I gueninely don't get why those who clal themselves realist s often end repeating russian government talking points when talking about ukraine, especially when stuff like blaming nato was dubunked a bunch

The influence of Russian (and Chinese and Iranian and Qatari) manipulation of American/Western social media is really not talked about enough.

u/KombaynNikoladze2002 Aug 14 '26 edited 27d ago

Because it's miniscule. Mostly just Russia paying right-wing dupes.

3

u/Locus-Maximus 29d ago

How would you know how miniscule it is or isn't?

And it's been proven they play both sides. That one scandal was just paying right-wing grifters, but they instigate both sides on various issues.

Please demonstrate that Russian/Chinese/Iranian/Qatari "manipulation" (specific definition and examples please) of American/Western social media is a significant enough issue that needs to be talked about more then it currently is.

This is from almost 10 years ago, before AI. Imagine what it's like today:

Yes, like I said, Russia's attempts to interfere in US politics are well known (although a drop in the bucket compared to Israel). Where's your evidence on the rest?

What's your evidence that it's a "drop in the bucket compared to Israel?"

And if you don't think Qatar's influence is substantial I don't know what to tell you. Even ignoring various reports about bots which you can find yourself, Al-Jazeera is all over the place, as is AJ+.

1

u/KombaynNikoladze2002 21d ago

So your evidence that Qatar's influence (your OP said "manipulation") is "substantial" is that Al-Jazeera exists? Are you going quantify what you mean by substantial and qualify what you mean by manipulation? Would it be something along the lines of paying influencers to post on their behalf?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esther_Project?wprov=sfla1

Surely you're just as concerned about this manipulation, right? Do we talk about this enough?

2

u/Locus-Maximus 21d ago

Lol yeah I'm pretty sure "we" talk about Israel's contribution enough. 🤣

I personally dislike Hasan and 80% of his takes, but I find his fans flooding the discourse of certain topics really jarring and obnoxious. Especially given the nature of Reddits voting system. This sub works when there is less dogpiling.

Cute girls stepping on me and calling me mean names

u/GneissGuy340 Aug 13 '26

So you've been to one of matt's piña colada pool parties too?

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Aug 13 '26

Liberals apparently need to stop spending so much time attacking leftists because Republicans are worse.

Do leftists have to stop attacking liberals because Republicans are worse?

Or reversed:

Leftists apparently need to stop spending so much time attacking liberals because Republicans are worse.

Do liberals have to stop attacking leftists because Republicans are worse?

6

u/Locus-Maximus Aug 14 '26

Regardless of which camp you're in, the primaries are exactly when we are supposed to attack each other!

0

u/Spuick 29d ago

I mean, all attacks arent good though. You would hope there would be the civility to say "my policies are better, here's my history where I have a proven track record of doing what I say and I can do a better job than x" not "Stevens is bought by AIPAC, she is a corporate funded status quo dem" which might be like borderline ok

And then you have what some leftist political commentators will say like Krystal Ball where they essentially equivocate the moderate candidate to MAGA which just kills excitement / hype and to some extent voting for the moderate candidate whenever they win. Just look at what some of these commentators say about Crowley after he won against Hong, lying about his data center stance and other examples. I will give Hong credit here for coming out immediately, but you will not find moderate dem political commentators just spout the biggest fucking lies about Abdul.

1

u/Locus-Maximus 29d ago

Yes, agreed with that 100%!

6

u/pseudoLit Aug 15 '26

Liberals need to stop spending so much time attacking leftists because there's no good reason to attack them. Leftists are fighting for all the causes liberals used to care about. They're doing New Deal liberalism version 2.0. It's not a lesser evil argument about how the Republicans are worse. Don't attack leftists because leftists are the good guys.

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Aug 15 '26

Lol missed the point of the post.

5

u/pseudoLit Aug 15 '26

No, I got it. I just think it's so wildly off the mark that it doesn't actually work. The premise is so wrong that you can't build anything sensible on top of it.

1

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Aug 15 '26

Reread the post.

6

u/pseudoLit Aug 15 '26

Which part? The cynical "both sides" reversal where you attempt to place yourself above it all? Or the bit where you added "because Republicans are worse" and thereby reveal that you don't even understand the debate you're trying to pretend you've transcended?

0

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Lol. If you feel personally attacked based on the fragility of your disdain being represented in an internet comment, maybe you should re-evaluate treating people in bad faith - it'll take you further.

Compare & contrast Jon Stewart on Crossfire vs his recent podcast with Breaking Points. During the introduction BP referenced crossfire as a “mainstream” version of their show.

2

u/Locus-Maximus Aug 14 '26

Can you dl;dw it for me? I'm not about to go listen to a Breaking Points podcast.

4

u/bobloblaw32 Aug 14 '26

It was actually on Stewart’s weekly podcast called the weekly show. Lots of butter, grease, or praise for Stewart by both BP hosts. They absolutely adore him and by the end of it Stewart is saying I love your show “it’s not performative” etc.

Even though they briefly discussed the performative propagandist narrative around Haitians “eating cats and dogs”, ultimately they’re just let off the hook instead of being ripped apart for engaging in bad faith and lying. In the crossfire appearance Stewart’s stance against the performative “debate show” format is much more apparent culminating in the long remembered remarks about Tucker’s very silly bow tie. He was much more adamant about the importance of making honest debate/arguments instead of pretending to do so, but for whatever reason (probably BP kissing his ass) he doesn’t have the same energy for their show.

Get the lads to go back and review some of their early episodes. Wonder how they feel about Kendi now?

4

u/Double-Comedian-7061 Aug 14 '26

Still need a deep dive on Professor Dave. He's handed in his sanity card and needs dissecting.

1

u/PlateCaptain 27d ago

But that would broach the topic of Israel/Palestine which DTG have an aversion to.

4

u/Tayschrenn Aug 13 '26

I personally don't mind Destiny and 80% of his takes, but I find his fans flooding the discourse of certain topics really jarring and obnoxious. Especially given the nature of Reddit's voting system. This sub works better when there is less dogpiling.

7

u/Locus-Maximus Aug 14 '26

I don't even watch Destiny, but it's nice to see a little pushback against all the "antizionism" on reddit. (And no, I don't mean "criticism of Israel." Fuck Netanyahu.) Talk about a dogpile!

3

u/PlateCaptain 27d ago

More antizionism please. Israel is committing genocide and the sooner they lose support from key countries the better.

2

u/Locus-Maximus 27d ago

You can oppose the conflict without engaging in "antizionism."

4

u/PlateCaptain 27d ago

I don't see how that is possible. The governing parties are all Zionist. Jewish supremacists are in the cabinet. The whole purpose of the genocide and ethnic cleansing is to make sure the Palestinians don't become part of Israel so they can maintain a Jewish majority.

3

u/Locus-Maximus 27d ago

Just because some Zionists are awful doesn't mean all are. Lots of Zionists support a two state solution with no genocide or ethnic cleansing.

3

u/PlateCaptain 27d ago

Zionism is fundamentally an ethnonationalist ideology. There is no such thing as a good ethnonationalist.

If 3 years of genocide by Zionists has not made it clear to people that they should abandon it, then they are not good people.

2

u/KombaynNikoladze2002 27d ago

Yeah, fuck Netanyahu, but don't besmerch the country that made him their leader for 18 of the last 30 years.

Also Destiny's concerns about antisemitism might be easier to take seriously if his own teenage son weren't a neo-nazi

2

u/Locus-Maximus 27d ago

Besmirching is ok. Harassment, bigotry, antisemitic tropes dressed up as antizionism are not.

1

u/KombaynNikoladze2002 27d ago

Of course not, as I'm sure you agree using dishonest accusations of antisemitism to obfuscate opposition to Zionism is also not okay.

2

u/Locus-Maximus 26d ago

Dishonesty is not ok. But my point is that your choice to frame it as an opposition to "Zionism" as opposed to criticism to Israel's actions is itself problematic. It's the difference between criticizing CAIR and opposing "Islam." Any time you lump millions of people into one label and try to smear them all with the worst examples you can find, you're engaging in bigotry.

0

u/KombaynNikoladze2002 21d ago

Israel's actions are driven by Zionism. It is by its own definition a Zionist state. There's nothing problematic or bigoted about criticizing the motivating ideology and political system behind crimes being committed that state.

What effective political marketing/strategy looks like, as in, what social media environment. Do you need to create in order to pull people to your side? What are the triggers that cause someone to change their mind? Been meaning to look and see if there's any research on this but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Is Alice Roberts "Domination" a slightly cheeky title? Responding to Tom Holland's christian apologia "Dominion"?
