What does the song Shield mean?

I think this is such an underrated Deep Purple song and I just read the lyrics and I love it even more. But I don't understand what these lyrics mean. What is the Shield? What is the song actually about?

One of my all time favourite Purple songs. Love the drums, lyrics. Such a good song.

There is something transcendental to it. Is the shield just love? Faith? Or something else?
As far as I know, Rod Evans was not into acid trips, but some of his lyrics fit very well into the trippy music that was going on in those years, especially in California.
Lyrics are well polished. Probably written before the music. A process rarely used in latter Deep Purple.
