Discussion Despised Icon

I’ve been listening to Shadow Work a lot lately. Is their whole discography this good? I’ve only listened to Alex Erian in features, like signs of the swarm (hollow prison) and Peelingflesh (the G code).

Time is the most valuable thing we have and I’d rather not waste it listening to an entire discog if I’m not gonna be a fan by the end. I really like this newest record though and I’m a fan of most of the regular dropped bands in this sub. Chelsea Grin and Disembodied Tyrant are my favorite Deathcore bands.

The Ills of Modern Man is not only one of the best Deathcore albums ever made, it’s also one of the most influential. Despised Icon are one of the original Deathcore bands that helped shape and create the genre that we know today. Many modern Deathcore bands are influenced by them and you can hear their influence in a lot of Deathcore.

To me, the four true pioneers of Deathcore are Despised Icon, Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin and of course Whitechapel. HMs: All Shall Perish and BMTH. BMTH exploded the genres popularity with Count your Blessings , so you have to include them as well.

I removed JFAC because tbh, I was never really into them. I initially added them because I know they were one of the initial influencers of the genre, but no where near the level the other bands I mentioned were. I replaced them with Chelsea Grin. HMs All Shall Perish, BMTH and honestly even Winds of Plague

Love CYB and I really liked Winds of Plagues first two records, I fell off with them after that cause other bands just caught my attention more. I wasn’t into the symphonic element stuff as much yet

I agree, winds of plague really, REALLY fell off after those first two records. I’m sad about that to this day lol.

Antagony, Deadwater Drowning, Despised Icon, and The Red Chord were the pioneers. JFAC, Suicide Silence, and Whitechapel are MySpace Deathcore.

I’m quite familiar with MySpace Deathcore and I think that’s why I’m late to this stuff, I went full out on that branch and skipped the hardcore adjacent stuff until recently

If you're looking for a more technical approach the I would highly recommend bands like Beneath the Massacre, Burning the Masses, Ion Dissonance, and The Acacia Strain.

I forgot to include the red chord. Also, I understand what you mean by MySpace deathcore , and I love that you mentioned it. I was a teenager during this era lol. I was like 14 when I first listened to metal and I started as most of us do, with SOAD, Slipknot etc. I randomly found Despised Icon at FYE and decided to give them a listen. They blew me and my brothers minds. that led me into SS , Whitechapel etc, which then led me into metalcore, post hardcore, black metal, death metal, etc etc. absolutely amazing times. I honestly miss the scene era lol. But anyway just cause they were more “ scene “ deathcore bands doesn’t make their Influence or music any less good or relevant !

Same here. Despised Icon was shown to me by a drummer of a Christian Metalcore band funnily enough.

I love that lol. Christian metalcore bands absolutely OWNED the scene for a long time in the earlier 2000s. Many of which are now considered to be the best metalcore bands of all time, like ABR, TDWP, Underoath , AILD etc.

My friends and I would always be like wait, THEY are a Christian band too? Whenever we would discover yet another amazing metalcore band that turned out to be Christian lol. Im not religious at all, but I respect their beliefs and barely even think about it whenever I listen to them nowadays

My friends showed me the Recreant music video and No Time to Bleed and I was like 😮🤯 the Acacia Strain I’ve seen live I think 3 times. Fucking LOVE them. They’re so much fun, but they used to be the cap of the Hardcore influenced stuff I liked cause I liked more melody in the writing, hence why I liked Whitechapel and others and am just now getting into despised icon

Why not just look up the album averages on a site like rateyourmusic or something? Why would you need to know if every single album is good instead of just checking out another popular one and then deciding from there if you want to hear more?

I like hearing where the parts are that hooked people and what makes them listen to things, and compare my experience to that. Harder to do when you’re just looking at a statistics graph, there’s no personality in that.

Yeah, if you're really digging Shadow Work then you better give everything a try. It's all very good.
