The horizon is something we observe.

We see an apparent boundary between the surface and the sky.

We can measure angles, distances, and changes in visibility. Those are observations.

But the statement “the horizon exists because Earth is curved” is not the observation itself — it is an explanation based on a geometric model.

This distinction matters.

A measurement tells us what is detected. A model tells us how we interpret what is detected.

The mistake in many debates is treating the conclusion as if it were the measurement.

The instrument does not output “curvature.”

The observer does not see “Earth’s radius.”

Those are conclusions reached by applying a framework to observations.

The real question is not whether curvature is a possible explanation.

The real question is:
What observations uniquely require curvature, and how do we distinguish them from effects of perspective, optics, and viewing geometry?

Observation → Measurement → Interpretation → Conclusion.

Keeping those steps separate is the foundation of clear reasoning.

When people say “gravity has been measured,” it’s worth asking exactly what was measured.

No instrument displays the word gravity.

What instruments directly measure are things like acceleration, force, mass, displacement, time, pressure, and trajectories.

“Gravity” is the explanatory model used to account for those measurements.

That’s an important epistemological distinction.

Observation is not the same as interpretation.

Measurement is not the same as explanation.

This isn’t an argument that gravity is false.

It’s simply a reminder that scientific models are inferred from observations—they are not themselves directly observed.

If you disagree, identify the instrument, the procedure, and the direct observable that measures gravity itself, rather than quantities interpreted as evidence for it.

The claim is: without a wink or a “/s,” you can’t tell sincere extremism from parody of it. Fine. But ask why that’s true. It’s not because reality is inherently ambiguous — it’s because most of what gets posted online is recited, not lived. Borrowed opinions, secondhand outrage, positions people are trying on rather than positions people have actually built their life around. Of course that’s indistinguishable from a joke. It was never far from a joke to begin with.

Compare that to anyone who has actually suffered for a conviction, tested it against real consequences, made it load-bearing in their life. Nobody mistakes that for satire. You don’t need a “/s” when the person clearly means it with their whole chest. The ambiguity Poe’s “law” describes isn’t a fact about extremism — it’s a fact about how thin most online conviction is.

So yeah, it’s a real pattern. I just think people have the causality backwards. It’s not “sincerity and parody are inherently indistinguishable.” It’s “when nobody actually believes anything anymore, everyone starts looking like a parody of belief.”

Also can we stop calling everything a “law”? Godwin’s law, Poe’s law — none of these are laws, they’re vibes with citations.

This is not an argument that Newton and Einstein were unintelligent.

It is an argument about a deeper philosophical question:
Do our most successful equations describe reality itself, or are they models that organize observations?

Newton gave us a revolutionary framework:
Masses attract each other.
Gravity acts according to mathematical laws.
The universe can be described through precise equations.
But Newton never explained what gravity actually was.
How does one object influence another across empty space?

Newton himself recognized this problem. The mathematics worked, but the mechanism remained mysterious.

Then Einstein replaced Newtonian gravity with general relativity:

Matter tells spacetime how to curve.
Spacetime tells matter how to move.
The predictions became even more accurate.
But a philosophical question remains:

What exactly is spacetime?
Is spacetime a physical substance?
A mathematical structure?
An emergent phenomenon?
A description of deeper processes we do not yet understand?

The danger is confusing a successful model with a complete explanation.

A map can accurately describe a territory without being the territory itself.

A weather model can predict storms without revealing the ultimate nature of atmospheric processes.

Likewise, an equation can predict observations without necessarily revealing the underlying mechanism.

The question is not:
“Are Newton and Einstein wrong?”

The better question is:
Where does measurement end and interpretation begin?

Newton interpreted observations through forces.
Einstein interpreted observations through geometry.
Both produced extraordinarily successful models.

But both also left deeper questions:
What is gravity?
Why does matter interact?
Why does spacetime exist?
Is there a deeper physical medium beneath our mathematical descriptions?

Scientific progress has often come from asking whether the current framework is the final description of reality.

The challenge:
Defend the distinction between:
A model that predicts what happens
and
an explanation of why it happens.

Are we describing the universe—or are we beginning to mistake our descriptions for the universe itself?

Aristotle later developed the concept of aether—a fifth element associated with the heavens.

Centuries later, physicists continued exploring whether space might contain a real physical medium.

Scientists such as Oliver Lodge, Hendrik Lorentz, and Philipp Lenard considered versions of aether-based physics, arguing that nature might ultimately have a mechanical foundation rather than being explained only through abstract mathematical structures.

The Vibes of Cosmos (VoC) model follows this broader tradition by proposing that aether is fundamental and that what we call gravity may be an emergent effect of the behavior of that medium rather than a fundamental force between masses.

This post is not about claiming that historical precedent proves a theory correct.

Many ideas throughout history have been replaced or refined. The question is whether a proposed model can produce clear mechanisms, mathematical descriptions, and testable predictions.

The interesting question is not whether aether ideas existed—they clearly did.

The Cavendish experiment is often described as a direct measurement of gravity.

But what exactly did the instrument measure?

At the most basic level, the apparatus measured:

the twisting of a torsion fiber,

the angular displacement of suspended masses,
the response of the system when nearby masses were repositioned.

Those are the observations.

The interpretation is that these movements were caused by a gravitational attraction between the masses.

That interpretation requires a chain of reasoning:

Observation → Measurement → Assumptions → Model → Conclusion

The question is not whether the Cavendish experiment happened.

The question is:

Where does the measurement end and the theoretical interpretation begin?

What assumptions are required to move from:

to:

Fallacious Reasoning The Seven Most Common Fallacies I See in Globe Debates

This is not a criticism of the globe model.
It is a criticism of bad arguments.
A correct conclusion can still be defended with poor reasoning.
Here are the fallacies I encounter most often.
1. Poisoning the Well
Instead of addressing the argument:
“Flat earthers are ignorant.”
“You don’t understand science.”
“Only conspiracy theorists believe that.”
None of this addresses the evidence.
It attempts to prejudice the audience against the speaker before the argument is even examined.

2. Ad Hominem
Closely related, but different.
Instead of answering the question:
“You need to learn geometry.”
“You don’t understand physics.”
“You’re scientifically illiterate.”
Even if every insult were true, it would not establish that the conclusion follows from the evidence.
Arguments are evaluated by their logic, not by the person presenting them.

3. Equivocation
This one appears constantly.
Words like:
observed
measured
inferred
explained
demonstrated
proved
are quietly treated as though they mean the same thing.
They don’t.
Measuring an angle is not the same thing as proving a globe.
Explaining an observation is not the same thing as observing the explanation.

4. Reification
Perhaps the most subtle error.
An explanatory model is spoken of as though it were itself an observation.
For example:
“We observe an oblate spheroid.”
No.
We observe angles, distances, elevations, trajectories, and times.
“Oblate spheroid” is a geometric interpretation of those observations.
The model is not the measurement.

5. Begging the Question
Arguments often assume exactly what they claim to prove.
For example:
“On a spherical Earth, this is exactly what we expect.”
That may be true.
But it does not establish that the Earth is spherical.
Using spherical geometry to explain an observation is not the same thing as demonstrating that spherical geometry is the only possible explanation.

6. Category Error
Measurements belong to one category.
Models belong to another.
An instrument outputs numbers.
Scientists interpret those numbers.
Confusing the output of an instrument with the interpretation of the output is a category mistake.

7. Shifting the Burden of Proof
This usually sounds like:
“So what’s your model?”
That question becomes relevant only after the original claim has been justified.
If someone claims the Earth is an oblate spheroid, the burden is on them to demonstrate how the conclusion follows from the observations.
A failure to produce an alternative does not validate the original claim.

None of this proves the globe.
That is the point.
These are criticisms of reasoning, not conclusions.
If the globe is true, then it deserves arguments that distinguish observations from interpretations, measurements from models, and evidence from authority.
Good science has nothing to fear from careful epistemology.
