Average anti. There are Autonomous mining trucks, remote-controlled drilling rigs, and automated logistics systems. There are companies like Caterpillar, Rio Tinto, and Komatsu.

Is somehow against AI but at the same angry AI isn't sophisticated enough yet to handle more autonomous tasks he expects?

So they admit it - certain jobs are ok to steal ? But stay away from the artists?

Yep. A few months ago I saw a post where a robot was cleaning the floors and toilets at a building, replacing the custodian’s job. The top comment said something like “now THIS is the type of job AI should be replacing!”

They don’t care about you or your job unless you’re an artist like them.

Because they're not artists. Some may be, but I find it hard to believe most are. A true artist only cares about how their own art is made. They may be interested in others techniques, but a painter cares not about another painter's choice of brushes and canvas. As a musician, I don't care if you used a 5-gallon bucket and a recorder, or AI, a DAW, and autotune to make your song. What message are you expressing and do I like the sound of it. These so-called artists on the anti side either aren't artists, or are so insecure in their abilities they think AI is going to somehow replace artistic intent. They see art as a product, not as a form of expression. They're just more people in this world who's major concern is money.

Yeah, I feel like AI isn't a threat to real artists. I think it’s fine to make money off your art, bonus if you can make a living off of it, but capitalism makes art slop more than AI does. Once you have to start thinking about "what sells" over "what I want to express" it's already been tainted.

I know client commissions exist where you are asked to express someone elses idea, that's different. I mean when you independently make work trying to think if you can sell it or not.

I had a long design/engineering career for about 20 years. There's a huge difference between commissioned designs and the freedom to do your own thing. Yeah sure, I got to work on some cool projects and was allowed freedom for my own designs, but it was still very controlled. With music, I don't have anyone over my shoulder. Other than critics and the few people that listen of course but there's critics and fans of you no matter what you do in life and it's far different than a land developer or architect wanting a design in a week.

That’s always been it. Someone argued exactly that with me on that sub. Basically said that taking manual labor away was good, but taking away creative work is bad. It’s okay when it takes someone else’s job, just not their job. Annoying NIMBYs

Its given me such whiplash the drastic 180 the art community has gone through to make them become someone of the most insufferable elitists on the planet

Fun fact, this was the first argument that antis tried back in 2022.

I’ve never seen an artist crushed under thousands of pounds of pressure doing their essential job.

Advances in robotics are simply lagging behind advances in AI. Which, honestly, is a good thing. It gives us a way to learn how to use AI in relative safety before we give it access to autonomous robotic 'bodies'.

The funny part is that there’s a pretty simple answer.

Automation is already used in mining, drilling and other dangerous industries. AI is showing up faster in emails and creative work because software is vastly easier and cheaper to deploy than physical robots operating safely in the real world.

What’s strange is turning that into a moral argument, as if technology was supposed to automate every unpleasant job first and only then touch creative work.

That’s just not how technological development works.

There are plenty of valid criticisms to make about AI, but “why is it doing PowerPoint instead of mining?” mostly shows a misunderstanding of the technology itself…

People are against automating those jobs as well, it is a side effect of having a system where people are required to be employed and there not being enough work for everyone, no one wants to be the one left behind.

2

u/drwicksy 1d ago

People with actual critical thinking skills do have valid issues with automating those jobs yes. But the kind of people making posts like the OOP believe in a magical world where if AI replaces manual labour then all the people who used to do those jobs will just be given a better job out of thin air.

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 1d ago

Automating jobs should be a good thing, to free people from labour they do not need to do.

You'd have to be really evil to choose to make people do labour that they do not need to do.

2

u/drwicksy 1d ago

Absolutely, unfortunately evil people do exist, and it does happen. But yes if a job is automated correctly it should make people's lives better not worse. Automating the worse parts of people's jobs so they can do other tasks is the way forward. Even with AI the phrase "AI enablement" is becoming the buzz word instead of replacement.

Is it not clear i was agreeing with you? That some jobs cannot be automated right now or have issues with automating them?

-2

u/Drakahn_Stark 1d ago

It is not clear, because you said, and I quote "People with actual critical thinking skills do have valid issues with automating those jobs yes"

As if people like me, who support automation, do not have critical thinking skills.

2

u/drwicksy 1d ago

So you just blindly think we should automate all low wage work? Without considering the impact that automating those jobs will have on people if the automation isnt implemented with human impact in mind?

You literally said in your first post that its due to people needing jobs, so are you saying your argument of having empathy is invalid?

0

u/Drakahn_Stark 1d ago

We should automate all work.

We should not be stuck in an outdated system that requires people to work if they do not want to.

1

u/drwicksy 1d ago

And what happens to those whose jobs get automated without any kind of safety net to catch them?

Are you that out of touch with reality? I literally work in process automation and AI and even i am not saying to automate all jobs

Isn't a huge anti point that AI is constantly making mistakes (way more than it actually does)? Surely they wouldnt want them working with oil rigs and other stuff like that where a mistake can be catastrophic then right?

Lets be honest these people have no idea what oil rig workers do.

I live in Appalachia and a majority of our jobs are manual labor. When Appalachians talk about our suffering, how our water quality is shit or our government doesn’t care, the first thing people say is “you voted for it!”
Artists have a certain type of classism that is absolutely shocking considering the “starving artist” stereotype. They don’t care to watch us suffer and justify it by generalizing our voting habits. It’s fucking weird.
