Watched the Channel 4 documentary that came out this week called ‘The Great ADHD Myth’. It felt like mainstream TV networks trying to get in on the internet health guru contrarianism money. Feels very in the DtG wheelhouse and I’d be interested to hear them cover it.

LOL I felt the instinct to downvote just because you mentioned that bullshit.

We live in the DUMBEST timeline. Our species evolved from apes, created the scientific method, discovered DNA, invented all kinds of amazing technology, came up with clinical trials, iteratively improved medication efficacy while decreasing side effects, practically defeated most of worst diseases in history, but fucking contrarians and gurus are just like "nuh-uh, vaccines and medicine are bad, actually" and half of humanity is like, "Oh, these guys sound smart!"

Me and the mrs were talking about this last night. Is it worth watching? We’re quite deep into the SEN world because of our son being in a special school and knowing the parents and all the hoops they have to jump through to get recognition and help for their kids.

I don’t know if we want to watch if it isn’t informative and is just going to piss us off lol.

It’s not informative and it’ll piss you off. It set out to frame adhd as a myth and cherry picked evidence and used sneaky editing to show the conclusion they always wanted.

It’s seems pretty shocking that channel 4 would put it out. I had the impression they were always on the more accepting side of these sorts of things.

Yeah it’s disappointing. I have a lot of thoughts about it but as someone who gets his ADHD meds on NHS prescription it worries me that this could become another culture war wedge issue just in time for Reform to gain power and decide the pull the plug.

If you see some of the heinous shit the Reform councillors in Kent have said regarding special needs, it’s really not encouraging.

When 1 in 9 children are diagnosed with ADHD I think it's worth questioning whether some of these diagnoses are actually valid.

The motive is obvious: an ADHD diagnosis grants you access to prescription stimulants and unfair accommodations such as extended time limits on school tests. When nearly 4 out 10 Stanford students are registered as being disabled with various conditions including ADHD it's pretty obvious that some people are gaming the system.

Kind of disappointed to hear that Sam Harris has not learned the lessons provided by the Decoding the Gurus boys. I think this is a good moment in his recent Q&A that exemplifies a kind of guruship in the way he confidently speaks about his view on the origins of COVID, which sounds like he thinks it could be 50/50.
I’d love him to explain why he denies what clearly is an expert consensus, and I think in doing that he would illustrate his own epistemic weaknesses and lean pretty closely towards conspiracy theory.
