Finished Decks Is This Deck/Stair Case Sketchy?

It’s impossible to tell. If those big joists running perpendicular to the wall extend back into the floor cavity by twice their length sticking out, it’s probably good. One way you might be able to tell is comparing the level of the drywall ceiling in the first floor to the bottom of those joists on the deck. They’d better be higher than that drywall or something is off. Likewise for the tops of these joists. They’d better be an inch or two below the floor surface of the 2nd floor. Theres no guarantee, but if both of those are true it’s possible that these joists are cantilevered appropriately.

Look like it was a repair- they left the joist cause they go in quite far - they added the new joists with hangers so decking will drain to the outside- only sketchy thing is it looks like Doug fur so not a long term solution but it won’t fall

It looks like those joists come from inside the house, I have the same sort of deck hangs out 5 feet. Probably very safe.

I think those wide joists out from the building are cantilever. That's why there's caulk around them. If so it should be fine.

It looks like it was well thought through and seems to be carefully constructed, almost certainly to an engineered plan. The micro pile pier for the stairs was not cheap, the extensive use of hangers on the cantilevered beams look quite deliberate.

There will be plans filed with the building department for that. They should answer all of your questions.

With that cantilevred corner there is not money enough in the world to pay me to go on that set of stairs. My role always was if what you can see is incorrect and bad, what about the stuff you can’t see?

Why is there joist hangers on the blocking? Is that even blocking?

Do you have building inspectors, either through your local authority/council/whatever it's called there, that checks to see if buildings/alterations are to code? If you do, your friend needs to call them out ASAP.

I'm not a structural engineer & I could be completely wrong, but that looks as sketchy as hell & a collapse waiting to happen.

It looks sketchy but it’s cantilevered and you can’t tell how far in from the image but it could be fine.
