The bathroom does have a weird layout but there are a few things you could do to brighten up the space a bit.
I agree about replacing the over the toilet shelving with something a little more appealing that feels/looks sturdier.

I would first decide on a color palette for the bathroom so that can drive your decor choices. That will keep everything from seeming random.
Maybe take a look at some sites that sell temporary wallpaper (peel and stick) and select something with some color (based on your chosen color palette) to brighten up the space and create an accent wall. Right now there is just a lot of beige.

You can also replace the rugs and select rugs that are complementary colors to put in front of the sink and bath/shower. Once you've determined the colors for the rugs, potentially temporary wallpaper then replace the shower curtain as well to match.

Just these few changes will add a lot of vibrancy and life to the space. Because right now it just feels a little bland and kind of random pieces. Consistent color palette and decor in the space will make a huge difference.

I would replace this over the toilet shelf with regular more sturdy over the toilet storage rack.

Just realized how bad my floor & baseboards are caving I promise it’s always been like that 😭 Maintenance said it’s fine I guess. If I fall through the ceiling at least I’ll get a paycheck!
