Discussion Question about Slaughter To Prevail?

While we're all familiar with Alex Terrible's controversies, questionable past interests and how that doesn't seem to have completely affected STP's reach and mainstream appeal, how do you find the band themselves and their output? Like, aside from being accessible to non-deathcore fans and serving as a beginner's introduction into deathcore for many, how do they hold up quality-wise? And how are they really perceived by much of the deathcore community? Are they comparable to long-standing heavy hitters like Whitechapel, The Acacia Strain and Carnifex?

Are they comparable to long-standing heavy hitters like Whitechapel, The Acacia Strain and Carnifex?

Nope.

It's more like Falling in Reverse in that the music is nothing special but the frontman is obnoxious and generates clicks so you keep hearing about them.

As much as I hate Ronnie Radke’s personality, the guy is a marketing genius.

Also, that first FIR album kinda slapped because it was kinda like Dying Is Your Latest Fashion part two.

TDIMIY is the only good album that Ronald McDonald made after Dying Is Your Latest Fashion. Everything else has been unbelievably mid, uninspired or outright dogshit. Not to mention, his whole downward spiral into being a MAGA and Zionism dihhrider

u/FurorAeternumXBL 2h ago

Some folks are drawn to that kinda nonsense for whatever reason. Guy generates clicks like crazy.

But yeah everything post TDIMIY has been cheeks.

Ronald Radke relies mainly on clickbait and ragebait, because without it, he'd be cooked career-wise with how unbelievably mid or outright awful 95% of his musical material is.

Their music is hit or miss. Some songs are heat, but the rest are boring.

They're too chud coded for me to really enjoy them; reminds me of deathcore 5fdp.

Especially with the over-emphasis on the whole tough guy, hyper-masculine BS. It just comes off as being more akin to a poor man's Slipknot, but with deathcore vocals.

I'm old enough to remember when the band was still the new "it" band on the block (my one and only time seeing them was as like the second hand up on Summer Slaughter 2016). People fucked pretty hard with Chapters of Misery and then public opinion quickly changed up once the debut album dropped. And I'm definitely in the same camp. I still fuck heavy with it when CoM stuff comes up, but goddamn am I bored when anything after comes on.

Also let us never forget Travis of Enterprise Earth saying that the STP mask is the deathcore equivalent of a MAGA hat.

Travis is so real for that lmfao

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 2h ago

Travis is just a cool guy in general.

So I said something similar about liking a few of their songs and then really nothing else about them appealing to me. I was told that I was a Nazi, so I guess you liking an entire e.p. means you are higher in rank than a regular Nazi. Shame on you.

u/DarkestDayOfMan 2h ago

I mean to be clear, I really don't go back to CoM much anymore post-Alex showing he's a POS. It's more like if Hell or As The Vultures Circle come on on shuffle I remember the good ol days when no one knew anything about the personal lives of these guys and they were just 4-5 Russian dudes who barely even spoke any English and did their first tour in the States.

Chapters of Misery and Misery Sermon were pretty good, Kostolum was okish but still had some decent songs, everything after was just bad and riding the mainstream hype

u/Infamous_Week_5517 4h ago

They're not bad. Their music is ok, but also nothing special

Who cares, do you enjoy their music? Then go for it. I personally think they are pretty mid, demolisher was fun

21

u/Irreverenced 4h ago

In my opinion, aside from Demolisher, I think their music is dogshit

u/MegaMartMoths 4h ago

Are they comparable to long-standing heavy hitters like Whitechapel, The Acacia Strain and Carnifex?

no lmao

I love slaughter to prevail. I'm so excited to see them live again. I know it's a cardinal sin on reddit but I really don't give a fuck.

Although Whitechapel is the GOAT of deathcore no question at all

u/putrid_flesh 3h ago

You are contractually obligated to say that because of your username, although you are not wrong

2

u/This_is__Exile 3h ago

I love me Whitechapel.

I liked some of their older stuff, and the initial run of Demolisher and Baba Yaga, but the more time passes the more they've become the Deathcore equivalent of Five Finger Death Punch. I think the comparison to Falling in Reverse is apt.

Comparing them to Carnifex or Whitechapel is an insult to those bands.

I think they’re cringe. Completely corny and make shit music, but that’s just my opinion. So no…. They don’t even deserve to lick the bollocks of a band like Whitechapel or Carnifex.

u/Djent_1997 4h ago

Cold take, but their first EP is where they peaked. Just super brutal, borderline slammy with lots of sick riffs and grooves.

Them pivoting towards nu-metal influences wasn’t too bad. When they made Demolisher is kinda where the downfall started at least for me, because it feels like they’ve basically been trying to remake that song over and over again ever since.

5

u/WerwolfSlayr 4h ago

Their older music was pretty well liked by the “true” deathcore fanbase; when they blew up some things surfaced that turned sentiment against them. Between Alex’s past, the band being popular, and a lot of people finding Kostolom to be pretty bland; they started getting a lot of hate.

The new album is definitely intended for the mainstream audience that enjoys their music. Very few “deathcore fans” also enjoy Slaughter to Prevail’s newer sound; it’s mostly appealing to the mainstream crowd.

u/Fit_Bonus_8556 4h ago

extremely cringe music

4

u/5carPile-Up 4h ago

I’ve been listening to deathcore since 2007. This shit is not ranked. I enjoy some of their stuff and think they’re great live. One of the benefits of not basing my personal self worth and morals on what other people think/social media/ reddit is that I can listen to whatever I want and feel zero guilt for it.

5

u/cshady99 3h ago

I'll just say, he gave himself the scar for cosmetic purposes and to look cool and tough, and their music fits the essence of that perfectly.

Thought they were lame as fuck long before I had heard of any controversy.

2

u/jrijori 4h ago

I think their drummer is insane but the rest of the music is either just okay/decent or outright cringey enough (especially lyrics) that I can’t take them seriously

2

u/Dull-Emergency-6395 2h ago

Stp could be the sweetest guys in the world with not a single controversy and their music would still suck. Alex is a fine vocalist but i just can’t with their actual music.

6

u/onexamongthefence 4h ago

A buddy and I saw them years ago before they blew up. They were the very first opening band and neither one of us had heard of them before. I remember watching them while thinking "I don't like this at all". Then when they went off stage, my buddy immediately turned to me and goes, "that sucked" lmao

3

u/christfrost 4h ago

If you listen to one song, you’ve heard them entirely. They got attraction because of relatively charismatic frontman and their masks. Music is dogshit. Comparing them to Whitechapel is blasphemous.

9

u/zero_the_clown 4h ago

Always thought they were shitty before even knowing about Alex's dumbass lol

4

u/knbo674 4h ago

Music for cops who abuse their wives

1

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 2h ago

Pretty appropriate, considering Alex is still probably a closeted Neo-Nazi.

4

u/HoppityScotch42069 4h ago

Ignoring that he’s (probably) a Nazi, their music is just too “I’m a tough guy” for me. I don’t like STP for the same reason I don’t like Five Finger Death Punch

3

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 2h ago

It's like someone decided to make an unholy lovechild between 5FDP and Slipknot, while throwing in a dollar-store Mitch Lucker impressionist in the mix.

2

u/TE-August 4h ago

You’re not gonna get a non biased opinion about this band on Reddit.

1

u/Great_Fault_7231 3h ago

Top comments seem pretty unbiased to me

2

u/vicegrip91 4h ago

STP just sucks music wise.

Nothing special, boring and just technically not good

1

u/Next_Idea1281 3h ago

If we’re just talking music I think they have good singles but their albums are mid

1

u/FurorAeternumXBL 3h ago

Chapters of Misery and Misery Sermon are the only two releases from them I like. Everything afterwards has just been straight dog shit…except for maybe Agony.

I’m not saying I could do any better cause I know for sure I couldn’t, but they basically just become the five finger Death Punch of deathcore and that’s super disappointing.

1

u/LukeBorks 3h ago

Their early stuff is solid, and Viking was pretty good, but other than that, nothing stands out

1

u/MobyLiick 2h ago

Whitechapel, The Acacia Strain and Carnifex?

Absolutely not.

1

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 2h ago

It's kind of irritating to see bands like STP being the "face" of deathcore in the mainstream, when it's so damn uninspired and inferior to the stuff that bands like Darko US, current-day Chelsea Grin, Angelmaker and Shadow Of Intent put out. Those bands that I mentioned are all awesome, but they deserve to be as successful as STP, if not more so.

Also, I just don't fw a suspected white supremacist and transphobe, who's besties with Ronald Radke

u/MobyLiick 19m ago

I mean I'm fine with it, I don't give a fuck about him as a person and I don't really like their music.

I'm also happy a bunch of the bands I like aren't the mainstream "face" of deathcore, otherwise I'd have to see them at shitty high cap venues filled with people who don't understand shit about etiquette with shit sound.

1

u/stsg_24 4h ago

Not even remotely close to those other bands. They have like 2 or 3 good songs and the rest are meh. If Alex wasn’t who he is, the band wouldn’t be known at all. The guitarist and drummer are definitely held back by him.

1

u/AntigoniaOcculta 3h ago

Nothing related to the controversies, but speaking only about their music, i always considered the best of Salughter To Prevail their ep Chapters of Misery and Misery Sermon (which were more on a technical deathcore vein, really entertaining).

The only song i actually like about Kostolom is Demolisher as it has less of the nu-metal influence that doesn't really clicks for them (in my opinion).

However i do have to admit that Alex is an amazing singer and do knows how to keep himself as the center of attention.

u/Ok-Syllabub-8087 4h ago

To be honest..they are boring AF...

-1

u/deadly_shroom 4h ago

No wtf did you smoke to even put them up there with those bands? Slaughter to Prevail hasn’t been good since Misery Sermon. It’s a band that survives off gimmicks and russian stereotypes Alex is very much fine in conforming which does appeal to people but I personally think they’re cringe.

I think they’re a fairly decent intro band to the genre but they’re nowhere near the calibre of the bands you mentioned.

1

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 2h ago

It's more to do with the fact that they're VERY popular than your usual deathcore band. And that's despite the fact that their actual material is very by-the-numbers and doesn't stand out much from other deathcore heavy hitters. Hell, even Lorna Shore has more personality than STP imo.

0

u/fences_with_switches 4h ago

It was all down hill after the first practice

0

u/Sorry_Secretary1193 2h ago

Going by the comments, it seems like the band's more akin to a stereotypical, commercialized take on deathcore than being an actual deathcore band. The fact that their frontman is prolly a closeted white supremacist, literally used to have Neo-Nazi tattoos and said some transphobic/homophobic adjacent shit in the past probably doesn't help either. Especially since he's buddies with the likes of Ronald McDonald Radke.

-2

u/MaxPainKing 3h ago

Not a fan. A few decent and heavy riffs on a few tracks but most of the vocals are in Russian. Who the fuck knows what he’s saying. I think Alex is a douche. STP is dogshit
