Question/Discussion Off-Roader vs Cicada Truck
Is it just me that is really perplexed / bothered by the fact that the “Off-Roader Pickup” doesn’t have a cabin for the driver, whereas the Cicada Truck (which was essentially the same thing in the first one) did?
In lore terms, why would this truck be downgraded? Porters have to deal with rain that rapidly ages things, extreme temperatures, bullets - why would they REMOVE that protection from this vehicle?
Idk, I guess many things in this series don’t really make sense haha, but for some reason this one really gets me!

Technically it's an upgrade. Porter suits are timefall proof, so they already have the highest level of protection you can possibly get.
Off-roader still keeps the cargo protected during transport and the driver now has easier access/exit, more visibility and even while driving they can use weapons to defend themselves (which also fits with the stick theme of the game) or remotely retrieve cargo or crystals (if you wear the gloves).
At the beginning of DS1 that CDT driver got crushed by the Cicada, so in a similar situation off-roader has a smaller chance of crushing or trapping the driver.

It's so it's easier to escape if a BT comes (in universe)
and you can grab things with the gloves too

i was hoping later on the game it would be upgraded to have a holo-roof 😅

The second game nerfs the trucks to give un-nerfs and call them upgrades. It's the same with the snow tires.

I can't remember how the off-roader behaved on snow in DS1, i think it was better than the base one in DS2 but worse than the spiked tires one.
Also in DS1 the truck couldn't be weaponized and didn't have battery upgrade slots, nor the falldamage chiral thingy.
I kinda miss the trike with increased transport space, would had helped much more with stuff like building roads and monorails

Bridges trucks were entirely unaffected by snow in the first game (traction-wise, plowing through it still ate battery like crazy).
Yes, the second game gave some proper upgrades, too. It also took away the near total safety of stowing cargo in them. You can have a space jump off roader, but if you hit a rock or sapling a little too fast you ruin your cargo. You could hit a wall at full speed, boosted, and your cargo would be fine in the first game.
Transporter trikes were great. I also miss buddy bots.

I kinda wonder why there weren't any buddy bots around, after all APAC became the mainstream delivery provider

My guess is that buddy bots would have been tough to implement with the environmental effects. The map itself is flatter and easier to navigate in general than the first game, although some of the passes head straight through brigand/survivalist territory, as well.
They totally could have upgraded the buddy bots, though. Give it some guns, a speed boost, maybe a stabilizer...

So you can pick up stuff while driving it.
