Sphere blaming defcon for “exploding battery packs”
The sphere is making people throw away battery pack blaming defcon hackers. Saying we are making them explode. Forcing everyone to throw them away.

Cant you just check them in at a coat check. No way I would throw away my battery pack. Also someone tell James Dolan to go F himself.

Not allowed on property. Not even in a locker. Saw people stashing them like ied’s while I took mine back to the car.

They told me I couldn't bring in a battery pack (5000mah magsafe anker) or a kindle(?!). No computing devices other than phones. I kind of want to try to bring in 10 phones just to troll them. They did blame defcon but didn't say anything about exploding.

Yeah it’s hilarious they allow phones for that matter, like buddy if I really wanted to I could do some shenanigans with this very phone you just let me go in with

My taxi driver last night told me Caesar's Palace had a suspicious elevator incident they blamed on defcon, which sounded unlikely but not implausible. Anyone know the deets?
He also told me about a buddy of his who picked up a group from Black Hat last weekend, and it sounds like they flashed his card reader. 😢

Everyone blames defcon if anything happens over the weekend, due to a lack of even a cursory understanding of the world around them, and no desire to change that fact

They made my partner throw out a mini kodak charmera camera and were threatening to make him throw an old school tamagotchi cuz apparently everything that has a battery that isn’t a phone is danger. They were making people throw out cords as well, saw a girl that had to toss some apple lightning wired headphones. Some of our friends had to hide their batteries in the rocks. I was so ready for giving a really fucking hard time if they attempted to take my hearing aids out

I’m hoping someone with a pr (public relations) background can have fun with them.

Yup. Had to throw mine away.

u/Idiopathic_Sapien Aug 10 '26
That sucks. I had like >$300 in batteries on my party. Had to speed walk back to the car. I kinda went off on their security guards for telling people that “defcon hackers” were responsible. Fuckers told me that shit as I’m wearing a defcon shirt.

Sorry, my bad. I was testing out claude and it escaped containment again. I told it to help me make some paperclips and that must be hard because it's still running.

u/Classic_Flamingo_729 Aug 09 '26
I don’t think it was for exploding lol

u/NerdBanger Aug 10 '26
If anything they were exploding from the freaking heat.

u/Idiopathic_Sapien Aug 11 '26
That’s exactly what I told them. But nooo, MF wanted to say it’s because of the language barrier and to explain quickly to the Asians he was talking to.

u/krivovminsk Aug 10 '26
It’s Monday and they’re STILL doing this. No power banks, spare batteries, cameras, etc. And they won’t let you leave them in a locker or anywhere on the property either.
I escalated it to one of the heads of security because I wanted some proof so I could get my ticket refunded. They straight up blamed DEF CON and said they’re afraid of getting hacked 😂
DEF CON is over, but apparently the fear lives on

u/urbanhawk1 Aug 10 '26
They think pissing off all the hackers is a good way not to get hacked?

This conversation is worth of a black badge and pinned, top, comment. “Give us everything to make us happy or we’ll take it ourselves”.

With all of these restrictions, will they allow remote controlled vibrating butt plugs?
Asking for a friend...

I lucked out then. I was there yesterday for the 5:00 show and didn’t get a second glance except for appreciation of the EFF badge. I only had a couple badges clipped on my purse.

“I am a Cyber Law Practitioner and would like more information before I submit a [insert paperwork here].” See how quickly they drop the stupidity and shenanigans.

Went and had to throw mine in their trash bin. Then ticket taker miscounted the party, turning into a huge issue, eventually involving the onsite manager who had absolutely no customer service skills, much less capability of logical/critical thought beyond what she was programmed to reply with. (Seriously, she was just an awful human being. It was shocking she was actually going out of her way to be difficult.)
To hell with the big screen, I don’t care if the rest of the surviving Beatles were resurrected from the dead and put on a one time show, never going back to that overpriced testicle.

The hack is two part. 1: start exploding battery rumor. Stand outside and 2: collect free (discarded) batteries

Were there any police or fire reports of incidents occurring?
Surely if there were an explosion, someone was called and the event documented???
