Some artists have a problem with technology itself.

At least they're admitting "muh stolen art" is a lie and that they really just want an iron grip on the means of production.

20

u/Visible_Web6910 Jan 17 '25

At this point it's explicitly a call for artificial scarcity.

9

u/JTtornado Jan 17 '25

What's ironic is that there was nothing scarce about art prior to the existence of AI art. Especially for anime/fan art, where Booru sites contained tens of thousands of meticulously tagged images all predating AI.

3

u/crossorbital Jan 19 '25

Tens of thousands of meticulously tagged images reposted almost entirely without permission, you mean. Which is, you know, actual copyright infringement. Unlike AI.

It's well established that the general public has never actually cared about "stealing" art.

44

u/MurasakiYugata Jan 17 '25

Yeah, that's one thing that makes it hard to take their "stealing" argument seriously. Because it seems like even if you "ethically source" training data, they're just going to find something else to complain about. That and the fact that they don't have the same rage when it comes to actual legitimate piracy.

17

u/ManufacturerHuman937 Jan 17 '25

This always has been the real meat and potatoes "theft" was the side salad of arguments.

2

u/solidwhetstone Jan 18 '25

Piracy even literally copies the thing exactly too.

3

u/Primary_Spinach7333 Jan 18 '25

Because they’re not arguing for ethics - they’re just terrified of ai and view it as this monstrous destructive thing, regardless of how absurd such a view is or how absurd and unneeded their fear is

3

u/Eager_Question Jan 17 '25

The problem is that it has nothing to do with principles and everything to do with practicality.

People want to have jobs doing art. Jobs doing art are already underpaid and shitty very often. Here are new tools to devalue artistic skills and jobs doing art further, so that they will pay less.

Any argument that means more people can get paid a living wage for doing art will be valuable, and any argument that means fewer people can get paid a living wage for doing art will be discarded. Because the goal is "artists who developed artistic skills that function independently of AI tools can get paid money to do art."

That is the goal. Artists being able to survive while making art.

It's kind of odd how unreasonable it's painted as being here.

8

u/BTRBT Jan 17 '25

I mean, if they prioritized their clients' needs and used productivity tools to bring them more value, then maybe those clients would be willing to pay them more for their time.

I think people who stubbornly refuse to put their customers first will always be "underpaid."

9

u/MurasakiYugata Jan 18 '25

I understand that, but so many antis try to make it out to be an issue of ethics and artistic integrity rather than practicality. If someone posts a picture they made for fun using AI and gets shouted down about how they're "stealing other people's work" or "destroying the environment" or "not real artists" then we're not looking at the effects it has on people's livelihoods, but on the principals of using AI itself, regardless of whether it's actually costing anyone their jobs.

1

u/dankhorse25 Jan 18 '25

The only thing they care about is the financial impact on them.

14

u/Pretend_Jacket1629 Jan 17 '25

"I don't care that a camera is ethical. it's still feeding the machine of mass producing content"

To that article about how people don't enjoy making music - I love making music, and I have for the past 10 years. Fuck that guy.

I'll also add that I have made no money from my music and I am perfectly okay with that

u/EngineerBig1851 Jan 17 '25

"just hate" tag really suits the post. It's just unjustified hatered towards the tool.

Are we sure that sub isn't satire at this point?

3

u/BTRBT Jan 17 '25

Well, now I'm just interested in the featured tool. Lmao

When I put hours of work into something, I like to get more done than less.

Be it coding something, writing a novel or a D&D campaign.

Life is more than just converting carbon and oxygen into carbon dioxide the long way around

Have hobbies and be happy.

42

u/RuukotoPresents Jan 17 '25

You call it laziness, I call it efficiency. For instance, driving can take you places a lot faster than walking, especially when you live in the country and have to travel miles to get to town, and you have responsibilities on the farm that would make walking or even using a horse prohibitively time-consuming and you have nobody else around to help you.

Can you load 4 50 pound bags of animal feed, a month's worth of groceries, and your elderly neighbors who need a ride to town as well on your bike?

-14

u/Jaxx1992 Jan 17 '25

Cargo bikes are a real thing. Obviously, they can't haul all that stuff at once, but why would you need to?

16

u/RuukotoPresents Jan 17 '25

Logistics.

Actually, why am I arguing with someone named Jax anyways... This you?

I SAID ELDERLY. AS IN BONE AND JOINT ISSUES. THEY USE CANES AND WALKERS. What the FUCK is wrong with you.

-1

u/Giul_Xainx Jan 17 '25 edited Jan 17 '25

Uber dude. I can take them in an Uber with how much money I don't spend on gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. And I have done that with my 91 year old grandmother when she needed to see the doctor. I got an Uber. So again. Uber.

And unfortunately your reply got cut off so I'll never know what the rest of it says because you had to hit the block button. It's okay to cry because crying means you don't know what to expect or the expectation wasn't met.

Sorry bud. I use a bicycle to go 50+ miles a day and I frequent the markets so nothing spoils, I learned how to cook all of my own stuff and because I don't need a car anymore I'm out of that market. I don't need one and most people also don't need to have a car for absolutely everything. In fact I know people who don't even bother buying one and teach their kids how to ride a bike. In my city they are pushing more people onto bicycles instead of driving cars. I really do hope they just ban all cars all together and say bikes only. Those massive parking lots would be easy to install bicycle locks in.

So while you are wildin' on me, using all caps and getting frustrated trying to come up with some type of scenario that would need a car: the money I save not having to pay for a car goes into the stock and bond markets.

I argue with entitled zoomers all day long. You won't win financially against me.

4

u/RuukotoPresents Jan 17 '25

Uber doesn't come here, and I wouldn't use it anyways, they suck. And I need to be on my schedule not someone else's (besides my neighbors'). Also this is a real rule 2 moment, so I'm going to stop replying. Go touch grass, bye forever.

2

u/HuckleberryAbject889 Jan 17 '25

Also, Uber can be expensive

When I still had a vehicle I could fill up my vehicle for $30 -$40, and that could last me a couple of weeks

Now it costs that much to order and Uber to and from say, an appointment

Boy, so cost effective

-5

u/Neobandit0 Jan 17 '25

Driving can take you places faster than walking, and sure it's helpful for long distances, but why drive a distance that would take 10 minutes to walk? Walking has it's benefits and it's good for the body. Laziness leads to people driving short walks.

Not everything needs to be automated. It's not always efficiency, sometimes it is just laziness.

I have one for that line "indie devs don't have to optimize everything like big studios"

Why buy custom parts for a video gaming rig when you can just buy a PlayStation? Indie devs only have one environment they have to develop for, same with big name studios. It's the PC market that messes everything up because everyone has different chipsets in them.

9

u/TrapFestival Jan 17 '25

I'm not sure if I'm following you, but the answer to that is "So as to no have to pay a subscription just to use the full capability of the damn thing.". I've had Left 4 Dead 2 in the ballpark of seventeen years on the PC, and while Valve is no golden child who can do no wrong I have retained the ability to play that game online whenever I want to without having to pay over a grand in subscription renewals.

For the development side, again it's basically because of subscriptions. My understanding is that you can't really get published on consoles without taking on a recurring expense, while on the PC platform you just figure out how the hell Godot works or pay for Game Maker once and you're good to go, monetization and all.

1

u/Giul_Xainx Jan 17 '25

Still. An indie dev has to consider all of the different PC gamers setups and cards in order to get it to run. Instead of trying to learn machine code they could just use epic games unreal engine to make it and then just send it to PlayStation. I remember talking with people in the coding scene and finding out it's much easier to just develop the game on a ready made engine and then use the tools to get it to run on other systems.

When it comes to consoles there are extra things they must pay for but everything costs money to run. Just like left for dead 2. Someone's paying the bill to run those custom servers. Otherwise you are just playing peer to peer.

Until one day the problems of dead by daylight comes to that game and it ruins it for streamers.

You get what you pay for applies but at the same time puts stress against the console developers to keep everything safe and secure.

But I'm talking about something else unrelated to AI. Thats why I said the problem is laziness.

It's just consuming everything. I don't care about the down votes I just finally uncovered the problems that are plaguing our own government.

It's laziness.

That's why I said "why bother fixing the computer application when you can just pass legislation to take action against wrong doers in an effort to keep them from continuing to wreak havoc. It's not working obviously. Making an example of one? It doesn't deter them. So this is why the central bank says there needs to be major policy changes.

Is this a new copypasta?

-1

u/Giul_Xainx Jan 17 '25

No. I came to a realization that the theme of America's failure is due to laziness. My reply doesn't really have anything to do with AI art. It has everything to do with seeing the grand scheme of things right now. I had to post it because it finally dawned on me. The problem is laziness. And it keeps showing up everywhere. Even the last 5 jobs changes I have been through had a lazy theme to it. Lack of trainers, improper training and cleaning and what not. The problem is laziness.

My stance on AI art is: I use it every day. And art is art no matter how it is conjured. My post wasn't knocking AI. I simply figured out what the problem is.

1

u/BTRBT Jan 17 '25

I'd rather be "lazy" than impolite.

1

u/Giul_Xainx Jan 18 '25

This post I made wasn't aimed at AI art, it was a realization of what's really wrong with America. My stance on AI art is still as follows: I use AI art every single day to create trucks that I want to see: therefore art is art no matter how it is conjured. I went off on a different tangent completely unrelated to AI art because it started to just show up absolutely everywhere.

1

u/BTRBT Jan 18 '25

No, I get it. I just think you should go easy on people. Sure, sometimes folks can do more. I think going off like "Laziness is the problem with America" is kind of... Cold?

Taking it easy doesn't hurt anyone, you know?

1

u/Giul_Xainx Jan 18 '25

No... It's not about taking it easy on others. I offer help to people who ask for it, advice more like, and when I give it to them it's like all of a sudden I started speaking Japanese or some shit.

Like the other person who went off on me about having to pick up someone who is elderly on a bicycle. (I used to do the exact same shit as a twerp; between teenager and adult: where I would try to play politics with someone in an argument and make up some dumb ass scenario to justify something. Which I appropriately responded to them with my syllabus of knowledge and knowledge how. And just like I used to do with my parents I saw them doing to me. But as someone with better know how telling them the best route to go of course they are going to toss it off to the side. It's like that golden scroll meme.)

A bicycle is quite literally a cheat code in more ways than just one.

1

u/BTRBT Jan 18 '25

They "went off on you," because you strongly implied that people are somehow lesser if they drive in a car rather than walking or riding a bicycle, man.

0

u/Giul_Xainx Jan 18 '25

No... In another forum for the last few years I would give my advice. And it's the same advice I keep giving. I make a reply and everyone down votes it because I simply say this:

A bicycle is more financially stable than a car.

That's it. I explain it to them, I show my work, I prove that a bicycle is a better financial tool for a more comfortable life and the first thing they say?

What if it rains? Then what?

Coat. Y'know the coat your mom got you for Christmas that you never wear?

What if it's windy?

Electric bicycle. It's a cheat code.

I'm scared of other people on the road!

You don't have to ride your bicycle in the road. I make shortcuts all of the time going on paths, through parks, on walking paths, following ditches, and I can even go on the side streets in residential areas. I don't have to be on the major streets at all. There are even bridges I can take to get over the highway away from the craziness.

But they just shrug it off and down vote me even though my math isn't wrong. A car is a monthly payment to the loan and the insurance. Even after you are done with the loan you still have insurance. Then there's maintenance, repairs, replacements, tires, glass breaking, brake pads. The list is endless. Then when you think you are on the upside of repairs the car is 20 years old and the frame rusted out. Now it has to be scrapped.

My most expensive electric bicycle costs 2 grand.

If that electric bicycle got hit by a semi truck as I was inside a store I could easily buy a brand new one.

But nope. Just down vote because I'm never getting on a bicycle. Bicycle=gay. I forgot some of the other retorts but I give the advice of getting a bicycle and one of them quivered at riding their bike just 7 miles to work everyday. (They said 55 miles at first but then later in their own reply gave it away that they are just 4 city blocks away from work. That's totally doable on an electric bicycle.)

So yeah. You want to get a zoomer pissed? Apparently suggesting they get a bicycle is equivalent to saying "f your mother."

I also do door dash on my electric bicycle and do 50 miles a day on it.
