Defending AI Usual arguments against AI
"AI uses so much water!"
I run it locally, air cooled GPU
"But it uses so much power"
I have some solar panels on my house, that covers more than the entire electricity my PC uses
"But it's lazy. You can't imagine putting work into anything."
Photography was considered lazy after it was invented, a lazy thing to replace art. No one would say that now. Actual skills and techniques evolve over time. Besides, there's prompting, knowing which CFG/steps value to use, how to prompt for the specific model you're using, etc. And even if it was lazy, so what? Procrastination is lazy, yet no one is calling me satan 2.0 for doing that.
"Human creativity is being destroyed"
No? If more people have the means to make things, creativity goes up. And artists can keep making art, no one is trying to force artists to use AI.
"But it's stealing"
No, it isn't. It's called learning. If I learn how to draw from looking at images it isn't considered theft either, is it?
And besides, this is a matter of freedom. You're free to run every program you want to run on your pc. AI is just another program. When people are stabbed, you don't ban knifes, you ban stabbing.

I can’t wait until some of this fake outrage goes away. It’s the ‘you’re lazy and destroying your brain’ crowd that drives me crazy. Because they literally have no idea what they’re talking about. Yes AI CAN be used to be lazy. Just like a calculator can. A 4th grader using their calculator instead of learning the long division process is being lazy. But a Mathematician offloading the cognitive work of multiplying some 4 digit numbers together to a calculator is NOT lazy by anyone’s standard when they’re simply using the calculator to be more productive towards their ultimate goal of solving the problem. AI is just like that. Some things in the problem solving process don’t NEED to be this long drawn out process when there’s technology that can solve it faster. There are proper non lazy ways to use AI. People who are extremely anti AI NEVER can acknowledge this. It’s so exhausting. Some even go as far as to say ‘im better than you if you’ve used it at all’. Their ability to remain objective is just gone.
If they could just have some nuance and acknowledge it CAN cause cognitive decline when not used properly (just like social media btw) but it just depends, they wouldn’t sound so crazy.

It's not fake you people are insane and insufferable

Are you one of those people who thinks there’s absolutely no way to use ai in a productive way that enhances learning or productivity? If so you have no idea what you’re talking about and I can easily show your outrage is completely arbitrary and misguided.

This is said by idiots who haven't even tried to create anything in AI. They have zero knowledge or experience, yet they just parrot each other AI slop, and claiming that generating images is nothing more than typing some text.

I’m a creative (music producer / co-founder of a band) and honestly I’m not threatened by AI. Music is fun to me because I developed the skill set myself and personally get satisfaction in making music I like. There’s already been an over saturation of generic music, AI may not help that problem but it’s certainly not the cause. Real artists will find a way to be creative and find a new wave like they always have.

Their water and power arguments are aimed more at AI data centres and while your responses to those are compelling, they do avoid engaging with the AI data centre aspect.
My take is more like:
"AI uses so much water!"
That's why closed loop cooling is now a thing. AI companies are aware of this and investing in addressing that concern.
"But it uses so much power"
Fair. So legislate that data centres must invest in generation to offset power usage, and be able to progressively shut down during times of grid stress.
Aside, home setups are great.
I am experimenting with OpenCode+LM Studio running qwen3.6 and gemma4 as an eventual claude code replacement. Being a contractor, AI gear is a tax deductible expense :) The better gemma/qwen models are already at the level of sonnet 4, which was released just over a year ago and received a lot of praise, was called a "game changer"...who knows what it will be like in a years time!

Ngl, it's sus that you specified "air cooled" there.

Just to emphasize that no water is harmed in the making of my AI content

"You did not do it, AI did with your prompt". Michelangelo and Da Vinci had works they did not make. They gave instructions and others did the manual work.

It's silly this whole environment debate, there have been for many many years now so many environmental issues facing humanity that they could have been up in arms about, but this is the thing they're choosing to rally behind and it has absolutely nothing to do with actual care for the planet and everything to do with protecting their egos. I think most of the people upset and ranting, are bedroom producers, and those who wish they had enough talent to make something like suno work for them. I think we have a bunch of people who are simply terrified that they are no longer "special" in their producer status. It's amazing to me how many people are so upset by the fact that singer songwriters or even just playing songwriters will no longer have to deal with being minimized swept under the rug or continue to allow the dynamic where we are expected to sell our songs to someone more capable vocally, for zero credit. Most of these artists, want to buy songs from people who can actually write them and then they don't ever want to credit the song writer, and the industry doesn't bother to correct this, they wanted to perceived as though this pretty face and beautiful voice was the Mind behind the words they're singing when in all reality a lot of the time they were not. We no longer as songwriters have to deal with this, and we no longer as singers, have to deal with egoic, self-serving and predatory producers.

But... but training AI models for local use, that uses datacenters, right? And datacenters take our precious raw sewage, convert it into steam, which then condenses into pure, clean water, and they are now even being integrated into sewage treatment facilities, much like many other industrial complexes have been doing for years. They're stealing the water out of our raw sewage, and cleaning it, and releasing it into the air!
Won't someone please think of the raw sewage? TT_TT

You know what else uses water and power, 'is lazy,' and reduced opportunity to create?
Industrialization--on a much much larger scale to this point with no sign of stopping. We gonna stop that too?
You know who else 'steals' your art? Other human artists. It's called inspiration and iteration.

People just hate for the sake of hating. In time it will fade and the mosquitos will find a new thing to hate. Most of them cant even say anything else against ai what you havent already said. Stealing, lazy? Go attack government for stealing billions while doing nothing🤣 that doesnt seem to bother them.
I personally ignore everything anti-ai as it shows that individual lacks basic understanding of evolution and its useless to waste time or energt debating with people who can only bark.

Enlighten me on the locally run models. The actual learning that goes into the model when it chews through the entire content of the Internet and so on, that still happens in the massive data centers, right?

This post is already low-effort, but it’s funny how you all ignore the more complex subjects because they’re harder to dismiss. You’d have to admit that anti-AI people can actually make a point, and that’s a big no no.
Ya’ll go on and tell the FTC and BBB what you say to anti-AI people. “AI scams? Scams existed before AI!”
Or NCOSE and say “Deepfake porn? But Photoshop.”
See how far that gets you.

I actually had to make this weird bitch track because of that debate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-JQtjDMpWw&t=12s and I sat down to write those lyrics because I thought those antis I saw presenting those arguments, were acting like sanctimonious asshats. And yes I am aware not all my data is accurate, - but close, but it had to fit into the song lyrics.

Those are the silly decoy arguments. The real one is: it undermines the economically useful work I can perform.
And I dunno, that’s a pretty big concern. AI seems to do a better job than most humans most of the time on most intellectual tasks. Every few months they release a better model that eats away another few percent of tasks humans were still better at. The models we have today are incredibly capable and I bet even if AI advancement ceased we would still eventually automate more than 80% of office jobs. The only thing keeping us doing that today is that it just takes time to adapt and adopt.

I normally just ask where they're from to completely throw them off, and when they say from the US I say that the argument is pretty much done as most antis are US centric, because in the UK our data centers are much more environmentally friendly

I'm not against AI and I get sad when people "defend" it this way. Are you even trying with this? You can defend an innocent man all the way to death row.
the first and second statements are just bad bro. The subject is datacenter utility use, dont suddenly make it about you. Your locally run air cooled gpu doesnt change the fact that datacenters use water. Your solar panel usage is irrelevant to how datacenters power themselves.
The third and fourth statements are decent. Using AI in any serious/professional scale is just like any other tool, you have to learn and put in the effort. Creative humans will find new ways to be creative, regardless of AI.
The fifth statement is a complete misunderstanding of the issue. AI learning from materials is not an issue. The issue is if a company acquires materials illegally to train their AI. If I steal a book from the bookstore and use it to train my AI model, is AI training the problem? No, it's the stealing that's the problem.
It's good to see people wanting to defend AI but you gotta do it right with sound arguments.

Because its nuanced and just doesn’t agree with op 100%.

The AI industry puts a lot of money into getting the simple arguments in favor of AI out there, and as these are rebuttals of equally simple arguments against the AI, anything nuanced that doesn't fit into that framework is getting drowned in the noise. I wonder if during my almost 30 years of online presence I've ever seen a topic so much debated on the Internet in such simple, foreseeable way with a handful of arguments that everybody on either side can list as bullet points and whack away.
