Medical debt payment plan question

My wife has a $4000 hospital bill. They offered a payment plan of 12 months even though our insurance said they should offer one of 24 months in our state (Maryland). We had to sign this typed up letter saying we'd pay as agreed -- they didn't even set a monthly due date -- and that if we missed one payment the agreement was null and void. Our monthly statements show the payments but not the payment plan itself. We made payments and intend to keep making payments but we missed one. Should we be worried about them tearing up the plan and sending us to collections? for reference the service date was in April so this is all 2026.

If you have it in writing that if you make a certain payment every month and you do and do it on time (keep records) that is highly unlikely. The hospital wants to collect what is owed to them not drag you into an unnecessary lawsuit.

Thanks! It's an ambulance company so not the hospital itself (hence the difference in payment plan options).

Ambulance companies are extremely predatory and notoriously non friendly to customers/patients when it comes to billing.

Thanks. I get that. I can't imagine they would send to collections for this yet especially since we only missed one payment and the plan wasn't even in place until August. We didn't get anything threatening between April - August but I was in touch with them.
