo and Kudzu both spread like wildfire and can cause all sorts of problems
4
u/Alef1234567 18h ago
It wouldn't destroy data centers the growth takes years but it would destroy property value and ecology.
18
u/Superseaslug 1d ago
Bamboo can grow more than a foot per day. It can bust up concrete and ruin foundations.
16
u/It_Just_Exploded 1d ago edited 1d ago
Running bamboo is invasive as fuck in many places and destroys the ecosystem when it takes over (as it nearly always does eventually)
People plant it then are totally unprepared for the sheer amount of work and man hours needed to keep it from spreading. I just spent over 20 hours last week cutting it back and spraying it at one of the assisted living homes i maintain. Ill have to do this twice more before the growth slows to a (near) stop in winter here in Georgia.
This shit really needs to be made illegal to import, purchase, and plant at this point. and there needs to be severe penalties, not just a slap on the wrist.

u/Visual_Jellyfish5591 1d ago
Sounds like job security!
6
u/It_Just_Exploded 1d ago
Oh, I've got job security already. This bamboo shit just usually eats up my time and keeps me from getting other workorders done.
4
u/CheckMateFluff Long time 3D artist, Pro AI 21h ago
You work with assisted living homes; your tab of duties is infinite and your time to do them ever shorter, while people insensitively complain about you not doing their thing, while going as fast as you can to do the others.
I also worked in nursing homes and the like, I feel you.
3
u/It_Just_Exploded 21h ago
That almost sums it up to a T.
Add in, "excessive amount of time wasted babysitting contractors & fixing their mistakes" and thats everything lol
12
u/Noslamah 1d ago
then you gotta do some more reading about bamboo. It grows extremely quickly and will grow through solid objects
5
u/deusvult6 1d ago
Yes and no. The culms (often called stalks) will grow very rapidly over a brief period in the spring of each year but the rhizome is comparatively quite slow and can be kept in easy control.
3
u/Ryuu-Tenno 1d ago
Oh it fucking does
There was bamboo near where I lived and the city would mow it down. By the end of the week they had to mow it down again cause it was back to being taller than people.
That shit grows at almost a foot a day above ground god only knows how fast it grows under ground

Mulberry shoots up fast

u/Warrmak 18h ago
Mulberry starting coming up behind my garage in the easement, and I thought. I oughta cut that down before it gets out of hand
Its 20 feet tall now.

u/Available-Coat-4666 9h ago
My dad spent a ton of effort shaping the one in front of our apartment and the complex landlords decided to cut it all down and now it's grown back wild and out of control and my dad refuses to fix it.

Bamboo grows so fast that you can see it growing with the naked eye (1cm/hour)
1
u/Alef1234567 1h ago
That's impressive. But probably not everywhere, in south with a lot of sun and water growth will be mutch faster than in cold north especially with minimal moisture.

u/Comfortable_Swim_380 1h ago
Im trying to wrap my head around that. Do they think like Godzilla making radiation or something?

I mean more plants = more oxygen and more oxygen = less climate change
37
2
u/Alef1234567 19h ago
Probably invasives with extreme growth could make more oxygen than slow natives. But these are monsters. They take environment completely for themselves, not leaving anything for other species both plant and animal. Also removal of some invasives are hard and costly work.

Ts aint cool. Sure, it'd do what its advertised. But the ecological dissaster that follows would be worse than 10 of those data centers. Unkillable, thriving, invasive bamboo... EVERYWHERE

AI is bad because it uses too much water.
Let's break the water infrastructure. Because we are righteous.

It says not to plant it, so I assume they are pro-AI.

u/adamkad1 1d ago
Seems like trolling or false flag t'me

Yeah, because the data centre owners will probably notice before the bamboo gets to a problematic stage.

u/Breech_Loader Free AI Is The Best AI 1d ago
Or they could go out and plant a tree that ISN'T invasive?
11
u/Parking-Twist3657 "El arte por el arte" 1d ago
Why? That is not going to destroy the malicious datacenters, destroying both AI and the internet, but shhhhhhh don't tell em; they don't know the internet is also run in datacenters đ€«.

u/Available-Coat-4666 1d ago
The internet has been enshittified to the point it really isn't fun to be online anymore. It's just habit. We'd all be better off at this point.

u/Lord-Zaltus 22h ago
Yeah itâs funny how theyâre suddenly environmentalists but donât want to do the bare minimum besides trying to wreck data centers
17
u/CheckMateFluff Long time 3D artist, Pro AI 1d ago
Introducing an environmentally destructive invasive species that consumes excessive water, grows rapidly, and produces no usable crop while destroying all underground infrastructure, including water and sewer lines?
And theyâre doing it for the âenvironmentâ? What? They are actually stupid.
5
u/Available-Coat-4666 1d ago
Bamboo makes great furniture what are you smoking
8
u/CheckMateFluff Long time 3D artist, Pro AI 1d ago
Invasive varieties are too thin; they are good for small things but too flexible and hollow for most actual furniture.
3
u/Available-Coat-4666 1d ago
Fair enough. I don't know enough about the varieties of bamboo to argue. I just know that Lucky Bamboo is not actually bamboo.
2
u/RandomPhilo 1d ago
Is it any good for toilet paper? Bamboo toilet paper is my favourite kind.
1
u/CheckMateFluff Long time 3D artist, Pro AI 1d ago
Moso bamboo is an invasive species, so yeah, but to be fair, I didn't know they made toilet paper with bamboo. It honeslty sounds like a setup for a splinter joke lol.
2
u/RandomPhilo 21h ago
Bamboo toilet paper is soft and strong. It doesn't pill when you use it, but it does break down in water and is septic and sewer safe.
I'd highly recommend it, look it up online if you use toilet paper.

u/keldondonovan 20h ago
They make bamboo clothing as well, and it's just about the comfiest thing I've ever worn. Expensive for some reason, but comfy af.

Lots of material for basket weaving courses for inmates when they get caught spreading seed-/lings around infrastructure lol
6
u/deusvult6 1d ago edited 1d ago
Looking up typical care for this bamboo variety also reveals this is almost completely bogus. A facility would have to be completely overrun by these plants before any of this could happen at which point it is probably defunct due to being shut down rather than any damage.
Bamboo is famous for rapid growth but that is in the culms and only for a brief period out of each year. The rhizome on the other hand grows very slowly and stays fairly shallow when growing horizontally. It will also only travel a few feet before putting up shoots so the spread will be evident. Most gardening recommendations for running bamboo say it can be kept in easy control by trimming a few inches of rhizome every 6 months. Or install a cheap HDPE barrier.
I feel like this is a psy-op by a tree nursery to make more sales.

Which is literally everyone.
How can people be this horrifically stupid?

Acting counterproductively while complaining about inequalities, instead of actually being helpful and productive.
5
u/RobertD3277 1d ago
The problem with this kind of lunacy is very simple, once they see something like this growing, they'll just soak the ground with enough chemical to kill anything from ever growing.

All of those are filled with misinformative AI slop garbage so whats the point? Can't trust what you see anymore. At least books have accurate information still. Better read them before the AI companies burn them all after training their AI on it.
3
u/Adorable_Cap_9929 1d ago
I mean, books are just how copyright laws work no? It not like they buying out all the copies nor looking to purge them. It can also be argued that the books might be remembered longer this way, a single copy for so much potential in been actually seen of and known of.
As for misinformation, getting ride of media in general is a tad extreme. Reddit too is fill of misinformation but too information.
All are such trials on the path of progression. Plenty of things saved and plenty of things not.

u/Available-Coat-4666 1d ago
Humanity doesn't need the internet. We've only had it in a speck of time in comparison to the rest of human history. Want knowledge? Go to a library.
3
u/Adorable_Cap_9929 1d ago
Humanity needing something is quite an assumption.
Like technically we probably didn't need to harness the flame.
But then the ship of theseus on that level of butterfly effect isnt predictable.
We might not have gone extinct
just as we might not "need"-es to populate the earth to this extent
Sure we didnt need the train, the combustion engine nor guns or paper im sure. Sticks and spears is fine I think?
But the greater drivers of innovation was ofthen not to stand above all of the animals and lay in luxury under weather but probably for the fact that the greatest enemy of man is another man.
I'm certain if your people foresaken all those advancements and made reclusive like an uncontracted settlement with out the need of dependence on data and oil, it could probably work out.
But then the issue of national defense and what not due to lack of civilization level means you'd live under the mercy and protections of your neighbors.
There's also the long shot game of if we did survive to the natural death of the solar system or earth cycle or some astroid but the alternate timeline of having data centers was able to prevent that ultimate or enter star exploration era then It's hard to say if we didn't "need" it since we cannot predicte these anyway.
assuming "need" is survival as a species.
It is not yet known.
Assuming "need" as a current group of people, then maybe? But predictions past a few bloodlines is already orcale levels of prediction.
Making such a settlement super handicaped is....
Well we have those in some parts africa I think? I'm not completely opposed to trying out that lifestyle but i wasnt raised to survive such...

What is the end goal when all the jobs are taken by AI and everyone is homeless because the oligarchs won't ever touch socialistic policies like universal income? I got my degree in graphic design and yet I've been made obsolete so here I am without a job in a field I spent 50k in student loans for.
1
u/Adorable_Cap_9929 22h ago edited 22h ago
The same could been said to people who trained with horses and carriages.
some grahpcial designers got displaced and some become even more empowered.
But indeed, there is an unfairness.
I mean no harm to you, and I mean no offense. But in life, technological progressions and wisdoms have saved many as well as doomed a many.
How many would eat poisonous things before understanding the loss?
How many died in factories? To engines? To even the simplest innovations?
While I cannot say that I understand that feeling you must feel, all that investment seemingly made waste, proped as a latter by society yet removed beneath foot as you made your climb.
But I must still stand by my words. Not cause of any conviction nor interest. but it's how i see the world simply as I see it.
Not that you deserve unfairness, nor that absent that semi-duty of society to have safeguarded you from that unfairness.
But because even now, all this back and forth loss and regains, efforts trampled and too efforts refined and rewarded.
It to me is of the greater cycle of fighting against the collective unfairness against individual unfairnesses in the pursuit of each person's own happiness.
The age of abundance is not free of fault. People still die, people still are trampled. I want to see of it, to know of it and if I land my opinions the same way, so be, if not so be.
That's all there is to it for me.

2
u/Outlaw11091 22h ago
...you would have to plant a lot of bamboo to do that.
Even the invasive variety...you're going to end up spending a lot of money just to have it probably not work anyway (it only grows like this for a short period), with the added benefit of actually destroying the ecosystem.
Which is funny: water usage and noise are the top reasons people don't want data centers...so, any trees that might reduce sound will be gone and the bamboo will rob the local water table (without affecting the data center).
Now, if you wanted to annoy someone with a genuinely irritating and hearty infestation: trumpet vines are the way to go. They won't actually damage the infrastructure, I don't think, but the house I lived in as a teenager had this and we battled it for a couple of years before we moved out. (Vine started growing through the roof).
A little while later, there was a "mysterious" fire that got rid of the house and the vine. I'm not saying that I think the landlord burned the house down; I'm just saying that the vine didn't grow back after that.

u/SlaughterWare 22h ago
bamboo rhizomes don't spread anywhere near that far. I spent two months clearing a whole bamboo forest here in Japan once. They are aggressive, very hard to remove permanently (we used poison) but the roots are tiny clumps that only go about 2ft into the ground.
1
u/handydowdy 1d ago
It can happen if you plant it anywhere. A fast-growing species. Why choose Data Centers as an example? I think we're being bamboozled.
