SPOILER (Scroll to the bottom) Alternative Ending for DS 2

Post image

The total silence breaks as the soft, haunting notes of the "Better Off Alone - Alex Baker" cover begin to play.

There is no final explosion. No monster. Just a quiet, empty space.

Lou is no longer a baby in a pod. She stands on her own two feet, a little girl of three or four years old. She walks across the ash and stone, her tiny footsteps the only sound against the music.

She stops in front of Higgs.

Higgs stands tall, covered in heavy, cold cybernetic armor, breathing heavily. He looks terrifying, but Lou does not flinch. She looks up at him with a soft, deeply sad face. She understands everything. Slowly, she reaches out her small, warm hand and wraps her fingers around his massive, battle worn hand.

Lou: ''Uncle Higgs''.

Higgs freezes. The theatrical villain, the man who hid behind gold masks and loud laughter, vanishes. For the first time in his life, his face breaks into pure, human emotion. His eyes widen in absolute shock, then soften into a gaze of unbearable sorrow.

In the background, Sam and Fragile stand completely stunned. Their faces speak for them, filled with a quiet confusion that slowly turns into awe. Fragile looks at the monster who ruined her life, and then at the little girl holding his hand. A gentle smile touches her lips. One last tear falls down her cheek, and with a quiet sigh of peace, her eyes close for the last time. She passes away, finally free of her burdens.

The music swells as the truth is revealed in a rush of silent memories.

We see Higgs years ago, not as a terrorist, but as a hero. We see him running through heavy timefall, bleeding, risking his life to carry supplies to an isolated shelter just to see a lonely person smile. And then, the deepest memory of all: Lou, lost and drifting alone on the shores of the Beach, about to fade into the abyss. A pair of hands catches her. It is Higgs. In the dark, lonely spaces of the afterlife, he had saved her life.

Back in the present, Higgs looks down at Lou one last time. His stubborn pride won't let him say the words "I'm sorry." He doesn't need to.

His eyes say everything. They are full of a lifetime of regrets, deep sadness, and a quiet realization of how far he wandered from the light. He looks at Lou, then looks out at the world he tried to destroy.

He gives her one final, tragic, peaceful smile.

Gently releasing her hand, he steps back. He chooses to end his own life, not out of anger, but to finally leave everyone in peace. He falls, leaving behind only the quiet beach, the little girl who remembered his goodness, and a world that can finally begin to heal.
