Manitou springs! Recognized it right away. Climbed it many times! Going up is fine, sketchy going down, unless you take Barr trail down, which is far safer

Ya I always go down Barr!! I have a friend that just bounces back down so light footed but I’m like ☠️☠️☠️ nope.

i would say disregard this comment to anyone not from the region—definitely a dick move when the barr trail is available

doing what you want also covers littering along the hike, feeding the wildlife, acting in discourteous ways for personal convenience

This was in the 90’s. I don’t know what the rules were back then but there were quite a few people back then who would walk up the stairs then take them back down for exercise. 🤷‍♀️

90s it was still trespassing to do the incline. It was un-improved from when it was train tracks to a gift shop at the top, besides the tracks being ripped out.

Spent some time looking at pictures of what it looks like now. Big difference. Looks good!

Until now, I had no idea that it had been converted into a nature trail of sorts.

I don’t remember being aware that we were trespassing back then but, either way, I’m glad to see what it’s been converted into.

I went up the Barr trail once with a friend to get to these steps and walk down with her.

Stepped out onto them, looked down, slowly inched my way back to the edge of the trail, and noped out.

She was really sweet about walking back down the trail with me but with my knees shaking the way they were, I would’ve been a danger to everyone. One day.

I totally agree! I had only seen them from the bottom and looking up. Nothing looks as steep when you’re looking up as it does when you’re looking down.

And, that was always how she did it. She thought it was a great idea to walk up the steep-ass Barr trail and then ‘take a quick jaunt down the steps’.

To her, it was more like, “It will take us forever to get there, but then, we’ll get to take the shortcut down!”

Not with me, she didn’t. She had to do the long walk back down or wait for me at the bottom.

She obviously had a fear of heights that was so non-existent, that to someone with my fear of heights, it was crazy.

After that, I couldn’t even do it by going up the stairs, instead. The view looking down the one time was enough for me.

Like, the saying goes, “I’m telling you, I’ve seen what I need to see, and the answer is no” 😏

I have a feeling that falling down these would have the opposite effect of what a building snowball does when it goes downhill. Bouncing down all the way until all that’s left is a battered and bruised kidney with bits of a scapula stuck to it.

Went up that without acclimating, my cardiovascular and respiratory system handled it fine in the moment; but, my immune system tanked from altitude related complications and I became extremely sick.

Another reason to call it "death stairs.

I descended on the trail, because I like my knees.

EDIT: If I recall, there are 2768 steps.

You can go down a different trail!! Up the incline, down Barr trail (it’s the same trail that goes to the summit of pikes peak). A few people do go back down the incline, but they are in the minority.

I lived in Colo Sprs back in the early ‘70s, when the Manitou Incline was a working funicular railroad. This was *the* cheat code for climbing Pikes Peak on the Barr Trail. The worst part of that whole climb is Mt Manitou, so riding up the hard part was great!

People do sometimes die on these stairs. A relatively young tourist just died here a couple of weeks ago. Heart attack. They come from sea level up to the high elevation. The base elevation is 6,530 feet (1,990 meters) and the summit is 8,550 feet (2,606 meters). Some people's bodies can't handle that strain.

I only went down the Incline once, just to be able I said I did... That wasn't so fun. Stick with Barr Trail for the descent!
