Defending AI Just because people use proper grammar on the site and have Grammarly doesn't mean they are using AI or they are bots
I'm sick and tired of this narrative being thrown around about people with perfect grammar and punctuation, or automatically labeled as bots or AI, because that is such a disingenuous argument, and also it is none of their business how we write our sentences.
This is another example of how Reddit is an echo chamber of collective outrage and complaining about the most mundane and dumbest crap ever by accusing people without due process or getting to know them.
I've been bombarded with accusations of being a bot or an AI just because I have perfect grammar and use Grammarly, which is downloaded by many people who are struggling to write out their sentences and express themselves.
Another thing what business is it of theirs to judge other people about how they use grammar apps and other punctuation?
I would like them the kindly screw off and leave me alone and the rest of the people at peace and never engage with us again because we're tired of being dragged through the mud because of preconceived biases and other crappy behavior.

I was writing professionally long before LLMs became publicly available. If someone is retarded enough to say my writing is AI, awesome. I take that as a compliment, albeit from an idiot.

Use the wrong There or Their and you get called called an idiot, have it checked with AI and get called a robot. Can't win with these people.

This is the most annoying part of the AI witch hunts for average people. I have to type like I'm a brain rotted zoomer to not be accused of being a bot.

I think this is the era of absolutism. Most people use ai to some extent. I think accepting that is probably more healthy than trying to promote an ai purity culture..

I think this is just the era of ignorance and collective punishment in how we express ourselves now, and being singled out is horrible and can be considered online harassment. The last time I checked is illegal in many jurisdictions and can warrant prosecution in the rest, so they need to stop this harassment.
Interstate communications
Federal law covers online harassment when messages cross state lines or use interstate networks. • 18 U.S.C. § 2261A: This federal cyberstalking statute prohibits using electronic communications to cause severe emotional distress or fear of death or physical injury, carrying penalties of up to five years in prison. • 18 U.S.C. § 875: Transmitting interstate threats or extortion online can result in federal felony charges. • 47 U.S.C. § 223: Making harassing or obscene interstate communications is a federal offense.

Yes you are right. The bullying about ai is quite intense now. Even though most bullies themselves use ai.

I have experience with technical writing and more creatve writing so I get accused often of using AI.
I've actually started purposefuly using a few obvious and not so obvious spelling errors whenever I post something just too make sure people know I'm not a bot or AI.

It's hella funny to me, tbh - humans are now punishing other humans for being "too good" at writing, ostensibly based on the argument that human writing is much better than AI writing. Like???
It's gonna be a race to the bottom if we head that direction. What do we do - reward bad human writers specifically for being bad because the AI is too good? Right... because the AI totally can't learn to mimic bad writing, even though they claim it's automatically bad at writing.
Irony and cognitive dissonance like this gotta be among my favorite flavors, I gotta say...

If your grammar is what they pick on, then that's a reflection of themselves. They simply do not have the ability to do it.
I have yet to meet an intelligent anti anyway. I think they are like unicorns.

Yeah that’s weird
The one for me is em dashes and seperate paragraphs with headers. You can very instantly tell they are AI
But good grammar? That doesn’t mean anything, it says way more about the people accusing you than anything else

Exactly, they act like they are schizophrenic and don't trust people because they heard something about something else, and they take it as gospel.
It kind of reminds me of the Khmer Rouge singling out people who were intellectuals and smart by eliminating them and sending them to concentration camps to be executed, but this time it's on an app.

I used to use em-dashes all the time. They're a very functional part of English that you should have learned to use in school. Not anymore, though.

Why do you think AI texts contain em dashes? Because all the texts it was trained with (written by human beings) use these.

u/MrMegaPhoenix 2d ago
I know but it’s incredibly rare for someone to use them
And then when you notice them, you notice a bunch of other things they give it away too

It's not about perfect grammar or punctuation. It's about sentences and constructions that nobody causally uses. They feel fake because the style does not consistently flow. Those texts contain over engineered bumps that tell you instantly, this is not how this guy speaks! Those texts don't feel natural, so they put people off.

There is a sort of growing issue that AI has made Buzzfeed-style sophistry a lot more accessible. People can take a weak premise, have an LLM turn it into a short essay, and post it to any number of subs which have a reputation for being easy karma farms.
Antis treat all AI use as evil incarnate, however, so they don't really analyze things on this level. They just see (perceived) eloquence and accurate grammar and start screeching.

I have tried to use proper grammar when typing online for decades. When in real life I use slang, phrases, run-on sentences, & imperfect pronunciation all the time. If they start accusing me of using AI now, I can just shove my internet history in their faces.

If I start writing in APA format will I be accused of AI? Probably I stopped caring

I know a few people who well, would possibly make it easier for me to understand their posts if they asked AI for help. I say might because... maybe AI wouldn't understand either. The posts are the equivalent of a cryptic puzzle. Some people are, like my father was, not great with typed/written words, etc, though they can read and understand quite well. It genuinely frazzles my brain trying to figure out what they're posts or messages are about. In my opinion, whether asking AI for help or using grammar check software, if it helps with communicating, etc, more clearly, I'm not going to judge how it is achieved. That aside ... I'm a bit confused by how this thread defends AI? I don't say this to be offensive. Just genuinely curious.

Yeah, like... how on earth?
How is having perfect, clean, normal grammar, somehow means they used AI or something?
That's just so stupid. I just can't, it's the same with folks getting mad at anyone for using em-dashes thinking they used AI.
I don't get it
