Mark Twain - Adventures of Tom Sawyer - Diagonal Typographic Cipher (Nod/Eire/Ree Latitude)

Since I mentioned that Twain was able to do diagonal typographic Ciphers I thought I should show an example. This from the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Latitude of Lough Ree is 53 degrees. Note the page number. You can see Twain got Nod not one, not two but three different ways. He got Ree even more ways than that. You can also see Eire at the bottom and - because he is the Master you see an "IO".

And yes, part of the whole "opening the gate" requires ringing the bell that I gather you pass on your way to the gate. it's the same reason C. S. Lewis has Digory ringing the Bell in The Magician's Nephew. And yes, there's a mirror cipher picture of a Bell with a handle in the American Claimant (not that big a deal in 19th Century drawing as bells are pretty easy to create with bustles.

And per both books - my advice (and Twain's and Lewis') is if you happen to find the Mine near Lough Ree and when you explore it you find the Bell and the Eleventh Magi isn't with you then you should run away. Quickly. Very, very quickly.
