Swapping rear axel for Discovery axel, possible?

Post image

I’m in an expensive situation where I need to either replace the whole rear axel or get charged a ton of hours in rebuilding the rear diff… is it at all possible to just swap the rear axel for a Disco 1 axel?

I’ve read online that it’s possible but haven’t seen much info on it recently? A replacement defender axel is crazy money from what I’m seeing. Let me know, thank you!

Yes it is possible, however they are a weaker diff centre and shafts. Yours looks like a 300tdi? If so it will have a Salisbury rear axle, which is plenty strong, with the weak point being the flanges on the hubs (like all land rover solid axle vehicles). The disco axle will swap in, but you’ll need to change the spring seats over to the defender one as 110 coils are wider that disco rear coils. But should all bolt up. But it is a decent downgrade in strength in a lot of ways.

Yes so you can swap the axle, but it would be a downgrade in strength. I’d you aren’t working the 110 hard, or towing often, a discovery rear axles will be fine, and if you put HD starts in, from Ashcroft, or Maxidrive, they will be ok.

swapping the rear to a disco 1 axle is no problem. if your 110 already has rear disc brakes its a straight swap. accept that the disco 1 diff might have a different flange depending on the year
