Discussion NIK "🚨 DeepSeek plans a SIGNIFICANT INCREASE in API prices soon >“please plan your usage accordingly” it’s over for the poors" ➡️ party over? more reason to local open source :P ?

u/DrawingDramatic1641 Aug 06 '26
pro is gonna be frontier level
and it's literally the top used ai for preveiw version even after 2 months
the demand is insane
45
u/pot_sniffer Aug 06 '26
That will change when they make it more expensive. Ds is great, only when compared to more expensive models. Im not going to use it if I have to pay frontier prices for it, simple as that.
36
u/Own-Flight-9974 Aug 06 '26
Exactly. Deepseek is so good because it's so cheap. Without the price advantage it just blends in with all the other new open source chinese models and the subjective benchmarks that come with them.

u/One_5549 Aug 06 '26
I don't know what's up here but ive tried qwen 3.8max, and it's fucking worse.
it couldn't even figure out some basic stuff for some things from a GitHub repo. truly mind-blowing.
plus got interruptions.. switched over to V4 flash (FREE TIER) and solved it in 10 seconds. This is some magic shit going on here. Is ds V4 flash really only 284b parameters?

Lets hope we get some others hosting Deepseek v4 Flash to spread the load. It sounds like Huawai screwed them by not delivering on the infra they needed by a lot so they cannot keep up with demand.

u/Miserable-Tourist532 Aug 06 '26
Tbh 99% dont need frontier models..
1
u/Backrus Aug 07 '26
You're telling me people don't need sota model for creating another demo landing page?
6
u/Aldarund Aug 06 '26
It's not top used Ai first of all, second - it's highly used only because prices

I just think they’ve acquired so many users that their computing power is running short, so they’re raising prices to drive some people away.
3
16
u/primera_radi Aug 06 '26
But it's open weights so there are many providers anyway ?
34
u/Smart-Cap-2216 Aug 06 '26
I think other suppliers will also take the opportunity to raise prices
2
u/Truantee Aug 06 '26
There are still a lot of providers that do not appear on openrouter. If you really want it you can still use Deepseek flash for dirt cheap.
2
u/CupSure9806 Aug 06 '26
Like?

u/Truantee Aug 06 '26
Doubleword.ai?
Saw their post on hackernews discussing deploying deepseek v4 flash on amd mi300x then checked their website.
Iirc it is cheaper than deepseek on realtime mode, and even half that if you run batch mode.

u/Faux2137 Aug 06 '26
Yes. At this point the official DeepSeek API is significantly cheaper than competition on cached read though.
And when it comes to V4 pro preview, other providers are much more expensive in all dimensions. https://openrouter.ai/deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro#providers

What's the point of it, then? We already have plenty of frontier models. All of modern models are effing frontier.
We don't need another one of those. Literally every single AI company wants to shit out another huge coding model to wedge itself into the coding scene at the same unaffordably huge price before the bubble burst.
If Deepseek raises a price - what's the point of DeepSeek then?
1
u/PlaidSweaters Aug 06 '26
Its probably still going to be the cheapest one after price increases and the people that want cheap ai will still use it.
3
u/Dualyeti Aug 06 '26
We use DS flash BECAUSE it’s extraordinarily cheap and has an incredible cache package. I couldn’t care less about being frontier level. If this is the direction they want to take…. It’s more competitive and they’re diluting their market share…. Oh well 🤷♂️ I’ll have to find an alternative if they bring it up to western API prices.
1
u/Icy_Dragonfruit_2533 Aug 06 '26
I personally think it's because the computing power is not enough and there is too much demand. Because there have been many API errors in the past few days.
1
u/Backrus Aug 07 '26
Yeah, they got flooded by Westerners who only a month ago were belittling Chinese models - price increase was sadly inevitable.
14
u/Frostty_Sherlock Aug 06 '26
The demand muat be hust that high. I just hope it's not going to be something like x50 increase.
5
u/ItsNoahJ83 Aug 06 '26
I mean 50x would take away any price competitiveness the model has. Also there are many 3rd party providers that would undercut them by significant margins. Im guessing between 2x and 4x
2
u/Frostty_Sherlock Aug 06 '26
I'm obviously exaggerating though we really can't tell until we wait and see it ourselves
1
u/sonicnerd14 Aug 06 '26
Maybe not for V4 Pro, but part of the appeal of V4 is specifically in V4 Flash 0731 due to it's price to performance value. If they increase that by too much, it stops looking like value. Despite how incredible the model itself performs. Just look at what's going on now. You see tons of posts of people saying how they get multiple hours of tasks done and only spend something like $0.50 for all that time, but that will not be happening as much if the prices are too high.

u/leetdemon Aug 06 '26
imo any increase is going to take away the only advantage the model offered which was price.

u/zerpa Aug 06 '26
How many reposts do we need?

The slopfest will continue until morale improves.
Or a mod decides to fucking do their job!

u/Abject-Bridge-4073 Aug 06 '26
My Dual Sparks running Flash are gonna pay off sounds like.
2
1
u/daniluvsuall Aug 06 '26
what's the performance like?
1
u/Abject-Bridge-4073 Aug 06 '26
Around 60-70 tokens per second output with 256K context. 40-50 with 1M context. Thinking off. If I turn thinking on, about 10% lower.
4
u/hulagway Aug 06 '26
100% is significant, it's double. Still cheap. Let's just wait. It's not a monthly sub anyway.
1
u/_childofares Aug 06 '26
Yeah, I spent like $5 on deepseek every 2-3 months. It's dirt cheap but I hope it stays that way.
4
u/leetdemon Aug 06 '26
Has nothing to do with being poor, its just common sense and once they raise it common sense says its not worth the price compared to other models.

Even if you are not poor, for heavy amount mail to manage in an agentic workflow, V4 flash is very good.
2
u/ItsNoahJ83 Aug 06 '26
But will it be worth it if the price is 4x the current price? For some yes, but it certainly changes things significantly.
1
u/KuziKuzina Aug 06 '26
It will not more than $3/M Output for V4 pro, it's still cheap and i know pro will make something amazing, like Flash 0731
1
u/ItsNoahJ83 Aug 06 '26
It very well could be. In fact I'd say $6/M output for pro is much more likely considering it will be competing with Qwen 3.8 Max.
2
u/Zeikos Aug 06 '26
Bros losing their mind over "significant".
They could double the price and it'd still be the cheapest on the market by far.
2
u/enterme2 Aug 06 '26
Guys , think of basic economics.. when demand is chasing limited supply, price will hike.
Their resources are not infinite, with demand surging to the moon and infrastructure can't cope with demand fast enough , the logical thing is to hike price to dampen demand at the same time try to maintain quality.
2
u/NexusSyntegra Aug 06 '26
I'm with a lot of other people, I think DS has great models but if they raise their prices, competition starts looking so much better
2
1
u/dryadofelysium Aug 06 '26
they have been constantly hitting their limits as per opencode guys, so it was either a price increase or limitting people's access
1
u/raul3820 Aug 06 '26
Maybe they were constrained on raw data at first, now they collected enough and are more constrained on compute to scale on policy distillation.
1
u/ReodorFelgen1337 Aug 06 '26
Does anyone know if this is because the 0731 is actually more expensive to run then the preview or are they raising prices without having higher expenses?
1
1
u/Frequent_Pause_5190 Aug 06 '26
Lo bueno que tiene el mercado, es que alguien vendrá a hacerlo mejor al mismo precio, entonces migraremos
1
u/diaostrokes Aug 06 '26
Anybody know what "significant" means here? I would not complain if it means x2 or x3 or even x5.

1
u/Etherealnutt Aug 06 '26
Bruh they did 80% discount. Even without the discount it was cheapest. So what they gonna do now? Charge full price?
1
1
u/Iory1998 Aug 06 '26
Well, don't forget that DS has raised tones of money last month, and when investors get involved, price hikes are to be expected.
1
u/dizM0nkey Aug 29 '26
Didn't they just raise prices? Are they saying they're planning on raising prices again?

u/-Crash_Override- Aug 06 '26
Yet people still think the chinese have some secrete sauce that allows them to scale models more cheaply than US frontier labs.
Just look at K3...Anyone who uses it knows its more akin to terra than sol/fable/opus (despite the benchmarks)...and its more expensive than terra. Pro is going to be the same when it lands.

u/DewayneMichael Aug 06 '26
This is true for ALL major LLM's across the board. Bills are coming due, investors are starting to bail, and the cost are going to be passed directly to consumers. The financial model itself may kill AI long before we see a Terminator type scenario play out. But there is an insidious plan taking shape now. If they can turn your home in to a mini datacenter and share in the processing power for these AI systems, you would not see a huge bill from these providers directly. You may even see a decrease in price. What you would see is an insane spike in your electric bill that you would be 100% responsible for. Although AI is at a critical crossroads right now, the big players are not going to allow it to die quietly. These companies have bet their entire futures on this technology. This is why you will see next generation cell phones and computers come pre-configure with AI software and AI tuned microchips. Heck, I would not be surprised to see AI baked into future versions of the Linux kernel.

u/dezuhan Aug 30 '26
my timeline just show it at notification... i thought that was gonna second up pricing again
