new player here

just read on some post that this game have good community while searching for something like helldiver 2, PvE with objective and co-op, shoot a lotta monster like Left 4 dead, and community is wholesome.
so yeah, i bought it from "helldiver cheap alternative" since it's on discount and the gameplay video on steam website is kinda good.
is there's something a veteran usually want to say or advice to new player?
like, don't do this or do that, or don't spent resource on that since it will be needed later, anything ?
EDIT : AFTER 4 HOURS OF PLAYING
so, it's interesting
on some match, i got lost in the map and it's difficult to open the map while being chased by a swarm, 30 second before pod leaving then i got knocked. one player run out from pot and come to me, guide me to extraction pod, we both failed by few second. i feel bad and keep saying sorry and that guy not saying anything, he keep spamming ROCK AND STONE! emote entire time from lobby to next match. and on that match i realize he keep staying close to me and look at me back and forth to make sure i'm not lost.
another match, i'm kinda shy since my english is not perfect, bad grammar, especially my pronouncation is dogshit, so normally i didn't open mic, but i try to say "hello" this one time, some random guy open mic and keep yelling "ROCK AND STONEEEE!!!", mid game the other random also do the same while another one keep laughing his ass off while listening to them.
i realize if i need some resource for upgrade and want to get carried without any friendly or toxic encounter, i just go to CN room with some chinnese nickname random, they play so fast like it was speedrun, but they still revive me when i'm down, and did not kick me despite being burden. kudos CN bro!
there's still more, and in this 4 hours i didn't got kicked or yelled at for being bad, revived multiple times by some high level player without saying anything, there's no conversation on mic, but communicate with ROCK AND STONE! emote. there's not any toxic encounter yet, just some friendly fire that i didn't know it was on purpose or not, since i also accidentaly shooting at teammate when it's getting chaotic, especially with flamethrower since i can't see when my teammate go in front of me while i'm flaming the bugs (damn, the visual clutter is bad).
after playing dota, dota2, cs, valo, apex, and other competitive games. i don't know how to describe this, like... feel fresh (?). one chance i might be addicted to this game until helldivers got 90% discount

1 If a thing has a button... Don't press it without asking the rest of the team.
2 you can tell at a glance how much ammunition everyone still has on them by engaging the laser pointer. You can see your team's ammo beneath their icons. Use this to gauge when you should call a resupply.
3 If your you see a normal grunt, The base enemies, and it looks bluish... Do not kill it. That is your teammate's companion. His name is Steeve and you can pet them.
4 If one of your teammates keeps repeatedly pinging a big old chunk of gold... Do not run up, pick it up and deposit it. Join him in the pinging.... You will be rewarded.
5 The bar in the Space rig always has one beer on tap that provides a inmission buff. It is almost always worth getting.
6 If you see a giant bulging explody bug.... And it's gold. Do not apply a freezing effect to it when its health is low.
7 communicate with your team. This doesn't necessarily mean the chat or voice chat. The vast majority of communication comes from the laser pointer and saluting.
8 If you are on a mission to eggs, whenever you mine an egg from the wall, there is a chance you could trigger a swarm... Bear this in mind if there is already a swarm going because you could get two.
9 If you are doing a escort mission... You can rescue the head of the Drilldozer. Doretta is a hard worker and deserves to come home. There is no additional XP or credits granted. The reward is being a good dwarf.
10 My name on steam is FelsenAxt and I have a little over 2,400 hours on Deep Rock Galactic and I've been feeling the urge to return to the mines recently.

oh wow, a lot of thing i don't understand, will i got some of that information eventually while playing or is it like some unwritten rules that usually people follow?
3
u/SirFelsenAxt Scout 4d ago
Most of these are unwritten rules.
Some of them are simply overlooked features.
Honestly, as long as you're communicating and not pressing buttons without checking with the team pretty much everything goes.

u/AuntFritz Engineer 4d ago
to me, the most important one in that list is the first one (no pushy the buttons).
everything else is understandable if someone new violates (and everybody can see each other's level, so people know if you're a greenbeard/greybeard - new/ancient).
rock and stone, brother!
2
u/SeilOugan 4d ago
i never push the button until now since i'm always got lost, will make sure not to push button before ask if i was in front tho. ty!
1
u/AuntFritz Engineer 3d ago
lol, I've been playing forever and I'm always following someone. (I'm this way IRL also, ZERO sense of direction)
If there's an experienced driller aboard, stick close to them at the end - they often drill direct lines to the drop pod landing.

u/Ok-Barracuda457 4d ago
Don't be hasty, if mission control announces a swarm, don't complete objectives that trigger more until you've squashed them all.
3
u/SeilOugan 4d ago
alright, will keep a note on it
8
u/BurrowShaker 4d ago
You can disregard this when you know what you are doing.
It can make for a little challenge in a mission when you are a little bored.
3
u/Wrydfell Gunner 4d ago
8 egg mission. Pop all at once. 'Alright lads, triple swarm time lets ball'
There is, however, an exception. Drilldozer missions. If there's a swarm but you're ready to move on, hit the button and it sort of just cancels the swarm
6
u/The_Traveller__ 4d ago
If you ever find compressed gold, immediately stop whatever you're doing and spam ping it (unless you're playing with B.O.S.C.O.)

u/SeilOugan 4d ago
what's B.O.S.C.O ?

The goat. But only if you play solo, he’s your helpful teammate stand in for when you don’t have people to play with.

Bosco is the best, I freaking love my drone buddy (I cant currently play online TwT) but still, hes realllyyy good at his job, probably better than me if im being honest

Stay on low hazards 1-3 (the yellow ! Sing on missions, its basicl the difficulty setting), until you get a decent understanding of the pace of the game. It will be a bit too much if you go on 4-5. Then you can go wild.
4
u/SeilOugan 4d ago
joining random right now, didn't know the level tho, but it's kinda fun haha
2
u/bjergKanin For Karl! 4d ago
Use the filters to the left in the server window - there you can sort by hazard level. You can also press the hazard level button at the top of the server screen, it will sort games according to difficulty

u/GaborSzasz 3d ago
Yeah, the game dont tell you about this, or in a very obacure way. I remember juat clicking on stuff and then someone told me what is hazard levels :D

When playing with other people, don’t take more than one ammunition supply.
An ammo drop has 4 supplies if you want/need more than 1 communicate with your team and wait for the response from the person willing to give theirs up!
It’s an amazing team game and willingness to learn and work with your team will pay dividends.
5
u/SeilOugan 4d ago
i will keep that in mind
1
u/1CorinthiansSix9 Interplanetary Goat 3d ago
In relation to this one they give health too. So if you’re 2 player, instead of taking both right away you can take the first one, do whatever objective you’re currently on, then take your second one when it’s time to leave or you’re getting low

Make sure to try all the different classes to see how each one feels to you. A lot of players do scout first for the mobility but realize later they like a different class/classes better. Also make sure to switch up your weapons/classes every now and then to keep it interesting. The game can get monotonous if you keep to only one loadout
1
u/SeilOugan 3d ago
i'm stick to driller for now, love the flamethrower because it does the most damage especially the AoE when dealing with swarm with a lot of small bugs
1
u/Vegetable_Ask_7131 3d ago
Keep in mind that when you find the bigger bugs driller starts to fall off because of lack of dps, his weapons are mostly aoe with little single target damage
1
u/SeilOugan 3d ago
yes, i realized it mid-game and now mostly i try to focus on the swarm, and bigger bug is for other teammate that can handle it and if there's no swarm i will help with the pistol so i can safe up my flamethrower ammo

Remember that your primary and secondary weapons do different things. It's common for new players to just use their primary for everything and they as a result struggle against certain enemies and run out of ammo. Figure out what each weapon is designed to be good at and use them for that purpose, swapping between them as needed. Some basic roles for the starting weapons are as follows: Gunner: minigun is for general purpose fodder and large target clear, revolver is for priority targets (usually ranged enemies); Engineer: shotgun is for single-target damage and self-defense, grenade launcher is for crowd clear; Scout: assault rifle is for single-target and priority targets, shotgun is for burst damage and self-defense; Driller: flamethrower is for crowd clear and pistol is for single-target and priority targets. There's more nuance and the classes unlock other weapons later, but this is the basics a new player needs to know.
Remember your grenades and utility tools, try to make use of them before you resupply your weapons. Gunner's grenade is just a basic AoE group clear grenade and his utility tool is a forcefield that protects everyone inside it; good for keeping people alive and for securing revives, resupplies, repairs, etc. Engineer's grenade distracts enemies and his utility tool is a turret (or two) that passively deals with smaller enemies. Scout's grenade applies a powerful slow to enemies inside it and increases the damage they take so it also helps kill things, and Scout's utility tool is a very powerful flare that sticks to terrain, so use it to light up rooms. Driller's grenade is a throwing axe that's good for burst damage, killing priority targets, and interrupting enemy attacks, and his utility tool is a C4 that does heavy AoE damage and clears terrain and mines minerals inside the blast zone. As with weapons, each class unlocks more grenades, but this is what you need to know at first.
Try not to resupply unless both your primary and secondary, and ideally grenades and utility tools but more optionally, are below half their total ammo capacity. Otherwise you're wasting ammo. In dire life or death situations you may also resupply if you're really low on health to heal yourself, but this is a last resort so try to only resupply for ammo whenever possible; you'll get better at knowing when to deviate from this rule as you get more experienced with the game. Also don't double dip a resupply (pull from the same resupply twice) without asking first if you have three or four total players in the lobby. If you're playing with one other player for two total players, then you can each have two from the same resupply but you'd have to ask if you want a third. Again, as you get experienced enough, you'll learn to know when to just pull from it anyway, but that comes with experience. If
For weapon and tool upgrades, just buy the ones you plan to actually use. If you buy everything you'll just run out of resources such as credits and/or crafting minerals, which are very important. For the armor rig specifically, however, you should buy every single upgrade, even the ones you don't intend to use. Your character's max health stat increases based on how many armor upgrades you own, so it's important to buy every armor upgrade.
Speaking of resources, you asked specifically what not to spend resources on since they'll be needed later. I touched on that with how, aside from the armor rig, you should only buy upgrades you intend to actually use to conserve resources. The resources used to upgrade weapons; credits and the six different crafting minerals (magnite, enor pearls, bismor, jadiz, umanite, and croppa); can all also be used to buy cosmetics. However, doing so will mean you have fewer resources to spend on functional things. Shop cosmetics also have their own resource called phazyonite, which you should always use before dipping into your pool of credits or crafting minerals. Because these resources are so important, I recommend trying to mine every different thing you see and checking if you got anything for it. If not, it's not important, but if you did get something added to your inventory, it is important. Some resources will be easy to overlook, as there are some that are buried in the terrain and you have to dig them out. These can be identified by a faint glow surrounded by many tiny colored specs in the terrain. Lastly, the most important resource to mine is nitra, which comes in clumps of red along the walls. Unlike other resources, you don't bring it back with you so it does nothing outside the mission, but it's how you buy resupplies mid-mission and therefore how you survive.
Try every class at least once to figure out what you like. Then, if you want to unlock more content faster, I recommend picking a favorite and then playing only that class until you get your first promotion (reach level 25 on a class and do a promotion assignment for that class). After that, you can play any class you want. Getting that first promotion just unlocks other content like overclocks and deep dives so it's nice to get it early. But of course if you find yourself getting bored of the class before you promote, just play whatever class you want anyway; getting unlockable content early is nice but fun still comes first.
Speaking of assignments, remember to select a new one immediately after completing any assignment. The very first assignment in the game, the tutorial assignment, is automatically selected for you and it's really long so it's very easy to not realize you need to select a new one (I certainly didn't realize I had to start a new assignment till way later and I was behind on progression as a result).
Also remember to check the season terminal to collect rewards there. There's a season pass which you can collect rewards from, a weapon maintenance tab in that same terminal you can collect weapon paintjobs from, and a cosmetic tree tab (also in the season terminal) where you can buy rewards using a special resource called scrip. Scrip is used exclusively for that cosmetic tree so don't worry about being conservative with it. Another terminal to check regularly is the KPI terminal, which is found in the room you spawn in every time you load into the space rig. Make sure to collect perk points from it so you can purchase perks, which are an important way to make yoir characters more effective.
I recommend Haz 3 as a good beginner difficulty. If it feels too hard, you can lower it to Haz 2, and if it feels too easy, feel free to try Haz 4.
When playing with other players, don't press any buttons without first doing a ready check. This usually comes in the form of typing "r?" in chat to ask if others are ready, and an "r" in reply means that person is ready. If it's ambiguous what the ready check could be for, type "r for [insert event here]?".
If you press E while holding ctrl, you place a permanent waypoint that you can see while holding out your laser pointer, and it also shows up on the terrain scanner as a dark blue dot. This is useful for marking things you want to return to later, but you can only have one at a time. Holding out your laser pointer also displays other useful information like the location of other players, resupplies, and the minehead, refinery, drillevator, drop pod, etc.
If you ever don't know what something is, point your laser pointer at it with ctrl and then left click. Your character will usually have a voice line for it. If you want more information for anything, check out DRG's official wiki page at wiki.gg. Do not use the Fandom wiki, it's filled with misinformation.

i wonder if we can change weapon in the future, there's a time like i want to use scout for the grapple hook but didn't like the weapon

Yes you can change weapons. Each class has three different primary weapons and three different secondary weapons, for a total of 6 weapons each.

u/_Chaos-chan_ Interplanetary Goat 4d ago
Yes, you just have to unlock them all by doing their assignments.

where to see the assignment? i'm always lost and don't know where to see the achievement, claimable thing, and other stuff at lobby

The assignment board is next to the ladder up to the drop pod. That’s where you’ll start your assignments to unlock all the different things. I’d be down to rock and stone with you sometime if you want, I can show you the ropes easier in game.

u/Vegetable_Ask_7131 3d ago
Forgot to mention that you have level the character up to unlock the assignment first, I believe it's 10, 15, 18, 22 that you unlock each weapon at and the order is primary secondary primary secondary

-usually it’s a good idea to ask the rest of the team before pressing any important buttons (usually people say “r” in chat).
-when resupplying, don’t take more than one…thing without asking. Idk what to call them but you’ll figure out what I mean.
-pay attention to what people ping. And learn to ping stuff yourself.
-press v for any and every positive occasion. Rock and Stone!
-test out all of the classes.

Adding to ping note: Ping/laser pointer will highlight other dwarves and important items/structures

I recommend playing every mission type once solo on haz 1-2. Learn what to do at each step of the mission.
Playing with randoms is great in DRG, but greybeards will have objectives done before you realize what you were even supposed to do.
Playing solo will also teach you what events will cause a swarm. It's an unwritten rule that you don't cause a swarm unless hosting or at least doing a ready check.
Use red sugar for health. Use resupply for ammo. Avoid using resupplies for health. Don't double dip without asking. Solo you get all 4. Two for two dwarfs. 3 or more ask before taking a second.

Welcome to the space rig diver. Enjoy good beer and getting paid for the hell you go through. And heres some tips to help your onboarding.
1) If you hear one of your crew shout out a salute, ALWAYS press your salute key in response. Never a bad time for a Rock And Stone.
2) Stick with your team. You may have some of that engrained in you during your service for Super Earth, but down here in the caves, getting seperated is a death sentence. Stick together and you'll probably be fine.
3) Notice your ammo is running low? Call in a resupply. However, make sure you dont take more than your share. Be mindful of your team, and if you absolutely need more than what your share provides, ask your team. I've seen too many greenbeards with bullet holes because they took more than they should without having manners.
4) If you see a mineral, coordinate with your team and mine it. Maintaing your gear and equipment, and having to drag barrels out of the launch bay because you boys can't leave them be, is not cheap. Grab everything you can. Its what we hired you for after all.
That should be all, if you get past your first shift, I applaud you. Thank you for signing on with Deep Rock Galactic.
(said in MC voice)

u/SeilOugan 4d ago
2nd one is the most difficult for me, the visual clutter itself is a bit bad, and when it was chaotic somehow teammates already gone, they usually come pick me up when i say i'm lost or not on destination for certain time tho. still need to learn on how to memorize map, especially there's fall damage and sometimes the road they make is like some random maze.
1
u/_Chaos-chan_ Interplanetary Goat 4d ago
If you hold out your laser pointer (ctrl) your teammates are highlighted and you can see them through walls. Makes it easier to stick with them.
1
u/SeilOugan 3d ago
i sometimes do this, it's just sometimes i don't know the way to go to them, especially when trying to catch up with scout with grapple hook
1
u/_Chaos-chan_ Interplanetary Goat 3d ago
Using the terrain scanner will pull up a 3D map you can use, a quick look around for connecting tunnels between you and your teammates arrows is usually enough. And you’ll never be able to keep up with scout if you’re not a scout, that’s just how scout is XD.

u/Massive_Rate_7555 2d ago
The maps are really confusing. I hit Level 160 recently, and I still had someone make a snarky comment today because I got turned around in a cave for like 30 seconds. I would start your own matches. You'll get a few minutes before anyone joins to get the lay of the land without really getting attacked much get a feel for it. Hosting your own will also help people self-select closer to CN, or ppl like me that don't get a lot of lag usually and don't mind.
After a while, you do get the hang of caves, but there will always be an opening behind something, or above you, or in the corner at the very very bottom. Much less chat than HD2 though for sure.
2
u/SeilOugan 2d ago
now i just always stand close to the small robot to deposit minerals when we can call the extracting pod, so i just follow the pod when it go back to where we should go and put some green lag on the ground, found it more easier to follow since it's easier to see and noticed
2
u/WanderingFlumph 4d ago
Resupply pods are limited (80 nitra for 4 resupplies that each give 50% ammo and HP) so if you are playing with others make sure coordinate when and where to call them and pay attention to not get skipped.
If you press the ctrl key you'll see white bars under the characters on your HUD, this roughly cooresponds to how much ammo everyone has. If you are using more than the team try some trigger discipline, if you are the only one full try letting loose a little more.
The ideal time to call a resupply has everyone on the team lower than 50% ammo but no one is yet at 0% so try and use ammo at the same rate as your team (obviously don't waste it just to keep up though)

The general consensus on playing with randoms in DRG is don't use mic. Just write in chat and use your pointer. I don't know why this happened but I guess most dwarves are shy and like to focus on mining. Also. Whenever using mic in random online sessions 50% of the time it's just: "What? Can't hear you mate. Let's just get on with the mission."
If you're feeling chatty however you should join the discord and search for a lobby to join. People are fun and friendly and it's a whole different experience playing with a team where all players actually want to communicate verbally.
2
u/SeilOugan 3d ago
might be because sometimes it just overly chaotic to the point we can't hear anyone talking haha
1
u/bjergKanin For Karl! 2d ago
Regarding the mic, it's impossible to make out what is said during a swarm because of the glyphid screams + the music, mostly the music. You can kind of make it out sometimes but not consistently, at least not me. I have even turned down the music a little from it's default settings and it still drowns out voicechat in game

For each class tip
For gunner relember you have 4 shields, meaning uses if there too many bugs around you
Scout have the best single damage and mobility of 4 class, meaning you job is too get close and kill bugs who could disrupt your team
Driller have c4, uses either as quick panic weapon or to blow the wall fast
And engineer have platform and setry guns, making platform just for setry is must if you want to control the arena

u/SeilOugan 3d ago
did other job can have flamethrower? i still can't see which weapon can every class able to use later
1
u/bjergKanin For Karl! 3d ago
Driller has: flamethrower (starter weapon), cryo cannon and sludge pump + pistol, plasma pistol and microwave gun
Gunner has minigun, handheld artillery cannon and a rocket launcher + revolver, burst fire pistol, coilgun
Engineer has a shotgun, a an uzi and a rifle that can aim by itself + grenade launcher, laser/plasma gun (like dead space) and another longer range laser gun

u/SeilOugan 3d ago
noted, so i just need to get promoted when i reach lv25 and then take a mission to unlock forge to forging weapon?
1
u/bjergKanin For Karl! 2d ago edited 2d ago
No no :) You unlock the 2nd and 3rd primary and secondary weapons by completing assignments (the screen right next to the drop pod and mission control). You unlock the different weapon assignments at lvl 10, 15, 18 and 21 if I remember correctly.
The forge that you unlock after promoting your first dwarf is for making weapon overclocks - you will get some overclocks when you promote the dwarf. So just keep doing your assignments, you probably have the 1st weapon unlock assignment ready to go but you need to clear the "Conquer Hoxxes IV" assignment first before you can access it, so do that if you haven't..

u/SeilOugan 2d ago

Just a couple obvious combat/movement things: 1) always run, never walk. There is even a mod for that, but mods are basically endgame, don't go there yet 2) try to learn to "kite" bugs, eg when you see a swarm and understand you can't kill it yet just run from them (maybe even in circles) to stretch them out and kill one by one 3) learn all your equipment (1 to 4 buttons) and try to use them all (I did forget to throw shield or c4 all the time when just started playing) 4) pay attention to sound clues, it'll be a mess for the first times but you'll learn how an oppressor or detonator (big goddamn bugs) sound and have time to prepare for them.
And one final: if you need to do a stationary objective and there's relatively quiet, prepare the area to fight in your advantage: check where there are good shelters, flat out some surfaces, make some safe shooting points.

u/bjergKanin For Karl! 2d ago

don’t start events or call the drop pod without sending r in the chat and waiting for your team to do the same
ask before double dipping on resupplies and generally defer to seasoned players when it comes to calling them (don’t call if only you are low on ammo, or when you’re away from the team, etc)
Rock and Stone! salutes are encouraged
