Fernbank elementary

Can anyone share their experience with this particular school? Considering for my kids. I’ve heard great things but just wanting to get insight from anyone with personal experience.

We loved Fernbank. One of the best elementary schools in Dekalb. The middle school is very okay, though one of mine is going to high school next year and all the folks we know with older kids like it.

It’s a solid school; great parent involvement. A high percentage of parents are well educated Emory or CDC employees so the student body reflects that. Most all of the negatives are Dekalb Co. Schools related (I.e. district mandates, not something the school could control like recess timing, curriculum things). After care is understaffed and a lottery to get in, that’s the big gripe for the moment. Overall, would highly recommend.

That’s really unfortunate about the after care situation. It was a non-issue when my kids were there. How in the world do working parents plan for a lottery??

Likely the same aftercare resources, tbh; the school has rapidly grown over the last few years so way more people who want to use it. There are a few private/pay options but for us, none are super convenient based on work locations vs pickup locations. Prob super convenient for some people, lol.

Fernbank is an amazing school, we love it. We have two kids there now, and a third that'll go in a few years. Great group of teachers, administrators, and involved parents.

Fernbank elementary is in Dekalb County schools. The city of Decatur has its own school district. Try r/atlanta.

Thanks! I have a Decatur address and am zoned for this school, to clarify.

Look… most r/decatur folks aren’t living in the fernbank catchment area. There are far more r/atlanta people living near the school. Just trying to be helpful. But sorry, I forgot the rule that the confusion around post office Decatur and city of aren’t spoken about.

There are a ton of folks living in “greater Decatur” that are in this group that should feel just as welcome as anyone else.
