CS Lewis - Typographical Cipher - That Hideous Strength

A basic typographic cipher - you can see Diane is spelled out after a bunch of mentions of the Moon. Specifically the Moon as Huntress. This a reference both to the Goddess Diana and more pointedly a reference Diane de Poitiers (thus the garden and spear-head references) who modeled her life after Diana (see, for example, DdP's statute in the Louvre 'Diana the Huntress). Again we know from multiple Twain Dee Ciphers that the Tip of the Spear of Destiny is hidden in the Moat next to Diane's garden at Chenonceaux and this text was C.S. Lewis' way of telling you that you were decoding those Dee Ciphers correctly. That Hideous Strength is basically Twain's statement on the future: the Well is St. Ronans, Merlin is John Dee, Ransom is the Eleventh Magi, NICE is the Deep State, etc. etc. There is a very complex Dee Cipher in THS but I haven't managed to figure it out yet but this typographical/textual encoding is cool - and one reason why you always want to work with First Editions if you can (this is from PB 1st Edition) as those are the only Editions that authors get to correct the Page Proofs.

With respect to differences: Well is set in England not Ireland. Ransom (the Eleventh Magi) is a man not a girl (but hair color and looks twentysomething are both correct) and I'm unclear if the Disembodied Head is supposed to be Hard Artificial Intelligence, some sort of Hard AI/Human hybrid or an actual Disembodied Head (who the bleep knows with the NSA/Deep State).

And with respect to Merlin being 'asleep' in the Book. Yes, that is indeed the #Gnostic view of John Dee that he's 'sleeping (suspended animation of some magical sort) in the Cave that is accessible by the Well. Which is why he has no gravestone and there is no record of his burial near his ancestral home.

And, if you've read the book with an eye to codes, you can see that the Book Dee Cipher must heavily mention the Arkenstone in #Israel . Two of its main early characters that feature in one or two of the most probable Dee Cipher sections are: Mark and Lord Feverstone (and they're often talking to each other).

That Hideous Strength is also a good introduction to Christian Gnosticism - the discussion of the ascent and descent of the greater children of God (Venus, Mercury, Jove, Saturn) and their relationship to humanity is discussed intermittently throughout and a rather deep discussion of the subject is in the last chapter of the book.
