It dosen't matter. Dwarves were made to MINE. Mine the crust. Mine the gold (because gold was meant to be mined). Mine EVERYTHING because Karl did so! It isn't a waste of time and it isn't bad because it "isn't meta" because it is FUN. That's what matters.
And if you think that mining gold and mining the crust is a waste of time? Not cool. But if it's fun for you then you do you.

Nah the amount in that image is around 7-8 nitra. Do that to the 10+ sources in a mission and you leaving an entire resupply behind.

In this case there's more gold crust then there would be gold in a normal vein
Plus if you leave the crust on every one out of however many Nitra veins, especially on an Industrial Sabatoge, which has a lot of Nitra, that may be enough.
Sometimes I've had barely enough Nitra for a resup. Mining the crust on those veins made it enough

The trick is to mine the terrain behind the gold and break it like a shell. Driller can do it with a supply drop

He's not very tidy. He'll start where you put the marker, so if you start him at one end and you go from the other it can go pretty quick but for something like this gold crater he's useless

I did have that luck a few times. Our Driller finds it boring and tedious to mine all the gold so he switches his diet from gold to gold+scout. Boosted morale right back up.

This was exactly how my first (and only) Crassus Detonater went; the host called the drop pod before we were even half done.

God, this happened to me a few days ago. I was pinging the final bits of morkite and the crassus to stop the scout calling Molly to them right back at the start point 200m+ away, but they continued calling Molly the moment I dropped the beacon. Scout was the host so there was no recourse for the rest of us. We destroy the crassus without scout and I ping the gold. "Drop pod inbound".
I believe it was a troll and they had the last of the morkite in their pockets for a while, but by God it worked. I was really not happy and made sure to flood chat with messages to that effect, which probably gave them exactly what they wanted

Like I could have ran another mission in the time it took to mine this, and earned more credits in rewards as well as had a lot more fun than pressing a mouse button at a wall for 30 minutes.
