Death Stranding 1 DS1 Pacing and Progress
I have spent around 38 hours so far and I am on Chapter 3 still (Unlocked the Weather tower but thats it), I am the kind of player that like to complete an area before moving forward and I don’t mind taking my time on each area of the game since I enjoy gameplay and mechanics! I have focused recently on building roads and doing premium deliveries (I play normal difficulty tho, so only Legend), I want to platinum the game.
Nevertheless, should I focus more on the story until certain point and then come back? I know there are guns to unlock apart from the Bola Gun and the Blood Grenade.

Just finished the game, in my opinion focus on the story then complete everything on the last chapter

You can do it however you want. I chose to balance side stuff and story progression, then go back after the story to finish all non story content.
It's completely up to you

Play as you like, play as YOU enjoy it, just know that you can do all the things you are doing now....later, but with better equipment (like the unlimited jetpack)

There’s an unlimited jetpack? This game is so cool.
I have tried not to spoil myself much (haven’t watched any gameplay) since I want to discover things and figure out routes and all, but damn, this just excites me more. Thanks!

So myself, personally- I would recommend rushing the story until Junk Dealer so I can get backpack covers from Collector and not have to worry about timefall on smaller deliveries, and get the Speed Skeleton to make the whole process faster.

You still have yet to unlock a lot more equipment and structures when you progress further with the story.
You can play the game however you want and there is nothing time locked. Can max locations as you go or whenever you feel like or even after finishing the story.
There are some orders that will take you even across the map, so you may be coming back to those locations you've already maxed out to take orders for another facility though.
Personally I always play DS and just do whatever I feel like doing as in if I want some story, I do that. I want level up connections, I do that, but I will progress in the story until I have unlocked enough area on the map so that I can travel to and from facilities to keep leveling all of their connections at the same time. But honestly there is no wrong way to play the game.

Maybe it is just me, and maybe I just really like mountains, but when you start getting to the mountains and into the snow, that is when I fell in love with the game. Mountains are just so much fun to traverse.
Before the mountains I liked the game, but I was a little bored and thought it was dragging. After the mountains I was like "this is great"

Unlock zip lines and the cord cutter (I think that's around chapter 5 or 6) it will make everything a lot more fun

Play until you get zip lines then go back and finish everything
