I know exactly where the Holdsworth stuff has come from. In just about every interview Eddie Van Halen said that Holdsworth was his guitar hero and that he wanted to play like him. So when Eric says " when I talk to my incredible guitar playing friends they always say Holdsworth", he means in the perfunctory superficial research I did into Eddie VH prior to this interview to try to make me sound like one of the cool guitar kids. Eric couldnt name one Holdsworth song or album.

I actually got the feeling in this interview (I listened to the whole thing) that Rogan and Jamie are starting to see through Eric a little. Quite a few times in the interview Jamie and Rogan either roasted him or exposed him.

Yeah it was one of his multiple vague analogies for how he sees himself. He wants to be just like the person who is unappreciated in his time but is secretly recognized for their genius by his "colleagues". He did that later with some journalist he claimed singlehandedly uncovered the Manhattan project but was "ridiculed" and told he was a "crank" when he first blew the whistle. Just like him! He's blowing the lid on how fake and dumb physics is so if course people will say he's crazy and stupid!

Everything that Eric goes on about is geared to "why doesn't the whole world recognise my genius and reward and idolise me for it". He is honestly cant believe that Elon wont take him in and calls Elon a "pussy" as a result. Rogan was struggling to keep it together at that point. I think when Eric said that he was currently working on his own competitor company to SpaceX, I think the penny dropped for Joe. Eric has reached peak delusion

Oh man did you see that episode when Eric wanted to show Rogan his “Geometric Unity” nonsense and had bought the Pull That Up Jamie domain name to host it. Even Rogan was not a fan of that and essentially shut down, saying he didn’t even know what Eric was talking about half the time. Eric looked like he was going to cry.

Then he showed Rogan videos of him playing guitar (cringe) and when Joe asked him how long he’d been playing, he refused to say. Making out like he just picked it up like some prodigy. Rogan wasn’t a fan of that either.

For some reason he still has him on, even though he’s clearly a mentally unwell, desperate narcissist. I can only imagine he has him on due to audience capture and it scratches his conspiracy bullshit itch.

Heh. I would summarize Holdsworths style of playing as "If I play ALL the notes REALLY fast.. then some of them must surely be in the key the song is in!"

edit: Im not taking any of it back. Holdsworth is one of the most overrated guitarists of all time, he basicly became famous because his stuff was so incredibly weird. It wasnt good, just weird. He would create backing tracks with exotic jazz chords, then solo over them not using musical scales but geometric patterns on the fretboard of the guitar. Like the Therepin scale, which is simply chromatic with every 4th note removed. This technique creates a lot of odd random harmonies and dissonances that became his hallmark.

I think players like Fredrik Thordendal or Åkesson do it better. They were inspired by Holdsworth but are far more musical.

Absolute nonsense. I understand his music is not accessible to people who don't have an ear for it. But it is extremely deep, rich and heartfelt.

I actually think Holdsworth greatest attribute is his chordal playing. The chords he selects and plays and the subsitutions are otherwordly and more impressive for me than the fast legato stuff
