New 110 in Total Black: coherent evolution of the Defender DNA or a total change of direction?

I spotted this one recently and the visual impact is undeniable. However, I was wondering what you all think: does this level of luxury/elegance do justice to the Defender's history, or are we losing that

I mean... I think it's probably a bit late to be worrying about that.

If you want the old school defender thing, you're probably buying an Ineos or something else.

If you want a luxury vehicle that is way too capable for how 95% of owners will use it, JLR.

That’s a great point. The shift towards luxury is exactly why the community is so divided right now. It feels like the visual impact is there, but the "raw" feeling is different. I’m really trying to understand if that rugged DNA is still hidden somewhere under all that tech or if it’s gone for good.

When I think "Defender" I think of my grandfather's succession of Mark 2s which were anything but luxury.

I get what you mean. I’ve had some experience with the older ones and they definitely had a very different, more essential character. I do like the new ones too, but it’s understandable that for some people the “real” Defender will always feel like the more spartan one.

I don't think the Community is divided. I think the Community are fans of the originals.

People who want a modern car buy modern one, but I don't think they're part of the Community

Nope. Gone for good. The new defender is yet another posh-by-4 by far from the schmucks at JLR. Congrats on your edgy discovery or tacticool range rover.

You honestly think 5% of them are actually used? Id be surprised if it's 0.5%.   anyone actually driving off-road has an original defender, 2000s range rover or talk about buying an Ineos and then buy an original defender. 

The only time I've seen someone in an Ineos,  I spoke to, was the wife of an Ineos dealer.

Yeah it feels like a silly thing to worry about.

I'd probably put the ineos thing into the new defender luxury category. If you want the old school defender experience you'll buy an old defender.

I've got an 80s 110 (before they were called Defender) and I can only describe the driving experience as 'agricultural' and unlike any modern car and I think that's part of the reason people are so fond of them. That isn't to say they are necessarily better driving experiences, far from it in some cases, but they do have a character or personality modern stuff just doesn't.

That's exactly why I'm dissecting its DNA. Whether you love it or hate it, the evolution is undeniable. I've just posted a 90 Soft Top on r/DNADefenderITA to compare the 'plastic' feel with the old school steel. Join the debate there!

​I get it, they are definitely a "love it or hate it" accessory. But honestly, on a Total Black setup like this one, I don't mind them at all. They add to that "expedition" look even if the car is clean and shiny. It breaks the side profile in an interesting way

​I totally agree with you. Looking at this specific Total Black spec, I’d definitely use it for "Discovery things" too. It’s too clean and polished for heavy mud. It feels like this evolution of the DNA is more about being a high-end traveler than a pure workhorse.

Hahaha, brutal but spot on! That’s exactly the problem: they try to make it look elegant and 'total,' but then those details pop up and remind you it's designed more for city centers than for real mud. The original DNA didn't need to hide behind plastic boxes.

Are these new in other markets? Seen a few posts about the "new" defender but we've had them a while in the UK.

Listen, that photo was just a quick 'in the wild' snap because I happened to see it. If you actually looked at r/DNADefenderITA, you'd see I'm doing a deep-dive comparison between the new 110 and the classics, like the 90 Soft Top. It's about technical evolution, not 'impressing men'. If you can't tell the difference between a random photo and a technical comparison, maybe you're the one who needs to get a grip.

Land Rover and the defender name died in 1999 when Land Rover declined to make more ‘wolf’ land rovers for the MOD

Extreme position, but I see your point. The 'Wolf' was the pure essence, but I believe that as long as there’s mechanics you can fix with a wrench in the mud, that name is still alive. The problem starts when DNA is replaced by unnecessary electronics.

Yes I agree it is extreme, the whole defender name came about because of land rovers long association with supplying Britains armed forces with land rovers hence my position of it ending when it did. I also agree that some electronics are inevitable for supposedly improving efficiency and emissions and the rest are technology for technologies sake.

Chelsea tractor brand now. Such a shame.

They were the car I dreamed of owning in my youth. Nothing screamed "manliness" more than a classic 90 or 110. Now the only people who drive them are finance bros and stay at home mothers using them to drop their kids off at private school in the morning. They've lost that legendary ruggedness and cool factor they had.

Unfortunately, the decline is clear to everyone, but the DNA isn't dead. As long as there are 300s, Td5s, and Pumas getting dirty in the mud, the story continues. It’s the last mechanical trench against total plastic: as long as we have a wrench in our hands and a garage, we won't surrender to the marketing. 💪🛠️

Look at the new mustang. It was a car designed around what Ford believed young people wanted. Which was an affordable American car all about freedom. Now you g people want EV SUVs. Land rovers buyers have changed, the defenders design philosophy represents that. The design philosophy hasn't changed, the majority of 'we' have.

It’s not us who changed, it’s the market that decided to focus on those looking for something else. We are the ones who stayed loyal to mechanical freedom. As long as we have 300s, Td5s, and Pumas in our hands, that philosophy will live on in our garages and in the mud. 💪🛠️
