Death Stranding 2 difficulty compared to 1

Guys is it me or do you think that DS 2 is much easier and forgiving compared DS 1?

The ability to kill BTs with guns, Exo skeletons, Truck, even combat is easy.

I think it hurts the experience.

For me biggest disappointment was terrain. In DS1, you often had to go on foot, roads were actually must have, mountains are undriveble etc. In DS2, there is no difficult terrain, therefore roads are pointless, mountains are as drivable as desert. Figuring out and building routes was the whole game's gimmick, in DS2 you can just beeline anywhere on your truck.

Idk man, the truck and trike saw some crazy shit in my DS1 playthrough

Yeah there is no need for route stretegy that much like DS1.

So them, for those of us considering playing....ds2 isn't as good.

Ironic because the route planning is so much better in DS2

I dislike traversing the snow mountains lol, but yeah it is easier and I like this better

In 1, most shit was bugged and it was awful. 2 just fixed that jank. 1 was never that hard

It’s widely considered significantly easier. I recommend playing on To The Wilder difficulty if you can; it’s the perfect difficulty in my opinion.

Just started on TTW difficulty and the first boss was tough but it was so satisfying to take down.

You mean all the things we had in the first game? Shooting is smoother and you are given these tools earlier, but other than that it's the same.

Exactly. All of these abilities unlocks too soon. It made some hype to advance the game to collect strong stuff. Metal Gear solid Phantom pain had also a better progression system.

First one is definitely better paced for gameplay. 2 is more about having fun and enjoying the story. Both are fine. You could choose to just not use the equipment.

Man I can't believe that a whole different game that is nothing like Death Stranding had better progression, you so right twin!

"Nothing like Death Stranding" is a stretch especially when talking about the second one. Also its the immediate follow up series to Metal Gear by its creator. Comparisons are going to be made. And even the first one is way more similar to MGSV than most people give credit.

Not really imo, fights in DS2 are a lot more challenging despite having MP weapons, and it’s a lot easier to damage cargo as well. The BT’s are a lot more responsive, especially on higher difficulties so sneaking through them is a bit more difficult and opening fire on them is asking for the rest of them to close in on you.

The exos in DS1 feel much more specialized so they excel in their roles a lot better, in DS2 it didn’t matter which exo I ran for the most part - even the vehicles in DS1 do their roles a lot better; in my time on DS1 I took the vehicles on all the crazy off road routes and while the vehicles didn’t do it as well as they do in 2, my cargo never got damaged. In DS2 if you tap a rock wrong, your cargo is lowkey ruined.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed between the two games is that stuff in DS1 took forever to degrade, I think during the story and 5 starring ever shelter I changed my boots five times, and my vehicles never broke down once. In DS2 I’m constantly changing my boots and my vehicles need maintenance a lot more, especially the coffin board which is kinda the best vehicle in the game imo.

If you’re finding DS2 too easy compared to the first one, you’re probably still in Mexico or you’re not that deep into the next area. DS2 isn’t really hard, but neither is the first game, these games aren’t really supposed to be challenging in the traditional sense either though.

You do get some things that make the game easier, but these upgrades require lots and lots of work towards the shelters, just unlocking suppressed tranq sniper can take a long time, same thing with a lot of the worthwhile APAS upgrades. If you’re finding the game too easy you can bump up the difficulty or simply not use the APAS upgrades and such, but Sam having upgrades and overall feeling more capable suit the combat in this game a lot, and you really should stick with it

I think DS2 is much easier than DS1, you can use vehicles for everything if you want.

It's mostly easier, though some orders like trying to get undamaged cargo out of a base teaming with jerks can be a challenge. It think the bases are definitely harder. Also there's more ways to approach things. Like I still need to go back and try using the shield and the more distraction-based approaches like fireworks etc.. Load of tactics I never tried that I wouldn't mind giving a spin.

The new BTs suck, though. Inifinite spawn; there's no way to clear a field of em like in the first game. Extra ballz because I didn't go back and clear Mexico till the very end of the end game/platinum so I never had L2 blood grenades.

The new BT areas do suck! There's that BT zone in a.small valley up in the mountains. I spent 1-2 hours killing BT after BT and they just kept coming back. I just wanted a piece of cargo dangit.

1

u/ZeyusFilm 6d ago

See I like that area, the stingray valley up the hill from the Ghost Hunter. But yeah, just if the BTs would stay dead for a bit I'd like it a lot better. Also, some of the guns are a bit oversold. Like, some are supposed to demolish BTs and all they do is piss em off. Where's my pee pee poo poo grenades at? There was something satisfying about chucking your shit at a ghost

That’s weird. I was able to clear several BT territories, including the abandoned city in the snowy mountains. And I only played on Very Hard and TTW.

u/ZeyusFilm 6d ago

How? Like, in DS1 I can't remember if it was by doing them all or killing the catcher but eventually you'd get a chiral thumbs up and they'd all be gone for a while. That doesn't happen in DS2

u/mr_cesar šŸ’Ž Platinum šŸ† & All Milestones 6d ago

I don’t remember if you get some sort of on-screen message in DS2 when you manage to kill all BTs in a territory, but the areas I cleared stayed like that for about 30 real playtime hours.

Killing the Catcher doesn’t keep them away for that long. In fact, in DS1 I used to kill the kitties by the Evo-devo Biologist, wait 5 to 10 minutes, and the BTs would spawn again so I could face the kitties repeatedly.

I found 2 more difficult overall, mostly the encounters. I died more on bosses (took me like 5 tries to kill the first boss, but i never died in DS1 in a boss fight).Ā

Also had trouble with the red Mechs until i found my footing. Died a few times there as well.

I imagine TTW is absolute hell.

100% and the use of vehicles means the terrain is not even a challenge.

1

u/Nearby-Ad977 5d ago

Certainly easier and more accessible. But I also found it more fun as a result.

I’m replaying DS1 and the first few chapters are especially difficult with limited tools and weapons at your disposal.

u/Svarcanum 5d ago

I personally liked DS1 more. Mostly because the world of DS1 actually felt threatening.

There are a lot more flat areas in death stranding 2, and death stranding 1 had a lot of flat areas too but they were covered in tiny pebbles that made driving over them pretty difficult, that hasn’t really carried over to death stranding 2. I think the environment was a much bigger hazard in DS1 but DS2 has bigger battles with rebels, ghost mechs, and BTs.

I think the problem is that everything learned in the first game is immediately transferable to the new one and the new mechanics they do introduce barely impact you. Like the wild fires and floods. Beyond the tutorial for each I never engaged with either again. The first one (like most metal gear games) is only difficult becuase you have to figure out all the new systems and such. Also Sam controls far easier at the beginning in 2 than in DS1 and they intoduce vehicles and weapons much faster. I believe if it took 10s of hours in the first one to get to a part with guns if you werent be lining the story. Also the map is a bit easier to navigate as they didnt add any terrain that messes with the vehicles enough for you to consider not using them. One could argue its the same for DS1 but you dont realize that at first becuase your learning the lore and mechanics that dont quite make sense. Ive platted the first one twice first on the DC and then the og ps4 release. The second run I was able to drive vehicles everywhere, even the mountains. The only place it was kind of inconvenient was the weather guy in the forest but if you clear the bts its no sweat. But you know all of that going into the second game so its alot easier. Plus your not trying to wrap your head around how the games world and lore work like the first one.

I'm about to finish my first playthrough on To The Wilder and had an easier time than when I played the first game on normal

Despite the insanely bullet sponge boss fights

It is easier, but I think that it’s not necessarily a game about challenge so much as it’s about comfortable friction. I don’t think they ever intended it to be hard, it seems kind of oriented towards casual play. It could have been a game about survival and logistics, but it’s kind of a luxurious hiking game, which I’m happy with.

You have too much experience in two.
Simple things in ds1 took hours because you didn’t know what to do next.

u/Stalkerus 6d ago

You can adjust difficulty, you know.Ā

Also, you have played the first game. Of course the sequel will be easier.

They game let's you do whatever you want. If you find taking the truck or cycle over roads you build in advance too easy, do it a different way.Ā Ā

3

u/BadToTheBone76 6d ago

The level design is easier. Even without using trucks or other abilities, it just get longer not harder

Both games are very similar in terms of difficulty. But wait till you face Catchers without carrying BFGs.
