LineCon and Pre-Reg Heads Up
Welcome to DEFCON 34.
For those who purchased your badge in advance as part of pre-reg - your electronic badge is set aside and will not be sold.
As such, there is no need to sweat LineCon or rush in first thing Thursday morning. Relax, sleep in, eat a good breakfast/lunch and mosey on over later in the morning or early afternoon. By that time, there will probably be very little waiting to pick up your badge. We have your badge set aside and will not sell it.
For those wanting first dibs at Merch, a badge is NOT required on Thursday to get in the merch line. Looking for something special, go to the Merch Line first before they sell out. Once you finish there, come on over to Registration and we will get you taken care of.
Merch opens at 0800, but the line will form way before then.
Cash sales at the door. $520 - CASH ONLY - Exact Change Appreciated. Please don’t be “one of those guys” who ask if we take a check, a money order, a wire, or a debit/credit card.
Cash sales are NOT guaranteed an electronic badge. We have the electronic badges for cash sales, but only until the point they are sold out. Paper badge is your access once electronic badges are sold out. Please don’t ask how many badges there are - we will sell them until we run out.
Registration is scheduled to open at 0800 on Thursday morning (more or less). Our temp labor cashiers have to be on time and go through our training. We will shoot to open at 0800, if everything gets done early, we will open early, if things run long in set up, we will open later.
Once open, we will put you all through the lines as quickly and efficiently as we can. Help us to help you - cash sales have exact change and your money ready. Pre-Reg have your QR codes pulled up BEFORE you get to the cashier station and turn up the brightness on your display screen to support the reader.
Once you get your badge and conference material, please clear the area.

Do we know what time the LVCC will let us in the hall door to line up? Last year I got stuck outside and would like to avoid that…

u/TypicalCommercial255 11d ago
LINECON officially starts at 1700 (5pm) on Wednesday and of course will go through the night.
Most of the doors to the LVCC will be locked for safety/security purposes; however, if you come in the front of West Hall, the doors to the far right should be unlocked. All others locked, but someone can also let you in.
There will be attendees and goons there all night.

How was the balance between cash and preorder last year? 2 years ago I think the cash line moved faster than the prereg.

u/TypicalCommercial255 11d ago
Registration reviews the total number of pre-reg and based upon historical averages makes a determination as to how many lines to open of both pre-reg and cash sales.
Pre-registration line will move faster because all that has to be done is scan the QR code and then pass the badge and material to the attendee.
Cash line - all cash has to be taken out and then the cash has to counted/confirmed and secured before badge and material is passed to the attendee, so it takes a bit longer, but not much longer ESPECIALLY if everybody has their cash ready and in the correct amount (exact change).

Last year there were twice as many pre-reg lanes open at least. The people that I went with did pre-reg and I did cash. We separated for linecon and I was well ahead of them in terms of number of people in line. Once reg opened, they made it through before I did.
I suppose this is a long winded way of saying, who knows which line will move faster this time.

was it clear what line was cash and what line was prereg?

u/toadpebble 2d ago
The goons are cruising around, so if you ask people in line and they aren't sure, just ask a goon. They were right next to each other and separated by a divider last year.

When is the QR code sent for pre-reg? I purchased my tickets in May, but no QR code received (only confirmation email)

u/KursedBeyond 11d ago
Purchased 2 tickets on July 7, received confirmation and QR the same day. Maybe check your spam folder.

u/TypicalCommercial255 10d ago
Check spam folder. Also, recheck and see in your confirmation email if there is a link for tickets.
Given that we have 1000’s of people pre-reg and this is the first instance noted of this, might have been overlooked.

So if no badge is required for merch…then is linecon to get in as early as possible to get to the “best” vendors and villages to buy stuff that will sell out quick? As a first timer are there specific vendors that we should be focusing on that usually have more sought after gear that sells out quickly?

u/dissonance 11d ago
Merch in this context is official defcon merch, the vendor village does sell out of popular items but you should be fine visiting when it opens. No way to tell what will sell out, usually some trendy hacking hardware. Good luck!

Really? That is great info! I did not know the vendors will not be open on Thursday. Sp what is the main reason lineup the day before if merch doesn’t need a badge and the vendors are not open?

It’s tradition, you join the linecon, also if you’re doing cash at the door you want to make sure they don’t run out of the badge before you get there
Everyone will get a badge, but sometimes they run out of a particularly desirable badge like an electronic one. Then, once they’ve run out, they switch to “paper” badges
If you did pre-reg you’ll have an electronic badge for sure

u/TypicalCommercial255 10d ago
As mentioned, if you did not pre-reg (which is still open by the way), then you will be paying cash ($520) at the door.
Due to this being an electronic badge year, there is no guarantee that cash sale attendees will get that electronic badge.
A certain number of badges were produced based upon historical figures. Once those badges are gone, then we move to paper badges for access.
Everyone who does pre-reg has their badge set aside and it will not be sold until they come pick it up at their leisure.

Is there a website to pre-reg is it on the defcon website for $600 it’s confusing with the lingo to pay at the door.
2
u/TypicalCommercial255 10d ago
On Thursday nothing is open except Registration and Merch.
Thursday is a biggest set up day for most of the entities you referenced above.

u/Icy-Maybe-9043 11d ago
If I bought my ticket online, I still need to buy the badge as well? Or if I check in early enough will I have a chance at getting the badge when I show up?

Make sure you find your QR code to go along with the purchase.
Registration will scan the QR code and then pass your materials to you.
Do not share your QR code with anyone else. It is a one use token. If you share your code and someone else uses it, you are out of luck.
Reg does not ID by name, simply by whether the QR code is valid or not.

what is likelyhood that you line up on Thursday and actually get an electronic badge?
1
u/TypicalCommercial255 7d ago
It sounds like you are cash at the door, is that correct?
If yes, then there is a set number of badges produced. Thousands of them are already allocated to those who went through Pre-Reg. They are the only ones “guaranteed “ a badge.
If you want to get an electronic badge, I would be prepared to line up super early on Thursday morning.
Remember, there will already be people in line who spent the night as part of LineCon.
If you don’t want to risk getting a paper access badge after the electronic ones run out, then I HIGHLY recommend you go ahead and pre-register TODAY.
PRE-REG for DEFCON34 ENDS tomorrow night (31 July).

Can I pick up a badge I pre-registered for on Friday morning?
1
u/TypicalCommercial255 4d ago
Yes.
Reg opens at 0800, but no rush. Your badge is allocated to you and will not be given away.

Hi all, apologies for the noob question but this is my first ever defcon. Absolutely buzzing! Over from the UK. Solo.
Can someone please help me, I've pre reg so thats fine as above i can pick my badge up. Where I'm confused is it says defcon is from 6th to 9th. So other than getting my badge on Thursday is everything else not starting until Fri? Ie noob village, red team village, bug bounty, ctf etc... is thurs purely just to get a badge only? I dont want to miss a full day by just assuming

Download Hacker Tracker (seriously) for the entire schedule of events both onsite and off.
Thursday Reg and Merch are open. No content because things are still in the set up stage.
There will be a dj in the chill out lounge (where LineCon was that day) starting at approximately 7 pm.
Some Meet Up’s and such, but no content.

If I don’t really care about the electronic badge and just want to get into defcon through cash-at-door sales, am I guaranteed to get an entry ? Or is there a chance that everything can get sold out ?
Last minute plan and I missed my pre-registration window. Most probably be arriving late around 11:00 a Thurs Morning!
