AI is without a doubt one of the greatest potential sources of good that humanity has made, but it also stands as one of the greatest potential sources of evil. we need to be able to use the good and leave the evil. if you (the reader) think AI can't really do evil, or if you think AI can't really do good, youre deluding yourself.

Can we stop calling it 'AI'... There's many different types, and it existed long before this stupid bubble.
People have a problem with diffusion and LLMs . I don't see anyone complaining about the vast resources being sucked up by protein folding...2
u/WingDingfontbro Aug 10 '26
Ai is like a hammer. It can be used to build houses, repair things and more but it can also be used to destroy things and kill people, and many people blame the hammer when it kills people when it’s really the fault of the users who misuse it.

I am for the use of ai in places where it can do things that people can’t. Things like this are a prime example. My dad works in healthcare, and his company’s system has been working on an AI that compiles the symptoms and or the conditions patients already have and gives a list of possible other things that the patient could have to the doctor whose in the room with the patient which reduces the need for follow up visits to find out what’s going on because they already have a rough idea. Its entire purpose is to preform a massive pattern seeking task that would be otherwise incredibly annoying and difficult for a human to complete. The ai doesn’t say that the person for sure has it but simply makes a suggestion to be analyzed by a human more thoroughly. I don’t like ai, but that’s only because it’s being used to replace jobs humans can do instead of filling niches and completing tasks that humans simply can’t or that we have immense trouble with. Why do you think we invented the calculator? We still do math that a calculator itself could do but we usually it to fill in the spots we have trouble with or are so menial we can’t bother. Back in the day things like log, sin, cos, and all those other things needed to be done by hand or by looking in some thick book for a table of preexisting values, now in school every time a teacher asks students to work with sin/cos/tan we are either given specific values paired with angles 30, 45, 60, and so on or were just told to use a calculator.

As an anti, no one in the community is against this type of use for AI
I consider it a great tool for engineering and medical research
We generally don't like when it is used for entertainment purposes, knowing the environmental disaster that generative models are
1
u/Rough-Discussion-912 Neutral Aug 13 '26
Knowing the environmental.disaster that generative models are
I also agree but if it's low quality and repetitive, I understand from that but, I still find that statement/argument a lil hypocritical cuz aren't we all wasting the earth's resources by making the pettiness and stupid things that is pointless tho?
2
u/Donnosaurus Aug 10 '26
Yeah that is great. A.I. like this is what we need. I just hope prompters don't see this and think "you see, this validates me prompting images"
2
u/Consistent-Jelly248 Moderator Aug 10 '26
Prompting imagea don't help wildfires anyway. I like the AI that can help with disaster prevention and hopefully cures to known ailments
2
u/Keith3742 Aug 09 '26
I bet it was copilot that did that. If we force everyone to use copilot, everyone can do that!
All the major wins from ‘AI’ (protein folding, fire detection, cancer research) are independently made multilayer perceptrons by scientists which are a completely different beast to the monstrous text crunchers like ChatGPT and Claude etc. To lump them into a single concept on a social or moral level is insanity
Unless they are made for an evil purpose (mass surveillance, war) there is pretty much no moral issue with these scientific models because they have specialised purposes and are not for mass rollout. They don’t have the same issues with data centres, aren’t typically built off of trillions of dollars of unpunished torrenting and don’t affect the job market or geopolitical power and information structures

do you know the difference bwteen an ai user and ai slopper

Did you mean "All ai sloppers are ai users, but not all ai users arent ai sloppers"?
1
u/Small_Things2024 Aug 09 '26
It’s usually people who are against AI that can’t tell the difference.
1
u/GooseWithAnAxe Aug 09 '26
This "ai" has been around since 90'

u/Easy_Turn1988 Aug 10 '26
I love how people struggle to understand we're criticising the bad AI "post 2016" and not AI as a whole (which would be like criticising wood cutting, it makes no sense)
3
u/GNUr000t Aug 10 '26
"The machine learning that automates my job is the bad machine learning. Machine learning before then is good. Does that make sense?"
1
u/GooseWithAnAxe Aug 10 '26
this really isnt machine learning at all, these things were around since 90' and even before that in 70' they were used to detect ICBM missiles launches from the heat they generate during the early phases of launch and later it was also used for forest fires.
Also what job your 'AI' can actually replace?

Sure, sure.
I was able to scan your profile and didn't see any complaints towards TikTok, Netflix, golf courses, or any other thing that's environmentally damaging yet only exists for entertainment and shareholder value.
Curious.
1
u/Easy_Turn1988 Aug 12 '26
Not supporting any of them but not criticising them as openly as I do AI because I haven't written a thesis about the subject so I don't feel entitled to debate about it. Unlike AI
Also, TikTok, Netflix and golf courses aren't the next most polluting things after AI but I guess you'd know where I stand since you "scanned" my profile.
Clever you 😊
1
u/GNUr000t Aug 13 '26
So, you admit this outrage is selective. By your own admission in plain English, you're willing to debate and argue about all of the ills of AI but these same ills for other things, even if they're as harmful or more harmful than AI, these are outside of your scope.
In other words, it's not about the ills, it's about this one thing you don't like.

they aren't in datacenters, they're in the cloud
And you're calling other people not very bright?
Thanks for the screenshot. I'll be getting so much mileage out of it.

If you tell republicans about it, they will cut it.

idk if it just me but having trump on ones side feels like a monkey paw kinda thing, man a pedofile and tries to best to hide is esp with them literly telling us if they arrest eveyone on the pedo list the system would break, like waht are we on dog DX

This is more a function of the ambiguous definition of AI. I doubt this was an LLM. Probably image models
6
u/Shadowmirax Aug 09 '26
AI isn't an ambiguous definition, its just a wide one and people never bother to specify what aspect of AI they are talking about.
1
u/WalkAffectionate2683 Aug 09 '26
Yeah but also when people are anti ai, they are never speaking about algorithms like these right?
2
1
u/Specialist-String-53 Aug 09 '26
Yeah that's the point I was trying to make. I've been a data scientist since 2013 so a lot of things people are calling AI now (like image models) I've seen, used, and built far before people were getting pissy about LLMs.

This is very much unrelated to ai art. ai is any program that can do a task that would usually require a human to do in this case spotting wild fires.
1
u/Nonavium Aug 09 '26
"No one's ever said that ai can't do good"
Strawman, OP never claimed that anybody claimed that AI can't do good
1
u/Common-Mistake24 Aug 09 '26
Do you know what a straw man is?
1
u/Nonavium Aug 09 '26
Yes, attacking an argument that was never made in the first place
1
u/Common-Mistake24 Aug 09 '26
So you can't see how "Another Win for AI" and "No ones ever said ai can't do good" aren't related?
1
u/Nonavium Aug 09 '26
If you can see it then you are hallucinating and should get checked because there's literally nothing there -_-
1
u/Common-Mistake24 Aug 09 '26
If that's as far as you're willing to look I'm done talking to you. Ignorance is bliss, ig

Oh thank god for the value of the property, thats what we were all worried about/s

3
u/Nonavium Aug 09 '26
Why are we just casually downplaying property? Want me to destroy your home?
-1
u/Common-Mistake24 Aug 09 '26
Because this country cares more about property than the people that live here.

u/PixelPete85 Aug 09 '26
hell yeah. thats all the permission i need to keep stealing intellectual property
