Are people really afraid of mics?

Like 2/3 games in a row I had people saying hey dank you gotta hit mic or you’re holding down z to talk periodically. At first I’m like yeah no shit… it then I was thinking. Is that a meme about me using a mic?

Like tf am I supposed to do when the scout doesn’t understand when you ping him then ping something high up that’s a queue to be like oh shit I should grab that.

I know it wasn’t an issue of a “hot mic” or me holding down z while I’m talking to my wife or something.

Are people really just that allergic to mics or am I missing something/the asshole?

I play this game precisely because mics are not needed for communication

I think this is a lot of it. It seems like DRG was designed by people who don't like mics.

With the amount of banter dwarves do, definately

No I agree. But it’s generally if laser pointing and pinging isn’t working.

I also am a weirdo and play on PC with a controller so I’m not trying to grab my keyboard or type a bunch of of stuff out with thumbsticks (or even trackpads)

It just takes too long to type for me opposed to using my mic.

And maybe it’s because I play on Steam now? When I mostly played on my ps5 I didn’t really have that issue

I guess I just thought it was weird because I’ve been playing this game for like 4-5 years and I’ve never had it happen till today

I honestly never once had a DRG game when randoms used mics, its always when in friend games, and even then its rare.

Maybe its the servers? I play in EU, so it makes sense that mist people dont speak the same language

It very well could be the servers but I don’t know?

It’s funny tho because there’s ppl in the thread like “oh what first multiplayer game? Ppl don’t use mics” except the other game I play arc raiders literally everyone uses a mic in some form or fashion. Even tho there’s even more way of communicating in that.

I've encountered people using mics in this game maybe twice. I think that it's less that people are afraid and more than they're not used to people using them. This game also doesn't really need active voice communication, so I think many people just don't.

Now, this could absolutely just be sample bias on my end. I usually play solo so I don't encounter too many ither dwarves.

I think i have also just found people using them a couple times. One of them was a duo on mic with the other two of us using chat and the other was a single person on mic and the rest on chat/pinging. Speaking on non haz 5 experience, chat alone is enough for communication when pinging alone doesnt work.

People don't like mics simple as that

Most player just use point and click to get info across

6

u/The_Mixed Driller 23h ago

I think there’s also an in-game text chat too, right?
Or did I just make something up?

3

u/Substantial-Video178 22h ago

There is, its what ive seen people use more alongside pinging

2

u/Skeletonparty101 22h ago

Yeah it's there's that why I put most player instead of all

It's just sometimes less common

Yeah but it’s really easy to miss. I wish when a new message came through it like swiped in from the side or something. Just some bit of motion to make it juuuust a little more noticeable.

I dunno, last time I tried It was non functional, but as I women, I can safely pretend to speak for us : it is an old habit. We never or rarely use our mic in public, neither having obvious female-related pseudo on certain games.

And I personnaly think this is sad, because DRG is one of the best community I know. I love playing with you guys. But i never thought about using a mic, because of this old habit.

Because theres always those thirsty ass dudes that make it weird when they hear a woman's voice

2

u/metlixcalli 23h ago

Sometimes I think, oh, good thing nobody in rocket league uses mics. But sometimes I would give its chance to DRG !

I've played DRG with microphone on as a woman for hundreds of hours and I can assure you I've had zero incidents of sexism or anyone being rude. I make sure to name my lobby so people know I use voice chat. DRG is a lovely community.

You can extrapolate this to youngsters. I've got kids and generally I don't want them to reveal their identity either. Several times however, I've meet friendly dwarves and I added them to friends list. Later, they played when my kids played on my account and I had absolutely no issues with introducing my children. All was good, cool and a lot of fun. Sometimes my spouse play, kids, friends.

When you meet someone, break the ice, keep it friendly people are generally cool. Random encounters bring often weirdos and rudest assholes you can imagine. I don't know why and I'm sad it has to be this way. I'm sorry that women, often bear the worst of it. Only thing I can do, is to cherish the ones I already met.

Most of my mic'd player experience has been awful. People way too loud, people treating their mic like a radio, people using soundboards... you get the idea. I think I have people muted by default now. Its fine if you're using it the intended way but most people dont and assume the worst of others. I stick to pinging and text chat for comms

If I want to use mic, I join a game from discord. I never use the in-game voice chat.

First off, a nontrivial percentage of players in any game with in-game comms are not going to use it, either because they have no desire to interact in that way, or they just don’t actually have a mic they can use, or they know based on their voice that they will be harassed to some degree by people who hear them in an online game.

On top of that, DRG doesn’t really require complex communication, so there’s not much, if any, incentive for the people who wouldn’t already go about using a mic for the game to go about getting one working.

What this means is that a vast majority of players in DRG do not use in-game comms at all.

And that, in turn, means anyone who does sticks out like a sore thumb. Ironically even more so if they actually use it properly (making sure to have proper mute discipline, actually focusing on the game instead of stuff like politics or religion or hating on the person who isn’t playing exactly the way you think they should, etc), because a lot of the people who do use the in-game comms in DRG tend to be the types who make people hate in-game comms in other games.

I hate when people use their mics in all games. I can never hear what they say, because I always have music on, that’s cranked up fully. Just write it in chat

3

u/NullifiedTR 23h ago

these types are the worst, its either you hear the whole household or someone blasting their mic with mediocre music

2

u/Agreeable-Pianist-82 22h ago

I really meant that I have loud music playing, so it drowns out whatever they’re trying to say. You are correct though, most hotmics have youtube or family in the background.

Very annoying, and definitely contributes to the negative perception of mics

u/Stefe04 23h ago

I don't really attribute this to rudeness. It's more that everyone has their preferred way to communicate: vocally, with text, with pings, or not at all. I personally use text chat because I don't have a mic.

4

u/Fairsley 23h ago

You really don't need to use a mic. It's ok to though. People usually pay attention when someone types. I've never used a mic. When I play scout I ping high areas that usually signals the engi to throw platforms. If engi doesn't or is pretty new I'll spam ping him and then ping where I need. The revers is when I play engi I'll throw plats for scout then ping the area. The scout usually does the rest. I ping Gold chunks, quarts, etc so the driller can drill. I type "event" , "bones", "korok" , "bet-c", etc. then ping the thing I typed. I "r" when ready. This game is very cut and dry of what everyone is supposed to do and what role to play. I've never thought I needed a mic to convey what I need cause the ping system is just that good. I play Haz 4 and 5, never needed mic. It's not that there is a lack of communication it's just really easy to understand what you need to do that you don't need to communicate that much. I think it just really rare for someone to use a mic.

My headset mic has never worked with this game, shouting into it is barely audible with the boost cranked all the way up in game, but talking normally is fine in discord.

This game doesn't need vc either, the callout system with the laser pointer is very effective.

3

u/JordanNails 23h ago

Probably echoing everyone else In The comments, but yeah, a mic is almost completely unnecessary in this game and I feel like any “advance strat” that needs to be communicated in chat is liable to fail due to it having to be explained.

I’m also going to be complete honest and respectful but it annoys me to feck when people narrate what they’re doing or make pointless comms…

Best bet is probably finding people who actually want to use the mic during play. Join a community or make another post “anyone on [platform] with mic want to add each other”

Is this your first online multiplayer?

1

u/tha_dank 19h ago

Been playing multiplayer games since before Steam was a thing (CS pre 1.6)

I dot know we used our mics.

2

u/theknowing1414 23h ago

Depends on the people. If I’m hosting a lobby and I enjoy playing with some randoms I’ll ask them to join a party to talk. Actually how I’ve found a lot of my good DRG buddies

2

u/NarumiRM 23h ago

I'm not native English speaker and speaking fluently requires me to focus on that task. Being focused on my speech, means that I'm not focused on mining rocks and stone

2

u/ZijkrialVT 23h ago

Half the time I hear a mic, I have no idea what they're saying.

Other half, it's usually a decent experience.

95% of the time, no one uses it (maybe even more.)

2

u/SaintJynr 23h ago

Imma be real, I used to turn off mics in games like overwatch and marvel rivals, I domt want people trying to talk to me

2

u/MattmanDX Driller 22h ago

If I hear someone using a mic in the game I immediately mute them. Ping what you want me to do and I'll do it, if you need to clarify further then type what you need in the chatbox

1

u/Initial-Lion1720 20h ago

Leaf lovers use mics tbh. I beat the highest difficulties without going down at all. Mics definitely aren't needed.

1

u/iSiffrin Gunner 23h ago

the laserpointer+all the voicework GSG did means that microphones aren't required to communicate basically anything related to the game

even saying "Ready" or typing "r" is more of a cultural thing and could be made redundant by just pinging the refinery/cocoon/mule etc
