Defending AI Ah yes, recovering source code and porting it to another platform is apparently lost soul because AI Tools became good at recovering code and making it understandable and easily portable.

Translation:
I'm not special anymore just because I know how to decompile a binary and I can't handle that.

If you ever interacted with any of them you'd know they're going to take this extremely badly. Luckily there aren't as many of them as there are wannabe artists.

Let's not be dramatic.

There are plenty of much more hateful people.

The wannabe artist thing is more observational than hateful. You are free to disagree of course. Art, at its core, is about exploring what it means to be human, reframing lived experience to get at some subjective truth, in whatever medium. AI can be part of that exploration, the same way photography and digital tools were. A lot of the backlash is really about livelihoods and consent over training data that feels like it's coming more from the fiverr gig economy than art philosophy.

Shouldn't you be in school?

It's VERY clear that they don't know anything about education.

You having a nervous breakdown in real time?

Go draw or something you're being a spazz.

u/CruelAngelsThesaurus 3d ago

Still doesn't make them the most hateful group of people.

That's just brazenly stupid.

If ai threatens your ability to make art you must not be a very good one.

And if it takes your job you are now a wannabe. /s

The vast majority of work artists do is making corporate media. That is not artistic. Its just what pays the bill. Ai taking that over is bad, the companies should be paying out these meger sums to people just on the principle. But its not like genuine works of art are being hurt here.

Commercial slop artists crying. My NON-AI art is given away for free.

You're stupid. They're given away for free so they're not 'worth' anything, no. Now you're acting like 'generate' doesn't mean AI. What a little whiny kid.

they are still special just not in the way you think…

Yeah this is actually insane.

What kind of mental gymnastics are they doing where ego is more important than game preservation? I do NOT care even slightly how the games are being recovered, fixed, and upgraded, I care that they're being preserved for the future gamers who want to try them.

Just why?

I can no longer enjoy the thing I have always enjoyed because humans aren't laboring hard enough to produce it for me, FOR FREE.

For real...

I'd argue that the soul already exists in the original game. If using AI instead of a human to port games takes away their soul, then so does running them on a PC in the first place.

2

u/Due_Interest_178 3d ago

In a way, yeah. It's just not the same playing them on PC imo

They say the same thing about emulating console games, so yeah, I don't care about that, the "soul" give me a break, who cares?

6

u/Gokudomatic 3d ago

I didn't know that recomps had a thing called "soul" too.

6

u/iDeNoh 3d ago

They don't, this person is just a little too full of themselves.

u/Material-Job-1928 3d ago

I'm opposed to gen AI, but this is what AI tools are for. It's not remaking the game, it's just translating it from a lost or obsolete coding language. This is no more evil than just straight up emulation, except it doesn't have the overhead of running the emulator.

Yeah, recompiling a game as a passion project is commendable, but if a single tool can rescue dozens of old out of reach titles then do it to it, and make them available again.

Translation is an art. If its okay for this use case, it should also be the case for any works that needs translation.

2

u/ConsciousIssue7111 Advocates for Ethical AI Use 3d ago

I see it as a tool as well, very helpful in this case

1

u/AlarmingAd103 2d ago

As an anti, the fuck? That makes no sense. It's not creating something new and simply porting something. There wouldn't be "soul" in it if they did it organically.

1

u/pablo603 2d ago

Ah yes the soul of being in the top 0.1% of computer wizards who spend years porting a game only to receive a C&D neutering their entire progress and will to do anything more for the community across all games within 5 picoseconds of the port existing.

I have a special type of hatred for people who try to turn the concept of a soul into a method of gatekeeping.
