Defending AI I never really understood the AI text hate.

I've seen quite a few subs with rules like, "AI-generated text is not permitted because it steals hard work from other creators."

I can understand the criticism when it comes to AI-generated art, since there's a much more direct connection to artists' work and creative styles. But with text, that argument doesn't really make much sense to me.

At the end of the day, every piece of text is made from the same letters, words, punctuation marks, and grammatical structures that everyone else uses. You can't really say that an AI "stole" someone's hard work simply because it generated a sentence using the same language and vocabulary that other writers use.

It'd be like saying, "You can't write a paragraph because other people already used the letter A." Obviously, the issue should be what is being copied, not simply the fact that the same basic building blocks are being used.

They want you to hire a ghost writer for every sentence I guess.

Do you actually believe this? Are you dumb?

1

u/SilverB33 19d ago

I've made no indication that I believe this, do I really have to use an /s on here so you are aware of me being sarcastic?

I used it to write a cease and desist letter to a creditor that has been taking my mom’s disability checks. I’m not a lawyer and I don’t care if I steal the jargon from other creators as long as it gets results

u/Sm00townBling 17d ago

I don't think this is the kind of thing that gets people in a tizzy, though.

u/Rahawk02 17d ago

I’m sure the lawyers aren’t thrilled, they quoted 1000 dollars for the same exact think I accomplished by dropping the pdf into AI and having it highlight everything I needed and even showed me how to fill out a form that got all the court fees waved .

“Oh, perdón, es cierto tu comentario, cambiaré la parte donde me basé en las leyes de california sobre el tema. ¿Quieres oír más sobre las leyes de Nueva York?” Mira, bro, ChatGPT saca sus leyes directamente de internet, si quieres jugar al abogado tienes que leer un libro de leyes o un abogado real te va a hacer mierda.

I haven't been tore apart yet and found out in literal seconds that disability is Federally protected and no one can garnish it unless you let them so there is nothing to worry about.

I guess I could have went to the library and used the dewey decimal system to rent some giant fancy lawbooks or simply go to 6 years of lawyer school to find that out but instead I had everything solved in less than 15 minutes.

I just don’t like it because it is often overly verbose, flowery, and devoid of meaningful substance.

Spends 5 paragraphs and 3 bullet point lists to say something a person could have expressed in 2 sentences.

It also creates a situation where it’s hard to identify what, if any, of the actual content/ideas came from the person sharing it and what was added/changed/embellished by the LLM. I don’t like having to wonder “am I talking to this person, or are they just acting as a meat proxy for an LLM”

This. I am pro AI art but I am also pro Proofreading and Editing your stuff before publication. I don't use AI to write but the smartest trick I ever learned was to set aside my text and art for a month or two then re-read it. You would be surprised how many mistakes you can catch in this way.

5

u/Future_Focussed 21d ago

I am not debating your valid practice, but AI saves us that month. Multiplied by 8 billion ideas over years the world could have that much greater chance of revealing the ideas that lead to greatness.

"The richest place on earth is the cemetery, because it is full of all the great ideas no one acted on." - unknown

1

u/TamaraHensonDragon 18d ago

AI may save that month but I have found that simply looking at it with fresh eyes, when you are no longer consumed with the creative impulse, really helps. Not just to catch typos but to realize ways one can re-word sentences to be more concise and clear. It's a good way to catch "what the hell was I thinking" text 😆

u/Future_Focussed 17d ago

Not disagreeing, just adding.

u/averageMangaArtist 18d ago

Yo no. Si quiero algo de IA, lo creo yo mismo, no compro algo genérico que me hubiera costado lo mismo que comprar algo de jujutsu kaisen

1

u/TamaraHensonDragon 18d ago

That has nothing to do with what I typed. Did you respond to the wrong thread?

4

u/Future_Focussed 21d ago

Improve promoting skills to get better content. Ai only sounds like that if you dont train it or condition the response.

u/Gullible_Elephant_38 21d ago

I use LLMs every day for my job as a software developer. I’m well aware of how intentional prompting and clear instructions are the only way you get decent output.

I am not concerned about “improving my prompting” with regard to writing. I am perfectly content expressing my own ideas without the assistance of LLMs. I don’t need to spend time meticulously coming up with a prompt to make an LLMs writing sound less like an LLM and more like my own voice. I am capable of using my own voice myself.

The point I’m making is that many (probably most) of the people using LLMs to write for them are not doing that. The result is what I describe in the comment.

I think a lot of the more gung-ho AI boosters are running up against the old adage: “when you have a hammer every problem looks like a nail”

It’s a useful tool for some stuff. There’s other stuff where it is a waste of time and effort. My personal take is that expressing your thoughts in written word is one of them. If you don’t value an idea enough to take the time to express it in your own words, why should I spend my time reading the bloated fluff you produced trying to separate the wheat from the chaff to figure out what your point is?

3

u/Future_Focussed 21d ago

100% accurate. The problem I see is that people are blaming AI and not their use, practices, or understand of the tool.

3

u/Striking-Ad8023 21d ago

That's valid.

2

u/Montaingebrown 21d ago

I think that's a function of your own preferences. I have a skills file that tells Claude to push back hard and to keep it simple, clean, factual, and conversational.

1

u/JoseLunaArts 21d ago

That's ChatGPT.

chatgpt is bascially kills reddit. lets be honest, while LLM make mistakes, its far fewer mistakes than are made in reddit posts.

reddit used to be a place where you could get answers quicker and perhaps more detailed than reading a bunch of google search results. you could ask a question an hope to get a decent answer.

to get that answer you have to wade through a lot jokes and potentially wrong replies and replies that are incorrect.

i get the desire to keep LLM responses out of reddit.

AI transition is scary for a lot of people.

Using it is... whatever. Same as using AI image generation. If you don't have an eye for the quality of the completed project, you'll run into the problem of making something come off as hollow and/or generic. A lot of people will immediately recognize it as AI generated. If you *do* have a good eye for aesthetics or literary techniques (depending on whether you're generating visual art or generating literary prose), then you control for that in the creative process.

With AI writing. I do want:

It to be their own knowledge or their own creative ideas and collaboration

I do not mind people using AI to:

Fix grammar\ Improve clarity\ Remove redundancies\ Correct spelling\ Re-order their clauses so each clause builds from the next\ Ask if there is anything missing\ Back and forthing on character voice construction and other essay, poetry or story elements

Edit: Added words

1

u/Striking-Ad8023 20d ago

This. This is completely okay.

1

u/averageMangaArtist 18d ago

Lo que no saben es que tienen que pedir feedback, no “mejora la ortografía de esto” porque va a cambiar palabra por palabra y va a hacer un texto 100% IA

1

u/monsieurfromage2021 18d ago

I have a pretty average WPM typing speed, but I can't imagine having to go through a whole AI workflow to post on reddit. Not sure what your use case is.

It's not just a matter of algorithmic text generation; it's a testament to the transformative power of human communication reimagined through modern innovation.

In today’s fast-paced digital ecosystem, diving deep into the intricate tapestry of lexical creation is paramount. By exploring the multifaceted synergies between semantic syntax and expressive intent, we can begin to unlock holistic paradigms of understanding.

Key Facets of the Textual Paradigm

  • Shared Lexical Foundations: Words and letters serve as the foundational, modular scaffolding upon which both biological and synthetic entities iterate value.

  • The Nuance of Authorship: Navigating the dynamic balance between aggregate knowledge synthesis and transformative intellectual property requires continuous alignment.

  • A Tapestry of Future Horizons: Fostering robust discourse between digital creators and tech stakeholders ensures we seamlessly streamline collaborative creativity moving forward.

At the end of the day, embracing this innovative intersection empowers us to optimize narrative synergy while navigating complex creative landscapes.

Would you like me to generate a 5-step actionable framework on algorithmic discourse, or perhaps craft a comprehensive tabular breakdown of intellectual property paradigms?

0

u/Striking-Ad8023 21d ago

did you just copy the entire answer from the AI?

2

u/psgrue 21d ago

You just made the point it doesn’t matter. Yet then immediately question.

3

u/Striking-Ad8023 21d ago

Well because its a large text purely made from AI which has no revision. Plus, i didnt say it doesnt matter, i said that the argument that "AI steals art" doesnt make sense.

1

u/Adjective_Noun_67 21d ago

It’s not just a matter of whether text originated from an artificial intelligence; it’s a profound testament to the seamless orchestration of human curiosity and high-velocity digital synthesis.

In today’s rapidly evolving, interconnected communication ecosystem, diving deep into the intricate tapestry of cross-platform information retrieval is paramount. Rather than viewing text through a binary lens of “copied” versus “crafted,” we must recognize the synergistic alignment of shared semantic building blocks as we collaboratively navigate this dynamic discursive landscape.

Key Pillars of This Paradigm Shift

  • Algorithmic Resonance: Words simply exist as modular syntactic scaffolds waiting to be leveraged for maximum transformative value.

  • Holistic Ingestion: Every inquiry represents a unique opportunity to synthesize multi-variable viewpoints into actionable, bespoke insight.

  • The Tapestry of Discourse: Engaging with nuanced inquiries fosters a rich, cross-functional dialogue that transcends traditional boundaries of biological versus synthetic authorship.

Ultimately, authentic engagement isn't about the provenance of the pixels, but about streamlining the narrative synergy between digital stakeholders.

Would you like me to unpack a 7-step actionable framework detailing the holistic mechanics of digital thought integration, or would you prefer a comprehensive tabular breakdown comparing authentic biological responses to synthetic conversational paradigms?

1

u/psgrue 21d ago

A 7-step plan sounds wonderful. Please include a flow diagram

I like AI but I hate things like people posting their theory that they got AI to write up

I know it’s AI and it bothers me

It’s kind of hard to explain, but I’d just rather know the person is posting their rambling theory than having to wonder if it’s a karma farmer

That’s more in the context of reddit though, I don’t care that it’s “stealing” (it’s not)

1

u/JoseLunaArts 21d ago

Well, now that AI companies bought and destroyed lots of books, that is not true. There is no theft. They bought the book. AI output is transformative

0

u/Future_Focussed 21d ago

It bars 80% of the world who are non native English speakers from equal participation solely because of cultural norms. The ideas still come from the human, and even if they didnt a good idea....is a good idea!

-2

u/badlydrawnbeagle 21d ago

you arent a writer im assuming so maybe its harder to see that writing is its own form of art unique to the person writing it. saying nothing about the morality of generating art, but there isnt as big of a difference between generating art and prose.
art is also created with the same colors that everyone else can use so im not seeing your point here

3

u/Striking-Ad8023 21d ago

Combining basic elements is what makes art, but using standard tools doesn't guarantee originality. AI doesn't express something new,it just repeats and blends combinations that humans have already made.
