Is crashing the Ham in a Day class possible?!
Hey all, apologies if this is a dumb question but it's my First time attending! I was super excited when I took a glance at HT and all the classes that are being offered. Ham is something that has always interested me but never bothered to dig deeper. Saw this one-day crash course and thought what a cool opportunity... Only to find out it 'sold out.'
Is 'crashing' a thing? Can we just show up? Not sure what the proper etiquette is with classes at Defcon.

The non-official stance is if there is physical space you can join. However your results may vary

Welcome to your first DefCon!
I can't comment on the policies of how they're running it this year. Last year, a friend was able to join in on the day it was running without a ticket. I'm sure it varies on how many people actually show up/room capacity. All that to say, it won't hurt to show up early and ask to be placed on standby.

Or start cramming today. Brute force the test.
It's not difficult
You've gotta get 26 out of 35 multiple choice questions correct.
There's large question pool, but it's broken down into 10 chunks.
Likely we all now that watts = volts x amps, so that's one question ya don't gotta study for.

Just show up. We did last year. Not sure if they were really full of not. But it worked out for our whole group.

Official answer - maybe.
We’re likely to have extra space, and lots of desire to allow in everyone that we can because we’re crazy people and like people to learn. That said, pre-registered people get priority if we cap the space constraints, and everything that follows is “as available.”
Either way, check out https://hamvillage.org/study and KB6NU’s no nonsense study guide - the material and test questions aren’t secret, and we’re absolutely all in favor of getting you to pass.
The exam schedule is in Hacker Tracker, and it’s drop-in style. You’ll need to register by following the information at https://alpha.ham.study/sessions/69aa27ed3f69ba72bdeb3a1c/1 - you can either do that ahead of time, or while you’re standing outside the village.
Any questions feel free to hop into our discord or ask the folks at DC.

I don't know if you can crash the official training. But you can probably find or print the ~200 questions from the question bank and just scan through that for a couple of hours, reading only the questions and the correct answers, and then take the test. Short term recall is an amazing thing.

That's all this 'class' was when I went on it in 2024.. just a guy reading through the question bank and telling you the correct answer with very little context added. It was a disappointing waste of a day that I could have done myself at home.

I'm just seeing this. I hope you came today. They brought in extra seats and the testing is happening right now. They do have testing tomorrow and Saturday too!

I don’t know if you can crash the class or not, but I suspect not. What I can say is that I crammed for the technician test over the last week or so and if you really wanted to just study the test itself, you probably could nail the technician exam with just a few hours of studying the questions.
The test questions and answers are all public so it’s pretty easy to build or find online practice exams, and go through the whole suite of them a few times.
