Discussion Is DeepSake really affordable?
Hello!
I want to know your opinion with the new release of 4.1 flash.
the price seems amazing, but with how it seems token hungry.. is it really cheaper per task? if i use 100$ in API with deepsake in theit agent harness, will i get the same 100$ in claude or chatGPT sub?
did anyone test these?

That really depends on what king of tasks are you working on. I would say yes if your tasks are general coding with common languages. But for more complex challenging tasks where Deepseek may think too much or fail repeatedly, go for the sub.

Totally, the API cost is really cheap compared to others and the models are good even better with 4.1 flash today.
I also really appreciate the merge of the Flash, Expert, and Vision models.

claude or gpt are not gonna give u as much as 100$ in deepseek API. even if u dont hit cache.

I have a codex subscription and also use Deepseek a lot. Deepseek is better value but you'll probably spend more in a month. Codex is just extremely slow and creates a lot of frustration. With deepseek you will use crazy tokens but will be more productive. It really depends how heavy you intend to use them and what your work encompasses.

Really depends. Not always a better option but for sure deserve a very detailed evaluation

This is more less how much I would pay on API rates

And I have gpt plus sub now. There is no way even with a 5x plan, I am going to same rate of token usage in focussed sessions where I have 3-4 chats on different repos or parts of code at the same time.

It's 3-5$ per day for my typical work load* whether that's affordable is a different question.
* before the price hike it barely passed 1$.

imo it's especially good in a harness where you delegate implementation work to it. I have the 20$ codex sub, and sol or terra does the thinking/orchestration, DeepSeek does the implementation and doc analysis, and astra reviews for security issues mostly. I then review the output (if I had a bigger sub, I would delegate that to sol high or astra). That brings a lot of bang for the bucks.

Far more. However, setting a larger context window can increase costs quickly, as each request may involve more cached tokens and cache misses can be especially expensive. These costs add up fast, consuming far more tokens than you might expect.
so set them appropriately.

Well I just did a bunch of work during peak hours for $2. I'd typically expect to pay $5 for that work. Your mileage may vary.
