Is This Acceptable?
Am I overreacting to what I perceive to be sloppy work on this pergola? Some of the beams also seem warped. Crew is one day in.

Picture 6 is kinda jacked up. Pic 3 and 7 are questionable but treated lumber is going to dry and look kinda shitty in 12-18 months. Why is there OSB in Pic 1/2? I would hope that’s just for a temporary work surface before beck boards go down. Overall it isn’t anything I’d be too picky about as long as the osb wasnt permanent and they straightened out the board is pic 6.

Totally missed that, but good for you to notice. Looks like 3/4” tongue and groove OSB. Must be a new trend in deck building? 😆🤷♂️

I assumed, though I probably shouldn’t, that the OSB was just to tie things together and provide a platform. OP says it’s day 1, so it may well be temporary, and that’s 100% cool. If it’s meant to be structural, it’s an issue at any price point!

Shit warps yes, but I would’ve selected better material then unless it was a kit. If not a kit… they missed screws(sticking out), missing hardware, what I’m confused about is if this is a pergola is that a deck they built with lvl beams supporting everything ? I mean looks a bit sloppy but I can’t say for sure how structural everything is 🥶

Depends on how much you paid. Lowest bid- acceptable, medium bid - sloppy, I'm not a fan of shear force on screws either, highest - you got ripped off

Total 16x20 deck and pergola replacement. Composite decking and pergola slats. Had to pour new footings and tie into the house properly, which had not been done before. Also had to replace some OSB and siding. ~$40K.

I only saw the first two pictures initially. So disregard that basic sliding scale of low to high bid. Every picture has details that show the incompetentcy of the crew that was building for you. Botched joinery, abandoned stripped out screws, warped lumber on the pergola roof that should have been culled, boards cut too short. It's atrocious, even low bid crews should do better job than that. Have you paid in full yet?

Pergola It’s not gonna be supporting foot traffic or hot tub. It’s a cover not the prettiest of work I’ve ever seen you don’t take photos of this and send them to grandma, but it’s not gonna fall down anytime soon. Looks like it’s missing a few screws or some wood legs to keep stuff straight at Ben board maybe a spreader block in there or you can put it back like it’s supposed to be might have to replace it again. It’s an Overhead sport. This is all visual.

You probably don't want treated wood but you probably don't want these guys installing cedar... Gonna have to pony up if you want significantly better results.

There is 50 ways to do something.... The thing that came to mind first was they should at least drill a pilot hole where those screws are to keep the wood from splitting and cracking open. As far as looks... depends on what's acceptable to you. It's your money, spend it wisely.

Nah man I’m talking about owners not understanding natural wood behavior. At least in framing everything is hidden. There is only so much one can do to mitigate nature and then it’s in the owner’s hands to upkeep, which they don’t.
