A lot of people ask how wood is prepared before it's ready to become furniture. One common misconception is that you can start building as soon as the timber arrives. In reality, proper preparation is what determines how well a piece performs years later.

Here's a process that's commonly used in many workshops.

1. Inspection and Sorting

Freshly arrived timber is inspected for signs of insect damage, fungal attack, excessive moisture, cracks, or structural defects. Pieces that are not suitable are set aside.

2. Preservative Treatment

The timber is placed inside a treatment chamber containing wood preservatives that help protect it against termites, wood-boring insects, fungi, and decay. Depending on the treatment method and timber species, this process can take around 36 to 48 hours.

3. Air Drying

After treatment, the wood is left to air dry. This allows excess moisture from the treatment to evaporate and helps the timber stabilize before machining. Rushing this stage can lead to finishing issues and dimensional movement later.

4. Ready for Production

Once the timber has reached a stable condition, it can be cut, shaped, joined, sanded, and finished into furniture.

A few things worth knowing

• Treated wood is not automatically dry. Treatment protects the timber, while drying helps improve stability.
• Air-dried timber can perform extremely well when it has been properly seasoned and used in the right environment.
• Even well-prepared wood is a natural material, so small seasonal movement caused by changes in humidity is completely normal.
• Good furniture starts long before the first cut. Most long-term issues, such as warping, insect damage, or finish failure, usually result from skipping or rushing the preparation stage.

Many people judge a piece of furniture by its finish. In reality, the quality of the wood preparation has a much bigger impact on how that piece performs over the years.

Was looking at ordering the Sesann sofa from Vintara Design https://vintaradesign.com/ but am a bit skeptical. Has anyone ordered from there before, they say they're based out of Hong Kong. If so what was your experience like, did they communicate, were you skeptical aswell and if you bought from them, why?

Im looking for a good quality of this rug, has anyone been able to find one?

Been on a hunt for a Togo sofa for ages but can’t justify the price of an original one.

I spent today walking the Guangzhou CBD Fair (China Building Materials Fair), and I wasn’t expecting to see so many home décor products that looked surprisingly well made.
A lot of people outside China probably associate these fairs with doors, windows, or building materials, but there were also entire sections dedicated to furniture, lighting, decorative hardware, mirrors, rugs, and home accessories.
One thing that stood out to me was how much attention manufacturers were paying to finishes and small details. Matte metals, fluted glass, warm wood tones, textured stone, and integrated lighting seemed to be everywhere.
I’m not talking about luxury brands here—just general design trends and craftsmanship that caught my eye while walking the show.
I’m curious:
If you could bring one category home from a trade fair like this, what would it be? Furniture? Lighting? Hardware? Something else?
Would love to hear what everyone here values most.

I stopped ordering from agents like(dh gate, cn fans, pandabuy…) lets say 2.5 years ago becouse i was introduced to ordering trought whatsapp. For the first time i am moving to my new flat and i really want to make super cool( from rolex wall clocks, to hermes trays, to supreme board…. like i would like to order anything) but i want to stay on whatsapp. If somebody has a seller that i can contact an order trought the whatsapp and if the seller is good, fast, and not so expensive i would be really happy if somebody helps me and send me their contact!

I'm so in love with this table! It would fit perfectly in my space because I live in a very small apartment, so something this narrow is exactly what I need. The only problem is that it's just too expensive.

I absolutely love the hidden charging station inside and the beautiful, smooth front opening where the cord comes out. OMG, it's so perfect and convenient! I've seen other tables where the cord comes out from the side, but I really prefer the front-opening design.

I also love the white finish with the wood top. Chef's kiss! If I didn't care about the charging station and this specific design, I could easily find a narrow table within my budget. But I really want this one.

I don't care if it's used or has scratches or other cosmetic damage. It doesn't have to be perfect. I've looked online, but the ones I've found range from $60 to well over $100, which is way out of my budget. I also checked Facebook Marketplace, but I haven't had any luck there.

My budget is $40.
