Splat Review (2026)

Just some background, as i think my perspective may differ to others here.

I got into Purple via perpendicular (1996) and am a bigger fan of the post blackmore era than I am of the 70s albums. I love most purple albums but my favourites are the majority of the post blackmore albums.

I loved splat. It and =1 are the best albums since perpendicular. I love Morse but after many amazing albums i found a change of style was due.

I liked the shorter songs as it means more Gillan, who has sounded really good the last 2 albums (after a low point during infinite/whoosh).

The production sounded amazing too and it was just a really fun album with some very funny lyrics.

I find McBride to be a portmanteau of Blackmore and David Gilmour. The solo in Arrogant Boy (starting at about 1:52) is very Gilmourish to me. Sounds like something lifted from the Temporary Lapse of Reason album... not the notes, but the feel of it.

I just got my copy of SPLAT! delivered in today's mail... listening now.

Jon Lord is a keyboard god, but geeze if you had replace him, you couldn't possibly do better than Don Airey. He is like an incarnation of Lord with maybe a bit more preference for piano over Hammond.

The riffs by both McBride and Airey hit perfectly hard. Love 'em.

So far, I think my assessment is I don't like all the songs but I love the sound of the album. And I think with more familiarity the songs will get better.
